What Car Should I Buy?

Recommended Posts

Hey guys. I'm back from overseas and it looks like i'll be in Australia for a while and I need a car that has the following qualities:

- Sex appeal / class

- Performance (preferably turbo, I cant really do slow anymore)

- Handling

- Luxury and comfort is a bonus

Cars I have owned that I enjoyed previously:

- silvia sr20det man

- 32 gtr (performance, handling)

- '07 mazda3 maxx (looks, economic performance, handling)

So my budget ranges anywhere from $10k to $40k, i'm keeping an open mind, I want something that I can fall in love with

Heres some of the cars i'm considering:

- 2000 S15 JDM Silvia for $25k

- '94 r32 gtr v-spec II for 19.8k (Again)

- '97 r33 gtr for $23k

- something new and possibly a convertible? anything sexy

- perhaps a bmw/audi ?

Suggestions welcome!

As I said in the Daily Telegraph, my R34 GT-R was purchased in '06 for $54,800.

And I'm still receiving offers for greater than $50K 3 yrs later. An XR6T can't depreciate like that!

A XR6T can do respectable times in a straight line. But then most drivers' roads like Macquarie Pass have TURNS!

All 180 of them up to the pie shop.

So can I ask you this;

Do you want to arrive at the pie shop for lunch feeling

i) sick? or...

ii) excited?

My advice is to try them. Nothing I say is going to give you the real feeling!!!!!!!!!!!!

So today I test drove:

Mitsubishi lancer evolution X

Subaru WRX

and

the Ford G6E Turbo

The evolution and the rexy felt pretty soft, and where great cars but just didnt have the rush that the G6E Turbo had. It looks like i'm crossing over to the darkside boys!

The G6E has AMAZING torque, 530Nm, the 4 litre 6cyl turbo helps. it is very comfortable and luxurious, idles quietly and has the balls to the wall acceleration when you need it.

it feels like fords take on a skyline wrapped in leather. Obviously wont do corners as well as the rest, but it just feels like a superior car.

Sorry to dissapoint the rest of you but the bum in the drivers seat doesnt lie

+1 for the Aristo, 2JZ with leather and a sunroof!

What about some form of a Stagea, leather and all that stuff. Dunno what an Autech 260RS is going for (gotta be in your price range!) but thats gotta' be an awesome ride.

Another vote for the Y34 Cedric too, very cool.

Or what about a V35 Skyline?

these posts are f**king stupid, buy what the f**k u want.

i would go the exo x i drove one recently and thouroughly enjoyed it.

:D

The evo was nice, a beautiful steer.. but 0-400m in 14.5 seconds stock simply isnt acceptable for a $60,000 dedicated performance car

I'd love the new GTR but i've decided no matter which way i dice it i cant justify spending the money.

Guys i love your ideas, but I've decided that I want to buy a NEW, DEALER DELIVERED car to apply for the 30% government rebate for business owners

As for everything sitting around the luxury car tax threshold, my choice seems limited to:

ford g6e turbo

subaru wrx / sti

mitsi evo x

I am not prepared to get into a holden ss due to the crappy interior and not as great fuel economy. Since being a skyline owner i'm addicted to boost, and the inline 4 litre six this local australian company produce is exceptional

so far the ford is the reining champion. stock it beats all these cars..

anything i'm forgetting?

I can't speak for the Evo X, but I know past Evo's were very, very restricted stock. A turbo back exhaust and a reflash would easily put you into the 12's.

If you wanted a dealer delivered car to get your government tax break, why on earth come on a forum dedicated to grey imports to ask!? If you want to obviously drive it hard, why are you worried about fuel economy? Your post seems illogical (as is asking for advice on buying a car with your money on a public forum lol).

FG Falcons have the sex appeal of Micheal Jackson btw.

Did you drive these cars around any bends or did you just mash them in a straight line?

Enjoy your ridiculous depreciation.

when i test drove the evo x i hammered the f**k out of it.

the guy that i test drove it with was a big fan of evos (he obviously works for mitsubishi and has been driving them for the last 6 years) he drove it around first and was doing double the posted speed limit.....through hard corners.

the evo x handles better than any other car ive driven including wrx, gtrs all silvias etc, minimal mods would be requrired to make it go a lil faster. a nice exhaust and a hard piping kit will have it going extremely well.

try putting a ford turbo through corners the same way u do the evo and u will probably lose control (definately)

    • Can't forget them. Have spent the better part of the last 2 years in Bunbury. Any longer and I would have to get one of each.
    • Hit it hard last night, was in the shed till 2:30am. Had to get everything ready to try fit engine today as neighbour is going away tomorrow. This happenned today      Was going smoothly, till it wasn't. Had to lower the sway bar, remove engine mounts to get the engine to its spot and then refit everything. Head drain also created some clearance issues but got there in the end. Some idiot put the drain return on the sump virtually where the engine mount is. Hose fits on but is less than ideal, going to have to revisit it and fit a 90° fitting. Had some hiccups last night too with getting the flywheel and gearbox on. Firstly forgot the sandwich plate, so had to remove clutch and flywheel again. Then gearbox went on smoothly but then realised new block has an alignment dowel in the same spot as gearbox. GB off again to remove said dowel. Cnut. Anyway, it's in now. AC and PS pumps refitted, tail shaft bolted up as well. Left to do is reconnect all harnesses and plugs. Looks like a big mess ATM. Fit dump pipe, radiator, shifter, intake piping and associated bits, air box fill, afluids and hopefully fire it up. Looks like couriers please has lost my break in oil again. Useless pricks. Looks like I'll just get whatever mineral oil is on special at super shit auto. Hopefully it will actually run after all this or I'm going to burn it, lol.
    • The genuine ones are a minimum of $95 each on amayama. Jesse Streeter just quoted me $190 each. I can get a set of 6 MSD for $470 on ebay.
    • You forgot jet ski's and neck tatts.
    • New Monroe OESpectrum shocks for the Honda have been ordered, the car actually handles well with the OEM shocks, but from pulling the wheels off for a good inspection of the brakes and bushings, the only issue I saw was that it still has the original shocks, and with 160k km on them they are well past their use by date Also, in other "kids these days" news, the airbox resonator is "in the bin", a little more induction noise down low free reving, but it sounds really good (growly) over 4k RPM on the road, worth while silly mod for 10 minutes of work and zero dollars Also the K&N filter for the OEM airbox arrived, whilst I didn't get it for performance, as it probably doesn't give any, it's more to save a few bucks replacing OEM filters every service, 3 filter changes and it has paid for itself I also picked up another 5 litres of HPR5 for another oil filter and some more engine flush, I'll give the last HPR5 and filter change 1k km to do it's thing then flush it all out again and stick the new stuff in, anal, but I feel it's always worth the effort when I get a "new old" car to really clean out its guts, and as the K series engines have a few internal mesh filter screens for the V-Tec thingie, as well as the usual one on the oil intake tube, it's preventative maintenance to keep the oily bits happy when I'm wringing it's neck The Bogan Cruise Ship might even come out from undercover this weekend for a cruise, weather permitting of course
