Holset Hx35w Installation In Standard Low Mount Position

I have a little more space for my install as my rb30 is now in a nissan laurel as I crashed my skyline at christmas while mapping it.

The spacer I am making is being made out of 40mm thick flat, so it should be strong enough.

I used to have a cefiro, I loved the suspension set up and the wheel base, those cars are made for sliding.

got a bit more done tonight. the dump pipe is 1/2 made. I ended up using 20 60deg mandrel bends joined and pointing ditectly towards the cat. i ran out of straight pipe so i will get some tomorrow and finish the dump pipe. the hotside will then be complete.

On the cold side I wanted to keep it looking as stock as possible but have had some more fitment issues :D ... the elbow that would normally come off the compressor housing (going to the intercooler) needs to be made up as the turbo does not come with one and there is only 2.5 inches of clearance. and the pipe diameter is ..... 2.5 inches!!!! so there is going to have to be some clever welding done..

the airbox will still fit JUST and i want to retain it, plus all the stock piping, bov, carbon canster, breather the whole lot.

it would be a whole lot easier to ditch the stock stuff and start from scratch but I really want to keep it looking stock for obvious reasons. I am going to make brackets to fit the standard heatshield over the turbo.

Well the turbo is now on and mostly finished...

the intake piping was a nightmare to make and i can not fit the stock blowoff valve anymore because the intake piping sits 17mm higher, this combined with the rb30det 38mm does not give enough clearance.

I also kinda screwed up where the o2 sensor plug location was welded in teh dump pipe and it fouls the air con drain hose. but it is all in and running.

I have not tuned it yet but it sounds SO HORN! nice deep exhaust note and the intake noise sounds like a jet coming onto boost.

I am running around 10psi and have not revved it over 5g.. i stopped when the 255 semis let go in 3rd in a straight line. the car sounds insane, I cant wait to finish off a few little things and tune it,

I have some 700cc injectors going in and a Z32 afm. I am pretty sure it will pull over 300rwkw but dont want to push it that hard so will limit the power to there.

anything more and i will need new bottom end, clutch, fuel pump, gearbox and $$$ and 300 is enough for any road driven car.

I will post up some photos tomorrow.

just let me add, putting one of these turbos in a low mount position is not a bolt on proposition, every single connection from the engine to the turbo had to be modified extensively. it took me about 20 hours of labor all up and the results look like they are going fantastic,

there is no lag, i am not sure when full boost comes on but its really good.

Glad to hear your happy with it so far. Did you remove the "silencer ring" from the intake? That really makes the sound bad ass when it spools. Sounds like a city bus going up a hill, but with a whole lot more wastegate and exhaust note :( I can't wait to see you put it on an aussie dyno and see what kind of spool time and hp figures you get.

Also, keep in mind these turbos don't even come close to their efficiency range until over 25+psi, so if you impressed with the power now, wait until you crank it up.

I left the ring in place as the car is supposed to be a "no attention car" but the spool still sounds cool, even when just cruising a light app of the throttle produces a very loud SSSHHHHHHHHHHOOOOw chhhh chhhh chhhh. it sounds awsome!

and yeah, i have the compressor map for mine and did some rough calcs. it is the bigger compressor and should make 300rwkw by 20psi and full boost around 3600. but there will be enough flow for 200rwkw at only 10psi and they will be reached by less than 3000rpm on the 30det.

Back in the garage to finish off the install now and take some photos.

well the install is finished now and here are some pics.

I still have to make some changes. the intake pipe from the turbo to the intercooler has to be remade as the clamp blows off under boost because i cut the pipe too short. I also forgot to tughten up 1 hosr clamp on my front oil drain from the head and it blew oil all over the engine bay so a good clean will be needed. apart from that its all done. the car was making 250rwkw before and would be making well in excess of that but do not know untill i get the tune done, probably about 3 weeks away from now.

liike i said before apart from the blue ghey silicone hoses it looks nearly dead stock, the airbox is off in the photos so you can better see everythng.

also don't mind the oil all over the engine and the cam breather dodgyness... mew ones going no shortly...

hehe its pretty cool to pop the bonnet and see an engine that looks stock that is capable of making 300rwkw!

