Paying It Forward: R32 Edition

Hello ladies and gentlemen. If you own an R32 here in the US you probably already know that it's not exactly the easiest car to own and maintain largely because of a lack of widespread resources and info here in the land of apple pie and easy gun ownership. I know from my own experience that I would have had a much harder time getting my R32 GT-R registered if it hadn't been for the assistance of some wonderfully helpful JDM car owners here in my state of Arizona. Since then I've started my blog 23gt.blogspot.com to help spread info about JDM car ownership in the US to prospective and current owners but I can't possibly answer every question of course.

So, here's what I'd like to do – if you own an R32 or other JDM imported car in the US I'd like you to contact me if you'd be willing to help others out if they have questions about their own cars that they are importing or have already imported. Since registration and ownership situations can vary greatly from state to state I'd like to compile a list of owners who can help someone out if they have trouble, preferably someone who lives in the same state or at least in the same part of the country.

There would be two situations you would probably be called on to help:

  1. Someone has a car on the way or already here but needs help getting it registered.

  2. Someone needs help finding a good shop locally to get their car inspected or fixed.

I may contact you to help with other issues but only if it's appropriate.

Email would be the preferred contact method but if you have an alternate way you'd like to give (such as PM on a forum) that'd be great too. What would basically happen would be if someone contacts me through my blog or a forum I go to, or if I see a forum post asking for help you would then get an email from me asking if I can share your contact info with that person and extend an offer to help them out. I'd just like you to share your knowledge, I don't expect you to do anything financial or anything like that and won't hold you to a standard – just the fact you're willing to help another person out is enough.

So what'll happen would be something like this (this is just an example mind you): I see someone on SkylineOwnersAnonymousAndOnlineDating.Com who posts “Hi! My name is Stacy and I'm an ex-porn star and I just imported an R32 Skyline but the DMV won't let me register it even after I flashed the clerk! Helps me plz!”

You'd then get an email from me saying “Hey, have you seen this girl Stacy with the R32? She's hot! Here's some links to her vids! Oh., and you wanna give her advice on getting her car registered?”

Only after you give me the okay would I then share your contact info, discreetly by the way so you don't get more emails from Nigerian princes and male enhancement vendors (I won't just post your email publicly – I'll either post mine and ask them to contact me or send a PM).

So if you'd like to participate in this charitable endeavor and help the Stacys of our country then please contact me by PM, email me at 23gtblog(at)gmail.com, or post in this thread how I can contact you. Here in Arizona, I have someone already on board besides me but more people would be appreciated of course. I know SAU doesn't have a lot of activity from US owners right now but I hope I can get some interest from here as well.

Thank you very much,

Oliver

P.S. Please participate only if you have a 100% legally imported JDM car. This isn't because I have anything against quasi-legal cars but it's for your safety and the other person's. If your car isn't quite legal then you probably shouldn't advertise it by sharing your contact info with others. At the same time it's not good if prospective owners get advice that's not quite on the up-and-up. Thanks.

Genius post, I'm located on the east coast of the united states and currently trying to source an R32 GTR. I've bookmarked your blog in preparation for what to expect!!!

I hope you find the blog helpful then in your search and subsequent ownership! :)

I recently have purchased a skyline. I live in New York.

I bought my car from a dealer in Richmond, VA.

www.Japaneseclassicsllc.com

Since I got my car from this dealer I did not have to do any importing or all that jazz. I simply went emailed them to get the car, called to make an appointment for a test drive, and went down to seal the deal. This was in no way different then buying any other car.

The guys I got my car from are a fantastic group of people. I have nothing but good things to say about them. The process was simple and stress free. It was a pleasure to do business with them. They even work with a financing company!

If anyone wants other info just pm me.

Patrick Harris

In Lafayette Louisiana.

My brother owns a shop in Scott Louisiana about 3 minutes off of I-10. I'm SURE he or I could help fix your skyline after doing mine!

His shop is Harris Automotive Services, Scott, LA.

I'm Dan and I have a 92 GTSt Type M from Connecticut. Mechanic by trade and spent a lot of years in the performance world. Still learning about these cars but I'm always happy to jump on and help if someone needs the assistance!

My car for reference! In the process of doing a "Type MR" conversion which was an extremely limited run of GTSt made by the Kanagawa Dealer for the 35th Anniversary of the Skyline. It was essentially a standard GTSt with a GTR grille, hood and rear wing with a special badge on the trunk but otherwise unmodified. Apparently it was limited to 200 cars.

Ever had an issue with the car not wanting to HOT start? After some driving turn car off, go into store come back and start it and have to hold the throttle down for few seconds to keep it running.

Actually I had a similar problem. Itd cold start fine but then hot start like crap.

Is your car running very rich? Do you smell excess fuel when it does start?

My issue ended up being the fuel pressure damper at the front of the rail (read: against the firewall. RB rails feed from the firewall and exit through the front and the fuel pressure regulator). The diaphragm had failed and fuel was being forced through the vacuum lines and into the intake before the throttlebody.

Pull this line off and see if there's an fuel in it.

Check hose after engine is hot or cold?

Eitherway, you should either have a small puddle or you'll smell fuel residue

Mine youd have to crank the engine and put the peddle to the floor to "catch" the engine or it would die and you have to crank it for an extended period (15 seconds or so)

    • I can believe it if you're getting air into the pickup. Cavitation is tremendously destructive for pumps.
    • I think the pic in the first post is another car, and post 7 is OP's car with standard arms and swaybar swaybar swaybar. I can't tell what brand the silver coilovers are, and even if I could I don't know whether the spring rate is OK, if you can find a brand on the shocks and numbers on the springs that might help. Also, if you can measure the ride height from centre of your wheel to the guard that will help with advice too as handling suffers if ride height is too low
    • sadly, pics no work. that car must have spent a lot of time in a cryo bubble
    • In the first photo you posted, the colour of the control arms are the signature colour for Ikeya. Same for the swaybar, signature colour for Whiteline.  I like Hardrace, they also do hardened rubber bushes if your car is mainly a street car.  I like GKTech as well, but they use a lot of rose joints in their stuff so might not be the best choice for everyone.  The system might have been good back in its day, but it's a prehistoric system now. I suspect that most people have removed the HICAS as they want the car to do what they want to do, not what the car wants to do. From what I also understand, it isn't consistent in it's behaviour on track so it's hard to trust the car/know where its absolute limits are for track use.  Having said that, I think the HICAS eliminator kit was the first thing I installed when I bought my car. I don't personally have any experience with the HICAS system on a race track.
    • Thanks for the info. Didn’t know I had aftermarket control arms already? Will talk to my garage. What brand would u recommend if I want to play around with my camber more? I would think my camber is around stock level right now or more negative now due to lowering with coilovers. I will be lower her again 1.5 cm to get some more.    also why does everyone like to remove the hicas system? Is it because most don’t work properly anymore or ppl just don’t like them. Mine is functioning as it should be right now.    thanks for the good info
