New Garrett Turbos In The Pipe ?

As has been mentioned there are supposed to be a few new offerings on the way from Garrett .

The GTX2971R sounds interesting but the few details available only say the turbine is smaller than GT30 and larger than GT28 . Someone mentioned this turbine being smaller but slightly higher flowing than the GT30 so if its true then it must have less hub and more blade area .

Also there is vague info about a couple of GTW , W for wide I think turbos is plain and ball bearing but there numbers must be using a different system to the usual turbine size plus compressor OD ie GT30 76mm R .

The pics show 9 bladed billet compressors in either T04E or what looks like port shrouded T04S compressor housings .

The turbine housings look like being V Band outlet and inlet in some cases and in a few closer spaced AR ratios .

If people find our more can they post here for all to see .

Sorry to thread jump but i was hoping you could help me out a bit with T04B compressor housing A/Rs.

According to the Garrett site compressor housing A/R has not much affect, not like the hot end of course.

i have some gtx2860r chra's with -5 (0.64A/R) hot ends but need the T04B cold end.

was thinking of using some old GTss housings and re-profiling them to suit the 45.7mm/60mm gtx compressor as the GTss inducer is only 44.46mm and there should be enough meat left to profile it. just wondering on the 0.42 A/R and the outcome on boost rate and ceiling.

Also i have some old gt2510 T04B covers which would have to be sleeved, tig'd either end and profiled as the inducer is 47.7mm / Ex 60.1mm but the housing is 0.60 A/R.

The gtss option is simple but gt2510 a bit more work but can easily be done.

I always read your threads and posts as you really seem to know what you are talking about.

Appreciate your time and thoughts on this.

Sorry Discopotato03 you must have misunderstood me.

Put simply 2 identical turbos, the only difference the compressor housings (T04B type) one 0.6AR the other 0.42AR .

Just wondering about pressure rise rate, heat and capacity.

Found a lot of good unbiased info on the Turbo Forums, good site. the following one about my particular question.

Think i will stick with 0.6 AR and if there is surge (doubtful) then i will re-machine the profiles on my lathe with some 0.42 SS hsgs.

A few details are now creeping out .

The GTX2971R looks like having the larger or 90 trim version of the cropped GT30 turbine which we know is a flop in GT28 turbine housings . Garrett has been said to have cast new turbine housings that better suit this and the normal 60mm 84T GT30 turbine and I think they are the new V band and twin scroll T3 flanged ones .

Also there is info on the new GTW BB and bush bearing GTW units at ATP Turbos site .

The $64 question is will they still do T3 flanged IW turbine housings because that's what suits most modest roadies . I couldn't give a rats about V band mounts etc , if it ain't got a workable IW option shove it where the sun doesn't shine .

BW doesn't limit their units to external gates .

The smallest GTW unit could be interesting particularly if it gets the usual GT30 turbine somewhere down the track . From memory it has a 9 bladed 76mm compressor in a modest trim size .

I found a GTX parts list and these details were included .

GTX2967R with 56.6mm 84T turbine

GTX2971R with 56.6mm 84T turbine

GTX2971R with 56.6mm 90T turbine

GTX2976R with 56.6mm 90T turbine .

If you had a HKS GT2835 Pro turbine housing the first two could probably bolt to an RB exhaust manifold .

Maybe, but you'll have stuff all chance of finding a Pro S housing these days I would have thought, and then the issue with the unique dump flange.

Kando sells a housing for the cropped turbine. Might be a better option with external gate off housing.

Seems to be very limited options for internal gate these days (except Hypergear options).

^^ This then poses the question of why not have Stao supply a complete turbocharger spec that has been trialled and proven?

I have no preference/suggestion one way or the other, but reckon for a Garrett devotee an external gate setup on Mark's unit would have been a half decent option even if it no longer resembles a stocker.

Looking closer all that's of any interest in the GTW turbos is the smallest one with the 76mm 58T 9 bladed compressor in the T04E compressor housing . If it found its way onto a GT30 turbine in the GT25 sized BB cartridge (GT2554R-GT3582R family) it may have its uses .

I think the GT29xxR series is a case of why bother without an IW turbine housing .

Agreed. On the add on ATP site it says: "The GTX29R series adds more high flowing internally gated configurations"

Might be interesting to see.

I think Garrett turbos are dead this is their attempt to shut PTE out of the market with cheaper turbos. Only gotta look at their sizing to realize who they are having a crack at!

Kinda sad that a company like Garrett are now literally giving up and attempting to undercut PTE & BW becoming "the poor mans turbo" so to speak :(

Lift ya game garrett and do some f**king homework instead of delivering these "budget turbos"

Thing is with these housing options it still requires other bits to bolt on which still doesn't make them a "cheap" alternative really ;)

Yep, I learnt that lesson the hard way with the GTX3067. After having the dump remade to fit the different turbine housing didn't achieve results any better (arguably worse) than bolt on offerings from Hypergear.

I tell myself I have something a little different at least :)

    • Yep sure does . Comes on primes and cuts off as a factory pump would 
    • And I hope the relay receives the trigger signal from the ECU and not the ignition power. It should prime and stop if the motor isn't running.
    • I disconnected before the fuel pump and restriction still there. Disconnected at turbosmart fpr and also after ethanol sensor and pressure dropped. No kinks in line but I found one spot above diff that I can hear the fuel flowing while running so I'm wondering if there is built up corrosion  from 10 years of sitting.  I had injectors cleaned and tested and one was dead but rest were fine. Was never an issue when I owned the car previously but I'll talk to jez about his thoughts on if they should be changed to newer tech. Thx guys at least I know the setup should work again. Pump is wired directly to relay and not using factory plug any  more

    • Hi and best of luck with your car. Its a bit hard to tell how low the car is all round from that pic or if its been lowered or not. 90mm is a bit low on the front apron but it depends on the shocks & springs condition & whether or not its been lowered. Going to 19” wheels will give you 15-20mm depending on rubber but you might need new shocks. Mine -2005 are weeping fluid slightly but have lasted 19years!!. So if yours are original they need replacing anyway if they havent been touched before.
