Rb30 Power Delivery, Should It Be Better? How?
Cubes replied to Black_R33's topic in Engines & Forced Induction
Its not an assumption when multiple RB30DET's on the same dyno are suffer nosing over and the common denominator is the stock inlet plenum; drop a plenum on them and power peaks at a higher rpm. I know of 4 RB30DET's on Shauns dyno who all nose over early with the stock plenum. Its only the ones with aftermarket plenums (another 3 that I know of) that don't have that issue. I wouldn't call that an assumption. Yes.. I've attached it. Do note a dyno run was performed on 8psi, the new plenum fitted, 800cc injectors fitted, afr's tidied up then another power run performed. Ignition was not touched, Interestingly at 17psi its now running more ignition that it was when it was at 8psi. So no doubt push more ignition in to it on 8psi and the mid range would come up. There's too many rb30det's that have been run on the same dyno that regardless of exhaust size if they stick with the stock plenum they nose over early. Mine, Bl4ck32's, a couple of VLT's, MR1 and MR2's. Yep Shaun at Boostworx has done a lot of these now.. He said the plenum is the way to go to bring that peak power back up to a respectable rpm. Regardless of boost run with the GT35r .82 power always peaks at the same rpm. Be it 8psi or 20psi. Please see the previous attached dyno sheet where I plotted the red. Thats making 300rwkw odd on 19psi with cams etc so as you can see its NOT the stock CAMS causing power to nose over. -
I've started to give this a go without removing the dash. Any one have pics of all sides of the evaporator box? The front half is seperating but its like the rear lower half is still attached by a screw. argg

Yes.. HPIA does have a strange nonstd line up there.

Rb30 Power Delivery, Should It Be Better? How?
Cubes replied to Black_R33's topic in Engines & Forced Induction
Have you ignored my previous posts? The dyno sheet attached previously, the red plot is of an RB30DET making over 300rwkw with a gt35r .82, tomei poncam 260duration 9mm lift, std inlet manifold, std exhaust manifold, ~19psi and AVGAS. As you can see, an early rpm peak power. The same occured to the 'mr2' until he dropped an aftermarket plenum on. Kastin, The RB25DET plenum doesn't 'run out of flow' it simply isn't suited to the 3ltr, it was after all designed for the 2.5ltr. -
Has The New Commodore Changed Your View
Cubes replied to Smurf's topic in General Automotive Discussion
BMW's won't break down that often. lol The father inlaw owns one and has spent a packet keeping it up and running. (cracked heads, failed idle control etc) BMW's are nothing more than a European Commodore. Merc, they are much better. -
are you sure? It was the introduction of BB around the same time? A mates VL did close to 300,000km's with the std bush turbo running 12psi with no bov, he travelled almost 200,000km's in it.
-
33NIZ, Ceffy's were also realeased from factory without a bov, they too ran a ceramic turbo. As Simon from Nizpro states... The Bov's are there for emission purposes only. Nothing more nothing less.

R12a isn't the old gas R12 is, note the lack of A! R12a is 100% enviro friendly unlike the R134a. R12a is cheap, I had mine vac'd and recharged for $130. Alot here in Adelaide don't work with R12a, I believe thats because they need to be certified to work with it.

lmao.... I honestly wasn't sure he was...

When did SydneyKid say it poses no restriction/isnt the case of power nosing over early in that thread? Have another read of the thread. Nothing of the like was said. Sydneykid said (refering to the dyno sheet attached) one is better off with a motor that doesn't rev where you shift up early as the motor will be more reliable and it will accelerate quicker (more low mid torque) so a peaky power curve rather than a wide power curve. HOWEVER... With a GT35r this is not the case as the power band is too narrow, SK then went on to say well its poorly setup and shouldn't be run. etc etc.. Which is true. A GT35r .82 on an Rb30DET with the stock plenum is a bad setup. They need a plenum simple as that. Run a GT30 and I believe with the stock plenum its a near perfect match. I have seen it with my own eyes. It is what causes the rb30det's to nose over early. The attached dyno sheet was the back to back run at 8psi, no ebc, 2.5" exhaust. The before power run was tuned nicely. The after power run only had its afr's tidied up as 800cc twin sprays were dropped in. NO ignition was touched. So its quite possible there were gains to be had. Do what you will... Myself and my tuner knows what prevents the rb30det's making power up close to 7000rpm. If the car that makes its peak power at 5500rpm is faster than the one that makes its peak power at 7000rpm is irrelevant. So choose what sort of motor you want. A turbo diesel or a higher reving typical sports car motor. The comparison dyno sheet attached is of: RED: An rb30det setup (gt35r .82), stock plenum, stock exh manifold, Tomei 260duration 9mm cams, an EBC, 3" exhaust, 19psi ON AVGAS. Blue: the 8psi setup, no ebc, stock cams, aftermarket plenum, afr's tidied up, no ign tweaking ON PULP. Green: 17psi, no ebc but a bleeder, stock cams, aftermarket plenum and a little valve float. 1bar made 265rwkw, 2psi more (17psi) made another 5rwkw due to valve float. PULP. Do what you will with those results. There's more of others with aftermarket exh. manifolds and stock plenums still nosing over but I don't have the dyno sheets. My bets are throw AVGAS in to the blue/green rb30det, ditch the 2.5" and drop on a 3", the set of 260duration 9mm cams and boost will come on just as early BUT still hold to a higher rpm.

