Feel free to comment.

I know that this thread might be of better use in winter, but I decided to devote half of the format into prevention - not just cure.

The following is just commonsense

Prevention

* Wash hands after shaking hands (- only 30% of USA men wash their hands after going to the bathroom)

* Wash hands after holding public railings (- escalators too)

* Clean hands in public toilets by using toilet paper rather than using taps

* Use a clean towel to wipe eyes whilst at the gym (virus can enter through eyes). Assume gym equipment to be dirty > wash

* Press pedestrian buttons at the lights with a key (- girls use elbows)

* Exhale if someone around you in a confined space (like train or bus) is sneezing or coughing

Cure

(and speed is essential here)

* Shower with the water as hot as possible on the back of your neck for a few seconds before finishing

* See if you can run it off

* If your finger nails have white flecks or you have cracked lips, get a zinc supplement quick

* See an acupuncturist

* Vitamin C up to 5000mg per day in divided doses

* Echinacea and Garlic tablets

Remember, a Cold or Flu can bring the fittest man down within two days.

Anyone here doing the 5-2 diet?

I'm not one for dieting or fads, but gave it a crack last year and dropped about 10kgs in a couple of months. Stopped last October and crept back up about 6kgs between then and June this year. Back on it now and 4kgs have been shed.

For those who aren't across it, the 5-2 is where you fast two days a week. Any two days are fine within a seven day period. It takes a bit of willpower but I find once I'm committed I find it easy.

The rule is you're allowed 600 calories (500 for chicks) for the whole day. The other five days you're allowed to eat whatever you would normally eat.

I find it kind of cool. At about 2pm I go through hyper mode and I can feel my core temp go right up and I start talking at a million miles an hour and can't sit down. I tend to just not eat on my fasting days (which are usually Mondays and Thursdays).

There's a bit of science behind it. Michael Mosley, the guy who came up with the concept, did so after looking for a way to improve his health and lost weight. He came to 5-2 after trying all sorts of things including four straight days of fasting!

Anyone else doing or done the 5-2? Results?

Hello Gents,

I thought I would start a discussion on shaving. A subject that is rarely spoken about yet we all do it.

Ever since the first little whisker emerged on my chin I have always shaved with multi blade cartridge shavers. However cartridge shavers seem to pull on my stubble before cutting which was quite irritating and just thought is was part and parcel of shaving.

One day I was trolling YouTube and came across a video which has changed my shaving experience. The video was about the pros and cons of the other forms of shaving:

Cartridge

Safety or DE shaving

Shavette

Straight razor

I now use a Safety shaver and have not looked back Not only is it a nicer shaving experience with less pulling and irritation it also works out cheaper which is a nice bonus.

So Gents what works for you? What products do you use/recommend?

This thread is purely for the pursuit of strength in the big 3 lifts, squat, bench press and deadlift.

Its not about dieting or looking good, its about lifting more weight CORRECTLY than the guy next to you

I know the Presidents of all 3 Feds in Australia, and the State delegates, so if you want to start lifting and youre not from Vic, I can help.

I'll let you guys know I am the President of GPC in Australia, but I have also been the State delegate for CAPO, the other Fed is PA. I have close friends in all 3.

GPC has the most states under its umbrella, with only Tassie not included

As far as PL clubs and Gyms, I can steer you guys in the right direction, let me know where you live and I'll tell you the closest strength gym. If your simply looking for a health spa, just Google it as I'm not familiar with them at all.

If you want to lift in a comp, be it novice or National level, with everything in between, just ask.

If you want to bench only, there are comps that cater for you

Questions on rules, equipment, attire, where to buy, I know the distributors.

While I own and run a specific PL forum, I understand the attraction of spending "time" with others that have similar interests, thats why I'm here

Ask anything, fire away, I'll try and assist

My wife and I were given fitbit's as a gift. I instantly thought what a useless, crappy gadget these things are, but after a solid two weeks of daily use I'm now used to it. I'm still not exactly sure what the actual benefit of these things are. The biggest advantage I've become I aware of is that I have something attached to me like a prison bracelet that remembers everything I do and tells me how shit I am at the end of the week, so I have a mental reminder to get active and not eat bad food.

Obviously, all of the data retrieved is taken with a grain of salt and I consider it 'indication only', however the device has me led me to understand that I sleep terribly and don't exercise for long enough periods at a time.

Does anyone else use one? And what sort of advantages or disadvantages have you encountered?

My partner has been having increasingly bad reactions to various allergens year after year. Primarily, the main offenders are plant based.

We had an allergy test conducted and she's allergic to most native grasses so of course hay fever season knocks her for 6. Over the counter hay fever medications have zero effect, trying to come into hay fever season with a healthy immune system has had no affect in the past and was not possibly this year due to having a toddler. We also eat local honey, not just because it's great but because it was suggested consuming the local produce would help, it hasn't.

Her main symptom is an extremely blocked nose/sinuses so much so that she cannot sleep, as her mouth/tongue dries out, and in turn the lack of sleep depletes her immune system and she'll catch everything under the sun.

She has had minimal success with a nasal spray, I can't remember which specific pray but the advice from the Doctor was to use it sparingly, we've found the effectiveness is already waning.

We're going to look for some specialists in Melbourne who might be able to assist so anyone who has had success please feel free to chime in, whether that's from an allergen specialist or through another means. Let me hear it.

I will reiterate, we have tried every available HayFever medication a pharmacists can supply, trying all of the differing active ingredients without ANY success.

Thought I'd make a thread where we can discuss our injuries in depth and offer non-professional advice for rehabilitation/prevention; keep track of exercise-affecting ailments etc.

I'll put a little disclaimer here that, any advice given in this thread (and the H&W section as a whole) should always be taken with a grain of salt and exists merely to provoke thought/possibilities. Most of us are not health professionals (though we all like to offer advice) and there is no substitute for consulting a health professional in real life who can physically test/scan for and recommend an appropriate course of action for the management of injuries.

We have a heavy focus on weightlifting here in this section; many of us able to relate to exercise specific injuries and rehabilitation methods, which means we can at least lead people in the right direction...whether it be recommending athlete-specific professionals or offering support to each other during tough times.
