The car is setup to be at the pointy end of the field, and is a genuine no expense spared in the maintenance of it to keep it there.

I have been interstate working since Q3 2022 so the car has not been tracked since and it just sits in the shed for the foreeseeable since its rebuild (front diff let go, so did bearings and an update while engine was out) and driven a total of 20km on the street since.

With a little effort this can be taken from a capable track car to a well sorted street car new seats and tidy up the side skirt paint would keep it fresh or get out on the track and dominate.

Bad points – paint has been sand blasted on the side skirts, as per pics

Drivers seat has a slight tear in it

If you're temporarily here, use your WA rego?

I know of someone that has been here temporarily for 8 years and still has Vic rego...

Insurance says you got 2 weeks to change it over

How much less lag would you get if you went with let’s say a 0.83 housing. Exact same setup do you think that would be better?

I have not backed to backed the G35 900 housing but have on the 6466 - went from .84 to 1.15 did not loose any response and gained a touch more up top. I think E85 makes the old smaller rear housing argument redundant.

  4. Haha I am temporarily in QLD so to get it back on WA plates would be a nightmare it is at a stage of basically rally rego as its not like i drive it on the street that often unless going to an event or workshop or very rarely a early morning cruise.

I am assuming the problem was with drifters chopping the joint up?

Edit: Oops, I clicked the link to the thread notification thinking this was a response to my comment and said stuff explaining why I thought the G35 wasn't as suited to this situation and it could have looked like I was having a dig - and just realised you were responding to another comment.

    Ignore me!

interested to know why you dont think its suited

    what would go better

Sunshine coast club looks ideal for the pending move also, where is Doonan racetrack it seems to be secret squirrels? is it someones private property?

I have the awkward situation where my car is full rego in WA and it would never pass inspection in QLD, so will need to bring it over and trailer it everywhere.

Doesn't look like any other options?

When do you reckon boost will start to kick in and when do you think full boost will be on. Just a relative guess would be good. Also what gauge housing do you recommend.

    So I have a 2.8 with a G35900 with 1.06 twin scroll rear

    I dont have vcam

The dyno shows it laggier than it is on the street, it feels miles ahead of my 6466 .

G35900 was making a bar of boost around 3750rpm based off the motec dash.

  8. Fantastic guys thanks for the response

I am in Kangaroo Point atm, potentially moving up the coast towards noosa early next year so was trying to absorb as much knowledge as possible on QLD motorsport so I can work out my options.

  9. Howdy,

From WA where I had a good tune in on what events are on and where.

Recently moved to QLD and have managed to find the following

Skid Control events look well run and frequent

    Noosa hill climb

    Targa Great barrier reef

    Roll Racing

Are there any smaller events, or smaller race tracks I am missing out on for grass roots motorsport in QLD?

Either circuit racing or tarmac rally sprints or similar!

Just to clarify, has yours failed or are you worrying about how risky you're playing it?

No I am just wondering on how risky I am, I did a quick calc and believe i am sitting at around 2.3 pressure ratio so a bit of room up the sleeve.

Can you please elaborate on your full setup? Im interested to see how the match plots

    -altitude
    -fuel used
    -exact engine displacement
    -max engine speed (RPM)
-max boost target (2 bar or 2.5 bar?)
-what rpm are you fully spooled and WG open
    -cyl head and cam spec
-downpipe / exhaust size and config, muffler used, air filter setup, etc.

. The g series are optimized for response and low inertia, while I have not blown up any of the G35-900 and i absolutely love the turbo, I saw (2) g25's die from high altitude overspeed many years ago and learned to respect turbo speed the same as any other high end piece of equipment.

    edit:
@lithium - funny that the big drag race precision turbos have speed sensor ports now 😁

Folks, reading through the last few pages of posts here, let me chime in with my personal experience on not one, but two Garrett G35-900 turbos i have been through. The first failed at ~2030 km. the second failed at ~2300 km.

