Oil Pressure And Water Temp Gauge Install Help?

Hi all,

I've got a few new (electronic) gauges coming in the next few weeks and would like some info/help on installing them. I have a r34 GTT.

I've tried searching on the forum, but a little confused, so if someone can clarify please?

1. Oil pressure gauge - I've read i need to put a sandwich plate between the block and the oil filter. What do i need to connect from the sandwich plate to the gauge? Where can i get a decently priced sandwich plate for this job, and do I need to block off all but 1 port?

2. Water temp gauge - So i've read i need to stick a sensor in the radiator tube or on the radiator or something? How do i go about doing this? I don't see drilling into the radiator or hose is the right thing to do... is it?

The oil pressure gauge, im assuming they run the stock sensor off the oil cooler (stock) plate like the r33. If so there is a plug in the intake side just behind the cooler/filter plate that you can use.

The water temp sensor, AFAIK people usually just buy the little adapter that goes in the middle of the top radiator hose. I dont like them but it will work fine. Search on the Just Jap website for water temp sensor adapter or something. They should sell them just to give you an idea of what your looking for

Not really sure what the stock oil cooler looks like. Do you have a pic of it? Also, would this mean i won't need a sandwich plate?

How does it work? Kind of like a t-piece with radiator hose on either side, and the temp sensor fitting in the small hole in the middle of the adaptor?

Yes on the water temp sensor

The oil cooler is what the filter screws onto. Plug behind this is what your after - 1/8 plug. Most sensors are 1/8npt

Because it says HPI and has a thermostat.

Why not just get a t fitting and run the oil sensor off that? Or 90 degree or what ever works? Surely will be cheaper and still work as designed

As already discuss. You just need the little extender for the side of the block then your gauge sensor will screw in. Easy.

I ran a fitting and braidedline to a couple of fittings in order to run 2 sensors but OP doesnt need that

Is the stock plug easy to find behind the stock cooler/filter? Also, do i need to drain engine oil before i install any extender onto it for the sensor?

Haven't had a look to see where this plug is yet so not really sure what to look for.

Should be fine oil wise. I took the plug out when the engine was out of the car

where can i get this extender for the oil plug behind the filter? so im not cluelessly walking into bunnings or wherever.

ALSO, does anyone know the diameter i need for the water temp adaptor? Not sure what the radiator hose size is, and only way to find out is if i take it off...which i would rather not do cos i wont have a car to drive to the shops to buy one with lol.

Its a 1/8 npt or bspt extension. Cant remember if its bspt or npt sorry but get one of each if all else fails. Will only be cheap

ok cool, i've heard it's NPT but i'll get both just in case. Standard part to get at bunnings?

im changing my oil anyway today, so i'll do it then. Is there a cap i need to take off the valve before putting the extender on? will oil start gushing out? lol

Don't go to Bunnings. Go to Blackwoods or Pirtek or any of the millions and bajillions of hydraulic and pneumatic parts suppliers in the phone book.

So i went under to have a look at where this plug is.. but not sure what I'm looking for.

Here's a photo of the filter, oil cooler behind it, and a small attachment om it which has some sort of plug covered in a rubber boot thing.

Where do I put my sender? Or am I looking wrong...?

The plug is in the block. It will be a bitch to do with the engine in the car and everything attatched to it but not impossible
