No. Whining is either a gear mesh problem or a bearing problem (depending on the the nature of the whine. One man's whine is another man's some-other-noise).

I figured it would have to come off again but I was trying to lie to myself about it. I'll contact the shop and drop it off before the weekend. Possibly through their front window.

    Fun fun...

  2. Gear pattern, pinion depth, etc. was set. Gear had the usual yellow gear marking compound. Everything is new in the diff. I put oil in it prior to reinstall.

I'm just wondering as you break in a new ring and pinion set, if the whining is normal. I've had new LSD's before but never an aftermarket ring and pinion and I don't know what to expect. I'm waiting on a response from speedtek as well.

  3. I installed my rebuilt diff earlier today. Nismo GT 1.5 LSD and Speedtek Billet 3.3 Ring & Pinion. It whines rather bad on acceleration and is much worst above 60kmh. No noise when my foot is off the pedal.

So far, I've driven it 30 minutes with a few hours cooldown in between. Will it get better as it breaks in? or are we looking at pulling the diff and bringing it back to the assembler for verification? I waited over 3 months to get my diff back, I'm not too thrilled about having to bring it back.

    Woohoo, 3rd gear skids

Haha fun times ahead! I got around to installing it this morning. I've driven it twice now for roughly 30 minutes and letting it cool a few hours in-between. The diff is whining rather loud on acceleration, no noise on decel. It gets substantially worst past 60kmh.

I contacted Speedtek to see if the noise is possibly normal during break in as I've only ever ran OEM ring and pinion sets. I'm not to hopeful though. I'm presuming pinion depth issues, but I hope I'm wrong. I'll be pissed if It has to come off again...

  5. Well it's a Christmas miracle! I finally got my differential back, 16 weeks later.... I chronicled it in another thread but long story short, first shop took it apart and it took them 2.5 months to finally inform me they have no idea wtf they're doing. Just to recap, it's a Speedtek 3.33 billet final gear and Nismo GT LSD.

They brought it to another shop that I know well from way back and it took them a month and they apologized a few times and stated they had to prioritize some promod clients with blown motors. I appreciated the honesty after dealing with the other place... all they did was spew lies.

While the car was out over summer, I took the opportunity to work on a few non critical items. I replaced my front tension rods as the pillow balls were just about due. I removed the entirety of my hicas system. I was running the two original 5/16" fuel lines as feed and I had added a 3/8 aluminum line for return. I went ahead and removed that aluminum line and used one of my old hicas lines going to the back. I left the other hicas line as well as a spare. Finessed my WMI system and a few other little things.

I'll more then likely pop it back in tomorrow night. I'll be happy to drive it after all this time. I just need to schedule a day for an alignment and dyno session.

Duncan, thank you for this. The previous owner did say that he paid a shop to rebuild the engine with forged components. I have no way of verifying this, but I know that the shop wasn't detail oriented as there are mix n matched screws everywhere. And they did not replace the coolant water hoses or metal line under the plenum that was rusted. Last year, i replaced all the coolant hoses.

As for the welch plugs. . in my drawing, is this where the transmission connects to it? image.thumb.png.79b3fbf8f4571e2b707d1c438661e444.png

Confirmation of non OEM pistons and rods could easily be done by popping a sparkplug out to verify piston top and oil pan to confirm rods. You could also probably just fiddle with a borescope through your oil drain actually without even removing the pan.

Good thing they found them. Last thing you want to hear is them acting like they don't know what you're talking about

I was certain that's what they were going to pull... Even after I spoke to them, I didn't believe him when he said he would go look. I had already pulled the part#'s out I needed and was planning on heading to my local dealer to order them before they closed.

I was shocked when they did actually find them and delivered them for me. First time they did something right.

  8. So just to add insult to injury, the new shop that has my differential called me earlier today to inform me that I'm missing a few bolts with my differential. I thought my days of dealing with the original shop were over, but surprise; it isn't.

Luckily after calling them, they found the parts and delivered them to the new shop. I was about to lose my shit. It also seems the new shop has already started working on it, so hopefully I'll finally get it back this week.

nice, look forward to the update

Amayama just informed me that they're still discontinued. No idea what happened with their system but I remember them going from available to discontinued roughly 2 years ago.

Strange that it reset itself to available again, but it was clearly an error. Aw well, it is what it is. Cheers.

@TurboTapin might be easier for you to buy my car, and ship it to Canada. Turn key and ready to go, no need to wait for workshops.

Ready for skids/track/street takeovers (seems common for you lot on that continent :D

I might not need the car, but I'll gladly take your diff. At this rate, shipping it from Australia would be quicker then waiting around playing musical shop, wondering who has it and when it will be done lol.

    What happened with your diff?

I forgot to update this. Well still no diff in hand...

