I've just fitted some Splitfire SF-DIS-001 coilpacks. Initial test shows a big improvement. The car now starts instantly and no more misfire under acceleration. Not bad for an hour's work. The manual has a warning saying that after fitting them, you may get knocking/detonation and should adjust the timing to suit. I'm fairly sure the timing isn't adjustable on these engines. Is that the case? Should I be disconnecting the battery to do an ECU reset, or is that not a thing on these ECUs? I'm also thinking that next time I go into that area, I want to get rid of the pointless cover. Literally the only use it serves is to provide a mount for the power transistor. Question is where is a good place to relocate the power transistor to? Should I just cut the cover down to just the last 4 screws as even this will make it less annoying to deal with as it won't conflict with the J pipe. Anything else I should know?

Coil pack Hi Guys bought a second hand coil pack for my vq25dd. My car has coil packs 22448 AL515. The one I bought is 22448 AL510.. It seems to be running sluggish now. The guy said that the coil.pack was compatible. Is he correct or did he sell me the wrong part

Had a misfiring problem - took it to local mechanic who replaced one coil pack and the car was running well for 1 day then misfire returned. I used one of the diy tutorials to replace all coil packs. car ran fine for approx 40kms then started misfiring again - nowhere near as bad as they were misfiring before I changed all the coil packs but misfiring nonetheless.What could be causing this? Spark plugs had been changed 7 months ago. also noticed that the two coil packs had different numbers on - 4 of them are numbered 543, 1 is 791 and another 8X5. they all have HANSHIN MCP1440 on the back of em except the one numbered 791 has MCP1340. I purchased my Skyline in November and noticed that at High RPM, I'm getting some odd engine knocking. Since then, I stored it for winter and never reved past 4000 rpm. I plan on sending it off to paint now and I starting taking it apart and decided I'd look at my plugs just to see how they looked because the previous owner said they were due when I bought it. Upon first inspection, the plugs didn't seem too fouled and the gaps weren't abnormally large. I then decided to shop for new ones using the code that was on them to get the same ones or equivalent because I figure that whoever put them there did the research too. My mistake. I was running Bosch FR6DP1X Spark plugs which have all the correct specs except the height. There are 2 types: ISO and JIS. These were ISO which are a few mm shorter than the JIS spec. Uh oh. After realizing the plugs were wrong, I carefully observed the top of the plugs and noticed corrosion and some pitting. New spark plugs were required. So after more research, I decided that I was going to purchase the NGK 5691 which are also known as BCPR7EIX-11. Great! Since I have the coil packs off, I figure to myself that I will take the time to test them. So I take out my trusty multimeter, set it to Ohms and check the primary coils. The spec is from 0.6 - 0.9 ohms. They were all perfect. Yes! I then proceed to taking the rubber boots off to inspect the leads. Fudgesicle. Here's what I found: Long story short, Make sure you run JIS spec Spark plugs in your Skylines and Never trust that someone else did the research. I do have a question, Does anyone have pics of the internals of their OEM coil packs so I can compare? I've been speaking with Paul at Performance Wise and he showed me the internals of the Yellow Jacket Coil Packs that he sells. They don't seem to have a lead at the end of the spring (I dont have any leads on Coil 2 & 4, but the rest seem to). Thanks for the help. Cheers! DynamiX

Intermittent running problems Hi everyone, should probably start this off with a bit of background info. this is my back and fourth to work car, i do have a lead foot sometimes, but I don't need it for the power. my r33 non turbo automatic with the RB25DE has been running rough intermittently when it first started I thought it might have been a fuel issue, so changed the fuel filter, oil, oil filter and blew out the air filter i pulled the coil packs out and they were starting to show small problems Problem continued , had to wait a few days to fix that but finally got round to it, cleaned the carby and mass flow, the spark plugs i had thought should be still good since the last service not many k's before but a fair amount of time it drove smooth the next day, then started to drive rough 30mins in the day after. i pulled it apart again deciding to change the plugs, chucked carby cleaner drove the next day calmly, day later ran rough 35mins into drive decided the coolant temperature sensor needed to be replaced drove to and from work smoothly then jumped in to run down the road and it didn't just wait to be 10 or 15 mins into the drive, it ran rough all the way

