Exhaust Manifold Leak?

Hey all, Just looking for abit of advice on what could be wrong with my car..

First of all i had a exhaust leak about a month or so back.. and we pin'ed it to being the manifold.. So i replaced the manifold gasket and turbo to manifold gasket.. then finally got it all back together.. and it was fine, working sweet ( for about 2 weeks ).. only problem then was.. i had lost power.. but we found that out to be the boost controller.. so stuck a new one on.. put it back up to 13psi.. Drove around pretty hard for about 2 hours or so.. and then noticed a real loud noise.. the same noise as a screamer pipe/external waste gate basicly but loseing alot of power though it.. So i thought it must be the nuts on the manifold need re-tightning.. so took it all appart today.. and they are still tight as they where when we put the manifold back on.. So now, im stuck for ideas.. Does anyone have any idea what could be wrong?

Thanks in advance.

Did you replace the manifold studs... because i pray you did, they should always be replaced when doing the manifold gasket or they are likely to break again somewhere down the line. Have a look and see if one has broken and the gasket blown out.

also check the dump gasket is there also, could be either or

I replaced 6 out of 8 studs for new ones.. and yes the gaskets are genuine Nissan ones.. Also.. one of the bolts just snapped that leads the cooler piping in to the turbo.. there's 2 long bolts and a short one.. The short one is the one that broke.. Anyone no where i can get a new one of them? :S

Any reason why you didn't replace all the studs?

If you are chasing replacement bolts and the like, give Just Jap in Sydney a call, they will have or can get what you are after.

i had a odd problem, loosely related that fkn did my head in for like 3 days. Had exhaust leak, i was certain it was T3 flange gasket from manifold to turbo so i pulled it all off...put it all back together using all genuine nissan gaskets, new nuts etc...started the car..same leak. I could feel the exhaust gas coming from the same spot, now i was sure i did everything right but went over it again and pulled everything apart as i did the previous time, gaskets were all fine. No sign of a leak except for the bearing had black exhaust marks all over it. Put everything back together...same leak so now im pulling my hair out. Then i noticed a bolt just holding in the thread of the exhaust housing of the turbo...somehow it had worked its way loose and it was coming straight out of the compressor housing onto the turbo centre..lucky i found it coz i was ready to incinerate the car...was so unnoticeable just by sheer chance i saw it...

Sorry thought id share that heh..

    • This is the famous "why is there a stud that stops me putting the rear wheel on the front?" question. There is no functional difference except for the tyre size. Nissan put a little stud onto the rear wheel so you couldn't put the fatty on the front, is all. Stud is easily removed, problem goes away.
    • Trust me mate, you've got way more important things in your life to spend your time thinking about.  Both rims are 18x8 with 30 offset. Put some tyres on and forget about it.
    • No scam Murray"...........so why are the wheel rims stamped rear or front? the owner's manual refers to different tyre sizes front to rear but doesn't explain anything about rim differences.
    • Cars all over the world are frequently having the wheels rotated front to back to even out tyre wear. I'm thinking a front rim and rear rim is something like a right handed and left handed screwdriver.  You didn't have to measure your rims, they are both 18 inches rims, 8 inches wide with a 30 offset. What were you measuring when you were trying to find discrepancies between the rims? Looks like the only thing you need to sort out is a matching set of rubber for them.  But if this was just a troll post, good job mate you got me.
    • Been doing some part collecting  first we have the oil pump blank because of the external pump the engine will now have  new set of cam gears from prp, my old ones were fine but I like the locking system prp have come up with on their versions  new timing belt, tensioner, idler, washer and crank gear  brand new rear main seal housing just because  and all new seals from nitto (they came in the full gasket kit)