Rb30 Power Delivery, Should It Be Better? How?
Cubes replied to Black_R33's topic in Engines & Forced Induction
Disco, I'm came to my conclusion due to what I have seen with my very own eyes back to back.. Mr 1.. RB30DET stock exhaust manifold, stock plenum/runners, gt35r .82 and ran with stock cams then with Tomei 260 duration 9mm. Mr 2.. RB30DET stock exhaust manifold, stock plenum/runners and later dropped a short runner plenum on it. So essentially the setups are as identical as one could hope. Initially Mr 1 ran with stock cams, fiddled with cam timing and power still peaked early then nosed over. Mr 1 decided it must be cams so he dropped a set of Tomei 260dur 9mm cams in it. Power STILL peaked at the same rpm as the stock cams but the turbo spooled earlier and made more average power. Now Mr 2, power peaked almost identically to Mr 1 and then power nosed over. Fitted plenum up and instantly power held in to the higher rpms and power peaked later. Resulting in a higher average power that allows the car to accelerate quicker in the higher gears, he now gets more speed out of a lower gear and it is noticably quicker on the road being able to rev the car and hold the gear instead of shifting early. Quite a few rb30det's run up on Shauns dyno and its what he recommends as one of the first modifications you perform IF you want it making power at a higher rpm. He also said the stock exhaust manifold is good up to ~300rwkw, you then look at changing to some thing a bit nicer. Generally they see ~20-30rwkw increase at 300rwkw when dropping on a good exh. manifold on and touching nothing else other than tidying up the afr's/ign. I really do believe rb30det's nosing over early in the 5000's is caused by the std plenum. Once they are back to making power where they should cams and exhaust manifolds make them absolutely scream. I've attached a dyno sheet with mr1 and mr2's power curve. RED: Mr1 - stock plenum, stock exh. manifold, Tomei 260 9mm cams, 3" exhaust and ~19psi using an EBC BLUE: Mr2 - aftermarket plenum, stock exh. manifold, stock cams and 8psi - std wastegate setting GREEN: Mr2 - aftermarket plenum, stock exh. manifold, stock cams, 2.5" exhaust and 17psi with slight valve float, it made 265rwkw on 15psi, 2psi only gained 5rwkw due to the valve float. Another few psi saw lifters pump up and power peak to 280rwkw. No EBC was used just a simple cheap home made bleeder. The cams really bring the turbo on earlier + the 3" vs the 2.5" would no doubt help a little. It would be really nice to see how Mr2's would go with the same 260duration cams, valve springs sorted, a good EBC and a 3.5" exhaust. -
Hey ppls, I started to rip the car apart in an attempt to replace my climate control inlet air temp sensor and heater core that is leaking. I remember when the car was like new and had 60k on the clock around 5years ago, the air out of the dash vents would hit my face hard and cool the car and myself down quick. These days its a real struggle to adjust the vents to get a nice cool breeze on to my face, I have to direct both center vents and close the 2 outer. Pictures say a thousand words. As you can see the a/c/heater core (unsure which one it) is is blocked with crap, u can see the fins towards the front where I scraped a little of the junk away. Unbelievable.

Either way if it makes its peak power up over 6000rpm and holds power well then we know the plazman is working well. Am-Performance's has a stock exh. manifold, HAD a stock plenum and that nosed over after 5500rpm. Bolt the plenum on and it just wants to keep making power over 7000rpm and most importantly holding power. Just his valve springs are currently letting the package down. If it still noses over with the plazman then we know the inlet runners are the killer, do note that Ripz that has been playing with RB30dets since the dawn of time throws short runner gtr style plenums on all of his 30det's.

Well no wonder you were scratching your head wondering why det levels were high at only 300rwkwish. -

Auto's make a huge difference to spool. Another mate rb_man has an XR6t turbo (.5 comp and 1.06 iw rear) on his rb30det. That makes 1bar on the dyno by 3900rpm. It feels not too bad on the street but lacks the go in the first 2 gears compared to the .82 gt35r. Click third and it really hauls. -

Ahh ok so you run a gt30 .82 with the old setup and cracked 300rwkw? I was under the impression you previously ran a gt35r. nice. Hows the new motor coming along? -
When you say need to see car.. You mean a Sturt vis/engine number check not regency?

You say $160 to anodise the Fmic 'KIT' does that mean the piping as well or just the FMIC? -
Rb30 Power Delivery, Should It Be Better? How?
Cubes replied to Black_R33's topic in Engines & Forced Induction
Its not the cams its not the exhaust restriction. Its the std plenum. Dropping an aftermarket plenum on it and touching nothing else (bar the tune) and peak power will raise up close to 7000rpm and power will hold well to 7500rpm. Drop some cams in to it and power will hold until ~8000rpm. Drop cams in it with the std plenum and peak power will still be made in the same approx 5500RPM but the turbo will spool slightly earlier. So a waste of time and $$. I believe the GT35r .82 is a touch too big for a street rb30det that doesn't rev and make good power to at least 7000rpm. If you want to stick with the std penum don't go any bigger than the GT30r .82. GET A PLENUM ON IT!!!! I'm not speculating or guessing, I've seen it with my eyes on the dyno and then felt the power delivery before and after. Back to back on the dyno run the plenum made a huge difference to the average usable power when running the GT35r .82 on the rb30det.. I can't comment on a plazman plenum that retains the standard runners as the plenum used on my mates rb30det was a GTR/Greedy style setup. i.e short runners. It lost no off boost power (it actually appears to have picked up a touch) and returns the same fuel economy. Then work out why its not making any more power. It may be springs, it may be the exhaust manifold. What occurs? You dial in more boost and det levels go crazy or does it simply flatten off and not make any more power? -
A hard free rev? What have you done with your oil restrictors? How is your oil level? Its not over full? A hard rev to 7000rpm in the first 3 gears with the std restrictors saw my cam covers start to fill, the oil then begins pushing out the breathers in to the turbo -> afm pipe and then it really plooms smoke out the rear. :S

Will do.