Well I decided I would put it on the dyno this afternoon for a quick check to see if it would be ok to drive it like it is untill I get it properly tuned with the bigger injectors and afm...

1st run - 10psi all good, very rich (9.8:1)and pulled a lazy 246rwkw

2nd run - 15 psi I was a bit nervous and did not mean to up the boost that much! 288rwkw WTF!!! jeebus! this was my power goal

3rd run - 17 psi too lean (12.7:1) just after peak torque and it spiked sharply so boost control needs to be sorted out but it pulled 311rwkw

no wonder it felt fast...

You should have seen heard the amount of exhaust gas flow on the 3rd run it sounded like a big dirty jet!!

boost comes on progressive and hits 17 psi at 3400 rpm but it feels like its on full boost from about 3000.

I suspect even more boost will nett no more gain due to the stock manifold. and i don't want any more power than this. I drove it down the road just after the last run on the same boost and it was to brutal... absolutely brutal...

so I will swap in the bigger injectors and tidy up the tune as the current fuel curve looks like a stock market chart. also there is a fairly big hole in the midrange due to the timing map needing to be totally redone but the turbo has prooved itself...

I suspect the turbo I have needs the oil seals done, either that or the oil drain is not big enough for the turbo as its smoky on start up and occasionally when you back off after full boost. but a turbo repair kit for one of these is only $100 :thumbsup:

the dyno sheet was BUTT UGLY due to the afr's and timing map so i didn't bother with it but the numbers are great! the dyno operator was fkn impressed, he looked under the bonnet and shook his head and said " looks like stock, goes like a velvet sledgehammer"

I had a laugh and decided I would call it just that

"the velvet sledgehammer" Wooo Hooo!!!

adriano, the turbo was bought off ebay, the seller had it advertised as holst lol!!

I had been looking for one for a while and spotted this. it sold for $150 i could not believe it... I was expecting to pay $600 for one from the US. but i guess it was because the title was wrong and no one else saw it. I was lucky. I bought this one months ago.

If I was after one now I would be looking at truck wreckers that specialise in IVECO, Cummins and Scania.

mine is actually has a 10cm^ rear housing and came from a Iveco 6 litre straight 6 diesel. the wastegatte pressure was set to 25psi.

What injectors is it running now? Just the stockers till you put the 700's in?

currently it has 370cc's in there and a whole lot of rail pressure to push those numbers.

i wouldn't recommend it to anyone. and would never drive it like this on the road. the pressure is now back at 45psi and boost is back to 10 psi.

I am about to remove the caps from a set of rb25det injectors and see if the flow spray pattern and flow rate is good enough. there are little caps sopt welded to the end of most sidefeed nissan injectors ans if the caps are removed there is just 1 large pintle just like rb20 and 26 injectors. this increases the flow to approd double, depending on which injector you start with. for an rb25det i have been told between 700 and 810cc

they could also be a bastard to tune with.

I have access to a CNC machine so with a couple of careful hours i should be able to remove the caps. i will then put them on a flow bench and see what they turn out like.

I may just ruin a perfectly good set of injectors but it will be interesting to see if they work as people claim. there are business doing this ecxact modification and charging almost $600 for a set.

hey nic dont detroy them, just use a jet drill in the 4 spray holes. It is common (duetshwerks etc) we do quite alot of them and the spray pattern is excellent, find some jet drills (done by hand) if not pm me and i will send you to someone who can do it for you, if not we do them 70ea exchange (cause we balance them up and adjust spray pattern, not just drill them :ermm: ) for 740cc or 550cc.

Not possible!! Your laggy, old tech, bush bearing, diesel turbo can't spool that well and make that kind of power!! It doesn't even cost $2000!! No way!! :P

So, ummm, when do I get to say I told you so to all the nay sayers??? :D O yeah, and get that boost up into the mid 20's. You won't be sorry!!
