Ls2 Coil On Plug Mod

Recommended Posts

I tried but wouldnt work with neo head. Perhaps my coils were slightly different. Ended up mounting then on the exhaust cam cover using the gm leads.

You have to set your dwell correctly or it will misfire.

RB26.

Honestly the hardest part was working out how to make the brackets. If I had a tig I would weld some rod from the sides of the valley and tap a thread into them, and secure the coil packs with a bolt.

There's really not much to it.

Use the boots and contact springs from stock coilpacks (i think i had to stretch the springs slightly), sit the coilpacks where they are happy and have good contact with the plugs, then make brackets to hold them in place.

From my build thread:

Had a couple of hours today to dick around with the coilpacks..

Grabbed some old boots of some stock RB coilpacks and found they fit nicely over my LS2 truck coilpacks I have. Standard these are a 'Coil Near Plug' which means they are designed to have a small lead from pack to plug. With the contact spring pulled from the RB coilpacks, stretched slightly, they fit perfectly over the electrode in the LS2 coil so I can run these on the plugs. The contact spring compresses about 5mm once the coilpack is in place on top of the plug. Should work OK. I wrapped some electrical tape around them just to keep them in place and give it a bit of strength.

And some brackets I made up which will hold them all firmly in place, just need to pick up some more nuts and bolts.

Cost. They are heaps cheaper.

Somewhat performance. They are substantially more powerful coils. But guys make big power with stock coils so that's not the main reason.

The dwell needs to be set higher (5ms) or else they won't perform as well as stock coils.

Aren't you in the states? They would be cheap as over there.

Here we can buy 8 new coils for 280 aussie dollars.

I have them in my neo, using stock ls leads they are mounted on the exhaust cam cover.

Yes I am in the states. I figured that it would have been a cost thing. But compared to the stock GTR coils what your saying is they are a way better coil performance wise and obviously cost wise. Im running a power fc in all my cars so I should be able to set the dwell settings. Im going to need coils for one of my build. I willing to give this a try. I also ahave a tig welder. So making the bracket to hold them down would be easy.
