Been there done that, had a problem with my car, after a week of running around and paying $500 for parts it turned out to be nothing to do with them and cost me another $500 for a mechanic to fix it. $1000 in the hole.

And how is the standard ehxaust housing still making power at 8400?

do you have a built engine dave, if not how is your engine liking being spun to 8400rpm?

What sort of management are you running, if you have a power fc with the hand controller mounted in the cabin you would have been able to see the knock go up and then be able to do something about it, at the least you should have an afr gauge which would have shown it leaning out and you could have done something about it before blowing the head gasket, although you say its bad luck remember the old saying "Luck favours the prepared". Also i would recommend machining the head and block to make 100% sure you have a good mating surface.

I think its pretty much instant, at the most it would be in there when they get back to the office.

Common sense would have gone a long way here, if any one in my car says they feel like spewing they get kicked the f**k out, do you know how hard it is to get the smell of spew out of your car, not to mention how violated the car will feel, you have betrayed its trust, it will for ever hate you.

VIC ROADS cannot suspend the rego of a car registered in NSW, might try reading previuos posts again. They do pick a lot of things at times, the point of this is as you pointed out you have a big top mount and everything else, if they pick all of these things then vic roads will be checking EVERYTHING listed on the defect before they clear it, if they dont know that any of this stuff was on there previously then its easier to cover it up with smaller changes as vic roads wont be looking at those areas.