The nature of failure was very gradual, with a faint, low frequency "Police siren" or "wooooo" noise accompanying spool, that gradually got louder to the point where the compressor inducer was seen to make contact with the compressor housing, and the shaft was bent.

Oil feed lines on both were brand new. No oiling issues, as all Oil parameters are monitored. No coolant supply problems either.

Tune was carried out by the most respected JDM Builder and tuner here in Dubai, and happens to receive, build and tune vehicles from all over the middle east and north Africa.

The first turbo was sent to Garrett for inspection, and they responded with the following:

    Claim.jpg.f41bf22239d9621cef8165578cd4eaac.jpg

    880695-5001S

Analysis Findings : Rotor damage - Overspeed -
Technician Conclusion: Turbocharger returned with rubbing wheels vs. contours. Damage of compressor piston rings and overheated of ball bearing as a consequence of Turbo overspeed. During overspeeding cycles, the excessive growth of the compressor wheel may cause a permanent deformation (growth) of the central bore of the wheel, which forms into a barrel shape and is characteristic of a wheel which has been taken beyond its normal operational speed limit. Recommendations: The reason for turbocharger overspeeding needs to be investigated on the vehicle. Possible contributing factors: performance tuning, fuelling problems, poor combustion causing high level of deposits in VNT (vanes blocked). Actuator not controlled correctly: ECU problems, command from ECU not reaching actuator, wiring/connection faults, actuator hose leakage, PWM valve faulty, hose blow-off etc may be contributing factors. Blocked/restricted air filter or hoses.

The turbos failed due to overspeed, and were not happy pushing 2.5 bar of boost for extended durations. Both failures were consistent in nature with respect to how they occurred as well as the time period/mileage as the tunes and driving style were more or less identical in nature.

I did not bother sending in the second unit for a claim.

I would recommend Either Garrett GTX Gen 2 as those are extremely robust, (I have run a GTX3071r , and GTX3076r in the past) or Precision CEA to avoid going through similar hassles.

I am now swapping in a Precision 6466 CEA Gen 2.

Hope this helps some of you decide. If you do purchase a G Series Garrett turbo, don't make the mistake i made; do buy a turbo speed sensor, and follow it religiously as part of the tuning process.

anyone else had G35 900s or similar fail from running 2bar of boost?

  13. 1.15 T4 divided 6466 Gen 2

    vs

    G35 900 1.06 T4 Divided (6262 equivalent)

THE SAME  it builds identically and ends up =/- 2% max power

We did play around with cam timing to bring it on earlier after this dyno graph and

street logs have it around 1 bar at 3750 or so on the street in 4th gear vs 4200 for the 6466 but doesn't show any benefit on the dyno run.

a cheeky little launch said it comes on earlier also

Haven't tracked it yet, but am keen to do a rally sprint and see how it goes

  14. So essentially you have a 30 year old car, that has had all sorts running through the fuel tank and into the lines and filters

E85 will clean the gunk off all those surfaces and send it straight to your injectors.

So a E85 fuel pump, lines, fuel tank clean and ensuring your injectors are up to the task is essential for happy motoring on E85.

LOL one financial death at a time. Thanks, I appreciate it.

I actually just paid for a carvx report and found out more about the hidden parts installed on the car. Probably should have done this earlier.

    1. HKS GT-SS turbos (same as Garrett -9s): I'll visually verify, but very happy about this.

    2. HKS cams: Doesn't say profile, I'll open up the covers to verify what I can

    3. HKS fuel pump (280L): Will I max this out with E85 on GT-SS/-9s? I've seen mixed on this through other threads.

    4. OS Giken clutch: I can't read the model; the writing is messy after "OS Clutch". I might hold off on the Nismo twin if the OS Giken is a twin and current model for rebuilding. I found the clutch very easy to drive in traffic and on hills.

I would skip the HKS fuel pump and go for an integrated system of pump, lines and injectors to switch over to E85
