ok basically as part of my rebuild i will be going a new clutch

but i can't decide between a jim berry single or twin plate of some description.

car will be putting out at least 330kw at the wheels (what it was doing before rebuild) and only cams being changed so not expecting much more.

car is a 32 gtr and is NOT daily driven. only weekends or when i want to go out during the week and don't feel like driving the work ute.

330rwkw is twin plate on a 2wd. 330AWkw is probably going to be getting close to triple plate territory. No way a single would hold that kinda power.

My mate recently got his Jim Berry clutch rated pushing 290rwkw in his XR6T, clutch is nice and holds the power well with alot of shudder, my twin plate exedy and hks before provided no shudder and reasonable driving and never slipped, now im pushing 500hp. Value for buck the Jim Berry is the way to go, be half the price of a jap twin plate.

you are to be mistaken my friend...very much mistaken...

i raced a low 10 sec GTR for 3 years solid with a Jim Berry single plate...450 AWKW+

never slipped once and was one of the most reliable parts on the car.

now run a NPC twin plate which already needs attention after 20 passes.

Truth be told, I've never heard of Jim Berry single plates (I'm in Japan) so I can't speak first hand of them. The clamping pressure must be huge on one of those. I know there is no Jap super single that could do that (ORC, OS GIKEN, etc.). I toasted a 1 month old ORC with just a RB25/TO4e on the initial tune! I run a OS Triple now.

Well thats fair enough because Jim Berry is Australian, he's well recommended on these forums for his great clutches...

Hi There dirt garage,I spoke to you a while ago on the phone and have since bought a single plate Jim Berry clutch partly on your comments, although I must confess I am more than a little bit worried about my choice of clamping pressure,4000lb especially in light of the fact that GTR'S have the consistent problem of cracking or breaking clutch pedal brackets. What clamp pressure was your single??Also why did you change to the NPC when you had such success with Jim's clutch??

Can I also ask you did you have to upgrade your pedal bracket to a Nismo one, or did you re-enforce it with weld, or leave it stock,if you have taken one out can you tell us the procedure to avoid damage to the dash etc as I think I'm going to take that pre-caution to avoid being stranded somewhere and having to wreck my re-coed gearbox to get home.Btw Jim and I chose the clamp pressure to hold 300-350kwatw to handle my future upgrades, although He doesn't like to quote kw that a clutch will hold, hope this is some help to the guy you replied to as well.Cheers Grey Pearl.

Hi There Monga,I am surprised that even though you report a lot of shudder with the Berry clutch that you still recommended it over the other ones, what price do you put on shudder or was it a typo error and you mean't not a lot of shudder with the Berry clutch.Cheers Grey Pearl.

Dont be mistaken in thinking that increased clamp means increased pedal effort...

Jim berry is the clutch guru. I could not recommend him highly enough. He has gotten me out of trouble on several occasions with conversions etc. an example of a clutch he did for me was a heavy duty organic behind a 1J. Clutch was originally done bt Dellows through some clutch mob in Penrith. Required that much pedal effort that it bent the pedal box. I sent entire clutch & flywheel assy to jim, came back with 40% less pedal effort required and had 20% more clamp. Have also run Jims Full monty single on many a 300kw GTSt and the odd 350kw GTR with excellent results. have a 3900lb solid ceramic going behind my LS1. this guy dose clutches for targa cars and consults for many clutch manufacturers. You have made the right choice.

I chose an NPC item due to the fact Mark Jacobsen has had great success with them and Croydon's always treated my choice of single plate with dismay. So i thought id try the NPC item as im producing over 900hp at the flywheel and simply thought that was beyond what a Jim Berry single plate (as good as they may be) could handle. Also looking to soon turn the NOS on in the car pushing that flywheel power figure in excess of 1000hp.

Never modified any of the clutch parts from STD factory issue (clutch cylinders, brackets etc)

Thanks for the reply mate and the re-assurance, as I hadn't read too many people running 4000lb clamp on this forum, and a reputable garage in melbourne bagged the crap out of using Jim Berry clutches saying they require too much travel to engage gears properly,I guess only time will tell how suitable my choice has been, will let you all know.Grey Pearl.