After many calls, the next time I spoke with Lordan, was July 28th. I was assured that they had brought it to another shop and that the owner was going to take care of it personally. I was told it would be done within a week, latest Friday August 4th. This was the first time I was given a firm date that was so close, so I didn't escalate it more then that. We'll that was a dumb mistake as August 4th came and went... I was not surprised. I called yesterday morning August 7th, was told it would be this week, I said you said the same thing last week... He said he'd call the owner to confirm a date and get back to me within 20-30 minutes. 3-4 hours later and no call so I once again started calling and didn't get a response.

He picked up the phone this morning. After my usual bickering, I got the shop information where the diff is and he asked that I deal with them directly moving forward. Being such a kind individual, he mentioned that he isn't charging me a mark up (Like I give 2 shits). Good news is the differential is at a very well known and reputable shop that has been open for decades. I was not originally aware they did diff work, but I did have them machine and assemble a built Honda D16 block for me roughly 15 years ago with no issues. The funny part is after calling and explaining my situation to them, they mentioned that it was impossible I would of received it august 4th as they were closed and on vacation the last two weeks... Hopefully it's the last time I have to deal with Lordan and his constant lies.

This new shop didn't want to answer too many questions as they were not made aware of me and were still looking at the other shop as the client which is respectable. They did confirm that it would be done in 2 weeks though and that they would call the original shop to clarify.

So just to recap, I dropped this diff off June 6th and in theory I should now receive it ~August 21st. Bananas is all I can say... Hopefully I'll get to dyno tune it and enjoy it a bit before winter hits. I'll be leaving them a terrible review on Google, Facebook and across our local boards but sadly I think that's all I can do at this point. If they had just been upfront from the get go, I would of either avoided this work until winter or purchased another used diff for all of ~400$ so I can continue using the car. What a shame that after countless days last summer and this winter to get my build complete and ready for this summer, it was all put on hold by something so trivial.

Series 1 R32's had clear indicators. Series 2 had amber indicators.

Keep in mind R32 GTRs were designed and released almost a year after the S1 was released, and they came out with amber indicators as they were moulded from a single piece of plastic (to save weight - because racecar). The original plan was to have clear indicators with a tiny bubble in amber for road regulation compliance. Once the GTR look became popular, they made the clear bit amber too in the S2 - albeit still made from 2 pieces of plastic.

A very very common mod was to change the S1 indicators to update the look. Also didn't help that S1 indicators very frequently cracked around the bulb fitting and you ended up with condensation inside.

The designers went back to the original intent of all clear headlights in the R33.

Yes that's also my understanding. My S1 had amber indicators but I'm presuming they were swapped out at some point. I went ahead and ordered the S2 indicators.

where are you ordering brand new GTST indicators from? they are discontinued aren't they?

They are or where but they popped up on Amayama again as available. I regretted not getting one two years ago and didn't want to miss my opportunity now in case it's a fluke. I ordered the later model one. I'll let you know if it's the full amber one, once it arrives.

bottom line is that warranty work is least profitable for the dealership (generally) because the manufacturer decides the price they get paid for a particular job and dealership is obliged to do it. service in warranty and service out of warranty is where they make their money

Back in 2019 I had a 2010 Nissan Rogue with the first gen CVT transmissions. I never had any issues with my transmission but knew they were prone to fail and Nissan had bumped up the transmission warranty to 10 years. To avoid failure down the road, I figured I'd try my hand at getting it replaced for free before the warranty was over.

I called the dealer and made something up about it making noise; they told me to come in the same day. On my arrival they mentioned how bad they were and that it really needs to be changed. I have yet to say anything and they're already pushing for a replacement. They ask to scan the codes as they need proof for warranty claim with Nissan HQ. They come back and say there's no transmission codes but not to worry they will have a mechanic drive around with me to confirm the noise.

At this point I figure the jig is up... Mechanic hops in and tells me to get on and off the highway. I drove all of 2 km's, he states multiple times the transmission is making noises (I hear absolutely nothing) and that it needs to be replaced this week. I go along with it and say yea yea I hear it! Sounds bad, very bad! Need this fixed.

Two days later, I had a new transmission at zero cost. I'm sure they're making money on warranty claims to make up that much bullshit to get the job lol.

Yeah, I'd be curious to know what's going on mechanically and why it's different.

I do want to clarify what I was saying about the Nismo twin plates though. It's definitely not silent. It's just that in an everyday situation, say in the city with even just a little bit of traffic around, it very much blends into the background. But for example at night when it's quiet it is definitely very noticeable. We came home the other night and my partner got out and went "Is that normal? Is that your clutch?", referring to the clonking and chatter from the clutch. IMO a small price to pay for how nice it is to drive.

Understood. We may just have different perceptions of it as my wife says the same lol. As for mechanical, everything is fine on my end. Everything is new including the trans and I've taken it apart to confirm nothing funky is going on.

