A littl while back I blew the ceramic turbos, and had them rebuilt hi flowed with steel wheels. After putting it all back together, it also seems that the engine has suffered a bit from the turbos blowing up - it's down on compression in cylinders 2 and 3 and blowing a bit of smoke (but only on gear changes of whem blow off valves open)

Anyhow, I haven't had the time or cash to pull the engine down for what I understand will be a rebuild at some point in time.

What I do want to know is - and this may seem a stupid question but bear with me, my old man has organised a drag meet/speed trial in my small home country town - he wants as many cars out there as he can, and would like me to run mine, even if it's just a couple of half hearted runs - but lets face it, does anyone ever go half hearted?

What is the chances that I'm gonna do some real damage - like dropping a bearing, or putting some crap through my new turbos?

From the soudn of things you will do some serious damage!

If your engine is on the edge then flogging it will more than likely make it go pop. If the turbos are recently rebuilt, then they should be ok. Either way its rebuild time for you.

find out why its low on compression. do a leak down test and a compression test. if its just worn rings then go for it hammer the crap outta it till it dies i say :P

post your compression details

Yeah, I've got the results written down at home, I'll post em up tonight, but just from memory, I think all cylinders were about 145-150, and cylinders 2 and 3 were down by about 10.

down by 10psi isnt a real issue, its not perfect but if the biggest variance you have is 10psi between the highest reading and lowest reading piston thats should be ok.

How many kms has the motor done? What oil are you running? If the motor is just a little tired because of high kms, hence the oil burning, i would still beat up on it.

Change the oil and filter before you go, and have some fun i would say.

I just found the comp results:

All cylinders were 145 - 150 like I said, but 2 and 3 were both at 125.

Not sure on how many kms engine has done, it came from a half cut that also had and aftermarket dash, which had 25, 000 on it. It's an R33 engine though.

Can't recall the specific oil, it's pennzoil I believe, certainly not cheapie stuff.

Sorry that I'm a bit vague, the car is stored at my folks place up country - no parking at my place

are you running twin turbos on a rb25??

well if the lowest reading is 125 then thats a 25psi difference and thats a tad too much

try and do a leak down test and see where its leaking, ie rings, headgasket, valves etc

if you dont really have the cash to fix it, dont push it then cause by the sounds of things the engine has hard a rough life and is on its last legs. In saying that if it was me i would still be booting the shit out of it, you gotta teach these engines a lesson... :D

It's an rb26, with a set of slides hi-flows. I haven't had a leak down test done, so that might be the next step.

I'm def keen to give it a flogging, and I'm prepared to cop some ring/piston/bore damage, but not so keen on dropping a bearing or valve, or putting some big chunks through the turbos.

    • A 1.5 way is a 2 way. It is just a 2 way with a less aggressive ramp on overrun.
    • The ABS and/or TCS being missing/broken will not cause the engine to misbehave. It just casues CEL to come on and annoy you. The CEL is useless if it is always on, so you have to do the things you have to do to get rid of it, so it can be useful. Being a Stag ECU, then yes, it will not expect TCS to be present. But it will expect ABS to be present and working. You will need to either make the ABS CU talk to the ECU (don't ask me what that will take on an NA R34), and make sure the hardware is working....or, you just need to blank it out in Nistune. Do not persist with the stock ECU. You will just have problems. Gte it Nistuned. Start from there. DO YOU HAVE A BOOST SENSOR? The ECU's boost sensor that it. It is connected to the loom at the rear of the coil cover. Usually rides on the firewall on an R34, but is usually bolted down to a bracket along with all the other crap at the back of the coil cover when a Neo is dropped into another car. If you do not have it, the ECU will shit the bed. So, do you have one?
    • So sadly the fuel pump etc was not it. The pump and filter is new and it is still cutting around 4000 rpm. A read something about ABS/TCS (engine is from stagea and ECU too so no TCS) and i dont know for 100% that my car has ABS. It has ABS "cube" in engine bay but i dont think it works(or at least from my braking experience). Can be something like that?  I will be driving the car next week to Nistune tuner to properly see what is wrong...
    • the Tomei LSD fluid with lsd kit. frustrated that it was shaking the car to crap and affecting everything else negatively, I pulled the diff last night, and removed the lsd carrier, could not find anything wrong, however it seem to be 100 locked up acceleration, and deacceleration, wondering if they sent me a 2 way not a 1.5??  either way I installed the stock open carrier back in place. test drove everything smooth as butter again. no shake, shutter, random, what felt like clutch slip and grab or drive shaft play, etc. something differently wrong in side the lsd. I might bother taking it apart (if possible) to figure out what's going on inside this carrier, as bought too long ago to return.  only draw back is its back to a one wheel wonder.
