Jordy's R32

Hello!

I've been lurking for a while and thought i'd share with you my project!

This is my 1990 Nissan R32 Skyline GTS

While non turbo (p-plates) it's a lot of fun, and i get my fare share of track time in it at wakefield

The car is slightly modified, including;

- R33 RB25DE Engine (VCT)

- R32 Turbo Brakes w/ braided lines all round - DBA T2 Slotted Rotors all round and Ferodo DS2000 Pads

- R32 Viscous LSD

- HSD Coilovers

- HICAS locked

- Enkei RPF 01 Wheels (17x9+22 [Khumo KU31 - 235-45-R17])

- GTR Front bar, Front lip, bonnet, bonnet lip, front grille, wing and headlights all genuine items

- Bride Brix 1.5, Nardi deep corn and a nismo aluminium shift knob
- And a few other things i've probably forgotten

Over the past few months i have been preparing a turbo engine for the car, i've gone with the RB25DET from the R33 which is currently getting a refresher in preparation for the swap

Thanks for the overwhelming support already, I honestly thought being an NA skyline I'd be shunned a little to be honest! :w00t: - Anyway, you asked for some pics!

I went to Wakefield yesterday (09/09/2014) - Was a great day, and while the 2 friends who came with me both had turbo's I wasn't too far behind in terms of time! :yes:

As I mentioned, I have an RB25 getting a rebuild with the following;

ACL Race Bearings

OEM piston Rings

Tomei 256 poncams

Tomei Cam Gear to replace some china brand ssprocket
Full engine gasket kit
Timing belt and water pump kit

Head rebuilt

Hey mate, 32 looks awesome! Very impressive. My first 32 was an NA and I love it to bits. Ended up giving it to my dad when I moved onto a 32 gtr before going back to a 32 gtst. His only has very basic mods and is still running the little rb20de but with close to 230,000km on it now it loves being thrashed round Wakefield!

What lap times are you getting out of it?

Hopefully we bump into you at wakie when we've got both our 32's there.

Hey mate, thanks for the kind words :)

Best is a 1:19.7 - Would've been nice to have some nicer tires though, the rear end was very slippery, i think i was on the tread limiters at that point.. (oops)

That sounds mad! Always been a fan of the GT-R, might have to upgrade later on haha

I know the way, 220k's on this one and she still loves a good few laps, and they aren't calm laps either :woot:

The engine has been completed! - I know you all love pics, so here goes

So we pulled the head off, and pulled the crank, rods, and pistons out to find a smashed ring land and a huge score in Cylinder 1, great.

As it's my first turbo car, i didn't really want to go down the route of a forged engine, so i went to a wrecker and bought a RB25 block in better condition than mine.. bit annoying when you buy a motor and it's blown up.. oh well. I did however get all of the the accessories, pumps, spare loom, and a good condition head which i rebuilt anyway

Having had enough of the chong radiator with a ridiculous attempt at a thermo setup, i went to work today and replaced with all with a KOYO oem replacement radiator, a clutch fan, and shroud. COOL! - Pun intended!

While i was there, i replaced the upper and lower radiator bushes with brand new ones, even though they make literally no difference, they do look better

For the future ill look at getting a nice big GReddy alloy rad and an oil cooler, but not for a while, my driving doesn't warrant it at the moment, not until im well into the turbo phase anyway :)

I'll save you looking at the end result, it looks stock and that's not that exciting...

Just been working on the new engine recently, parents are heading away for a week in the new year so hoping to steal the carport and drop the new engine in then, hopefully everything lines up and it's possible

Here's some pics of what i've been up to

Today i got around to installing my "RB25 Heater Hose kit" - Notice the quotation marks.. After modifying a few hoses with a large knife and replacing all of the hose clamps for peace of mind, we were in business. I also cleaned the intake side valves, and replaced my thermostat and housing.

- Pretty much done, all i need to do is mock up 1 line from the oil cooler as the "kit" doesn't have one that fits, bit of a shame

After working on the heater hoses for about an hour, i was going to mount up my Greddy plenum, but before that i decided to clean out the IACV and Cold Start Valve as these are notorious for playing up, and generally quite difficult to get to while the engine is in

IACV / AAC - Idle Air / Accessory Air Control Valve

There is tons of information online about cleaning this valve out, the easiest way is to simply unbolt it from your plenum, and blasting the buildup of oil and gunk out of it with carby cleaner. Nissan do make a replacement gasket, which can be found for sale on Kudos. Part number: 23785-57Y00

- Here is the valve, commonly filled with oily gunk after years of use. I gave mine a wipe on the outside too

- The previous owner of this valve musn't have known that nissan acually make a gasket for this part and decided to use about half a tube of gasket maker on it which made cleaning the insides of it and the gasket surface to my standards a 30 minute job, hopefully i'll never need to touch that again

Cold Start Valve

Found under the plenum in a very inaccessible location is the cold start valve and after 20 years of engine use it also tends to be full of oil and gunk and it is suggested you clean it out, again with carby cleaner

- Here is the valve in question, it is located on the under side of your plenum and comes apart with 4 screws.

- I didn't take a before photo, but after spraying the crap out the valve it turned up nice and clean. Remember to make sure the mating surface is clean and replace the gasket.

Thermostat Housing

Available for purchase from kudos, i personally like to replace the thermostat housings as they tend to get brittle after years and years of use

When reinstalling, be sure that the thermostat is pointed in the right direction with the "UP ^" on the thermostat facing 12 o'clock. The housing can be bolted to the block and the 3 bolts torqued to 17-21 foot pounds

Now that the intake side is complete, it's time to move onto the exhaust side, where i'll cover manifold and turbo instillation as well as required lines and fittings to make everything work

Not selling n/a car to p plater and buying turbo. Building own turbo car.. like a baaws!

Might do the same to my gts r33. Respect :yes:

I think it helps my car was originally turbo, so i have the brakes and diff already, it's just got an NA motor in it at the moment lol

In saying that, people have told me over and over to just buy a turbo car, but i like my car too much to just sell it, and i'd end up paying through the roof for genuine GTR bits all over again.. no thanks

this makes a big difference.
good clean looking car. i wish i had the knowledge time money and patience to build up a nice turbo car for my full licence back in the day.

Yeah i understand that, a lot of my friends say the exact same thing but i like taking things slow and doing them right :)

It's not all that bad to be honest, the engine is on a stand, i have most of the parts ill need to get it running all sitting there ready to go and my car is still running so I'm not really missing out on much, i get the bus and/or walk to work every day so i don't need a car for anything but enjoyment

It is quite true though, much easier to sell up and buy a turbo car, you save time, money and your sanity :whistling:

But sorry, im not getting rid of this any time soon :wub::wub:
