Worn Gearbox

Recommended Posts

I have a worn gearbox in a s14 silvia. I know it needs replacing but for now I don't have the funds to put towards a rebuild.

The gears are so worn they sound like they are straight cut. It's loud enough to easily hear from a distance if I was to drive past. Synco are fine though.

Currently I am using 75w90w oil I think. Any chance a heavier oil could reduce the volume of the noise?

Most people swap the oil out for some Redline Shockproof, but if your gearbox is as far gone as you lead me to believe it is then it will more than likely do nothing. I had a worn 5th synchro and the gate to 3rd was slowly deteriorating in my old gearbox, swapped oil out for some shockproof and i couldn't tell the difference between the 2 oils.. Other than that i doubt anything will fix your problem. Time for a new box if the oil doesn't do anything :/