I never had an issue with my super copper mix twin competition clutch.

was absolutely great to use as a daily for over 2 years

I want to agree with Chris and Neill here and it makes me wonder whether you should give the Nismo Super Coppermix Twin a try. I run it in my wagon and it's fine for daily driving. There's a tiny bit of chatter at idle and low rpm but really not much. Not enough for someone who doesn't pay attention to notice. You almost have to open the door and lean out to hear it. And that's in a grandpa spec car so it's not being masked by a loud exhaust or anything. Huge improvement over the single plate clutch that was in there before. I don't miss the heavy clutch pedal feel one bit.

I wonder whether the gearbox matters as well. The R34 GTRs that I have seen tend to sound like a bag of bolts in the dryer at idle. Does it make a difference whether it is the 5 speed or the 6 speed Getrag behind it?

I run a 6 speed CD00A trans and just looked into it, and they are supposably also very loud. It may be amplifying it. Thanks for the heads up. I always assumed it came from my clutch alone, never thought of the trans.

I even inspected it last time I pulled my trans to see if something seemed off and everything was mint. Bag of bolts describes it perfectly haha.

If it's just a VLSD, you could throw it back together with a handful of sand and two broken bastard files and it would still work as good as it ever did. If the pinion shaft hasn't been pulled out of it, there's no science in putting one back together. Shimming a VLSD is the equivalent of the sand and the files anyway, so who cares?

TT, put it back together yourself. Give it a spin. It'll likely be fine as. If it turns out to be noisy, then you go looking for qualified alternatives. FWIW though, If you're a diff/trans specialist, you do not need to know anything about R200s to set up an R200. They are no different to any other diff.

I brought it in for a Nismo GT LSD and Speedtek 3.33 gear install. Had it not been for the pinion shaft removal, I would have done it myself.

I was stuck at work late but I plan on visiting them tomorrow. I'm confident I'll report back tomorrow with another funny story.

  18. Here's a long story, but I'm currently having roughly the same issues. I dropped off a rear differential for some work at a local shop June 6th and I set clear expectations that I wanted it back in time to get it installed for my June 28th dyno day.

June 10th I get a call that parts will take 3-4 weeks to arrive (Side shims and pinion bearings) by a gentlemen named Alex. This is were things started going awry as the parts were available from the dealer within a week. I presumed they were trying to buy time to work on other projects but I let it go.

I call and email them everyday between June 20th-29th to get an update and finally get called back around the 30th, two days after my scheduled dyno day and I'm told that the guy who was working on my diff (Lordan) took personal time off and would be back July 6th. I'm told nobody else is aware of the diff. This is bullshit because the guy who is away did not originally start working on my diff. I ask about the other guy (Alex) and I'm told he has no idea either...

I call July 6th, 7th, but only get a call back on June 8th by Lordan who took time off. He states that the shims are back order. I ask him for the specific part number because as per Nissan EPC, all the shim thicknesses are still available. He says he'll send me the part# in an hour or two. To add insult to injury, he never sends me the part# and the next day when I call, I'm told he's gone for a week to a karting competition. Once again, I'm told nobody can help.

July 17th, Lordan calls back saying that he is waiting for the part# from Alex. I'm surprised to hear this as I was told Alex originally knew nothing about my diff but now he seems to be once again running the show...

July 18th, I asked to speak to Lordan. He's away again this time climbing Mount Everest, or who knows what. Lordan is the owner of the shop and clearly needs to spend more time at said shop. The fun part is I then ask to speak to Alex... I'm told he is no longer employed by them.

Many futile calls later, I get a call back by some new guy on July 21st being told that the shims I need do not have a part number and cannot be ordered. While chuckling I ask wtf does that mean exactly... He states they have to be custom made and that they cannot help me any further. This new guy recommends I bring it to another shop which he names and states they bring their Nissan diffs there when they have issues. First off, not only is that not reassuring at all but the worst part is I know this other shop and I'm convinced they do zero work on Nissans. I hang up right away knowing this is bullshit and call the other shop. I ask them about doing work on a Skyline R200 rear diff.. he states they have never worked on nor will they ever work on Nissan diffs. Absolutely furious I call back and ask wtf is going on. He changes his story at this point and says he only gave me that shop name as an example.... best part is he then asks me when I'll come pick up my disassembled diff. I impolitely ask if he believes it's normal that I dropped off a working diff almost 2 months ago and I'm now expected to pick up a box of diff parts ? He says he'll speak to Lordan.... I'm told 2 hours later that they will make it right and they will have it done by another shop and it will be taken care of.

This ladies and gentlemen is why I do all of my own work. I'm calling tomorrow for an update. If I hear anything other then "It will be ready in a week by the other shop and here's the contact information" and the story matches after I call the other shop, I'll go in person tomorrow night and put an end to this gong show.