Hi, I started a thread not long ago about misfiring under medium to heavy acceleration. Poking around I had really odd results testing the resistance on the coil pack ignitor. It lead me to believe the ignitor was faulty; replaced this and the problem didn't go away. I'm still curious what the resistance of other ignitors are... when I get a multimeter I'll test the re-furb unit too. In short, here is what i did: Replaced the ignitor - same. Dropped in a set of BCPR6ES-11 - same Dropped in a set of BCPR6ES - better but still same same Checked for un-metered air. Found K&N oil from the panel in the air box. Replaced with paper filter, cleaned AFMs with CRC AFM cleaner - marginally better with the BCPR6ES in there. Inspected the coil packs. No cracking. Did some reading about coil packs and had a penny drop moment. Basically, two things: The coils packs, as in the induction coils in the unit itself generally work, or don't. Rule of thumb, there are examples of them failing but not for this post. So, in my case the coil pack fires, and it works. It's the plastics around the pack that break down. Sometimes visibly, other times not. Stumbled onto a YouTube video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qirx_G4x5i0 Guy with an Aussie accent. I'd be shocked if he isn't on SAU. If you are out there and read this, chime in and take credit. Bought a second hand set of coil packs, some contact cleaner and 2x 7g tubes of dielectric grease. Pulled the coil packs out and apart, sprayed everything with contact cleaner. Then a generous ring of dielectric grease around where the pack flanges out and also underneath the flange. Put the clean springs back in, slid the plastic part nozzle on with another run of dielectric grease around the base. To be sure. Could have been done easily with one tube but being super generous and ended up using a tiny part of the second tube. On the first drive, oh my! How different the car feels. Smoother acceleration, less backfiring from the exhaust, better (smoother?) engine sound and no misfiring. Looking at the old coil packs. See the below pictures. The rim has oxidized, the springs are dirty (pics don't show it) and inside the coil are black marks... If the OEM coils are as good as anything aftermarket, I'd spend the $30 on parts and in an hour it'll be like new. A run of dielectric grease is on my maintenance list whenever I do plugs. HTH someone else.

Unfortunately, out doing a "road test" in the R33 GTR, with the street tires, and now with bucket loads of extra torque, managed to break second gear. Same sort of use/abuse with the old coils packs couldn't produce the same 4 wheel power slides, just under heavy acceleration! Luckily I had a spare gearbox, so I could make it to the track days. We aim to solve common problem of spark blow out at high boost levels as often experienced by many owners which often resulted in dyno down time, performance/efficiency sacrifice, running ridiculously small spark gap and associated costs. Additional information and features Our RB to Audi R8 coil conversion harness features; 100% Plug and Play. Remove your old OEM loom from the connectors, plug your new one in. Bypasses the OEM igniter completely (where applicable). Teflon F.E.P wire insulating material capable to withstand higher temperatures than OEM PVC insulation and resistant to most oils and chemicals. 2.0mm2 wire conductor cross section area for the constant power and power ground. 1.5mm2 wire conductor cross section area for signal and signal ground. OEM specification weather proof connectors. P.E.T wire braided sleeve and connector boots. Heat shrink with built in glue for good adhesive strength. Professionally crimped terminals. Separate power ground and signal ground terminals to avoid ground loop. 2-step cross-checking process, bench tested and tagged to ensure a guaranteed start and product traceability. If you have made variations to your setup (i.e. engine conversion etc) please check your ignition loom and cross reference the main connector to our pictures on the website. Should any part of the loom be close to any part of the exhaust, it must be moved or sufficiently protected from thermal damage. We do not incorporate a wire loop in our harnesses for use with an inductive timing light as our experience proves it to be an unreliable source. To set ignition base timing, we recommend the use of coil on plug extension lead (such as DAT-Equipment TE010 or the like) to latch your inductive clamp onto for a much more reliable reading. Our RB20/RB25/RB26 conversion mounting plate features; Direct bolt on with all fasteners provided. Coil packs can be removed individually from the mounting plate when installed. Correct indexing of coil pack placement. Provides lateral support on the upper body of the coil pack (removes dynamic bending stresses on the fragile spark plug in comparison of when no mounting plate is used).