Thanks for your reply and explaination, I am purchasing a Nismo clutch pedal bracket, which Nismo claim is 1.75 times stronger than stock GTR one anyway as a precaution to install at the same time as my upgraded gearbox and clutch and a stronger better designed clutch fork pivot as well.Cheers and thanks for your advise on the phone Grey Pearl.

    • My dream is also to have a proper hoist, but I don't think it will ever happen. My quickjack is probably as close as I'll ever get, it really is very good though.
    • Yeah we keep on in the dailies, it is pretty poor how many animals get hit and the driver leaves without checking....have saved a couple of little ones over the years. Bit of a gruesome job though, pouches generally need to be cut open because they are so tight and often the joey doesn't realise mum is gone so they are still locked onto the teat. I checked the modules in front of the DS wheel where an oil cooler should go.... There is the radar unit - that can go for race use) One of the 2 HX water pumps, the silver cylinder. That needs to be kept but might be able to be relocated But the bad news, the big computer mounted vertically in front of the wheel (blocking any potential air exit) is the electric steering computer. That is required until/unless i do a hydraulic steering conversion, and in CAD based modern car design it is not like I can just pop a big unit like that somewhere else (plus the loom would be too short anywhere else too). So, the passenger side is OK to clear out (just use a smaller washer reservoir, potentially elsewhere), but the DS no beuno
    • Well, all the best with the new camry It was interesting to hear about the UK process, it is generally a lot more streamlined here with a shipping agent looking after all the import side (noting the exact final price can still be a surprise.....) and I've used a few different brokers on the japan (or US) side, and never had any trouble with any of them....luck of the draw I guess. You mentioned you didn't get the auction sheet (understandable since you bought it from a dealer, not auction), but I always try and get hold of that because they are pretty thorough. I've imported 2x R grade vehicles over the years and both were fine, repairs in Japan are pretty thorough compared to here in Oz.
    • BTW I measured the jack I have, it is 70mm at the saddle but you only have about 700 until it returns to 150mm high at the cylinder so it is good but no magic bullet.
    • My experience with Rising Sun Exports Before agreeing to the sale I tried to do as much research as I could (obviously), his Facebook reviews are 98% and he goes Live at least once or twice a week. I contacted 2 people in the UK who had used him for their imports, both had positive feedback. His explanation and talk through of the import process was thorough, answering any query no matter how stupid it was. It felt as soon as the money was sent, communication dropped off. I asked for shipping updates every 2 weeks or so, not wanting to pester him, he never had any updates. I wasn't informed the car had been dropped off at the port, I only found out by his Facebook story. I asked for the photos taken at the port, knowing he would need some for insurance purposes. I received a few 5 second clips and that's it. When asked again, he said his staff had them. Weeks later I asked again, he tells me he doesn't have any, but does have 50 photos from the original advert. I never received them. I eventually got the documents sent via WhatsApp after I mentioned the port was requesting them. I purchased a CarVX report, to find out the vehicle is a Grade R with recorded accident damage, first recorded in 2017 when it was first auctioned. He never told me the grade, then again I didn't ask. His response was "Grade R means nothing, it wasn't chassis damage". Still, I would have liked to have been informed about it. Jon prides himself on being open and honest when it comes to inspecting cars, it's his main job doing so at the auctions for customers. When the vehicle arrived in the UK I noticed a few little cosmetic issues. It's a 21 year old car so it wasn't going to be mint condition. The side skirts are cracked on each corner and the sealant is failing. The front grill on the bonnet/hood isn't secured very well, mounting studs are missing. Both minor things, but again, it would have been nice to be told. During a Facebook Live walk around video of the vehicle, he mentioned it has a front Whiteline anti roll bar/sway bar. While on the inspection ramp, I noticed the stock item has been installed. When first questioned, his response was "the ARB? Switched? Since when, it never had them". Since sending video and photo evidence I've not received a response. I'm probably being over critical of the overall condition of an old car, but all I wanted was honesty (which he claims to have). I'm aware I wasn't his only customer, he's busy doing XYZ but other reviews praise him for great communication with regular updates and photos, I felt I didn't receive the same treatment.
