R33 Gtr - Nismo Gear Knob - Doesnt Fit Flush!

Recommended Posts

hi all,

a few months ago i bought a nismo gear knob for my car, but never kept it on there purely due to aesthetics!

its an r33 GTR, the gear knob is brand new and genuine nismo but it doesnt fit flush like it does on a 350z or a v35. (see pic)

when its on, you can still see part of the silver gear shaft / pole (if thats what its called?) underneath it. the knob doesnt cover all of it like the standard gear knob does.

has anyone else installed one of these in their car? is there a way of getting a shorter gear shaft / pole so you dont see the ugly silver bit!? is this a quick job? i'll be taking it to a mechanic to be done if it is possible.

any info or advice would be appreciated.

thanks!

I had a similar problem with my 33 and a nismo gear knob. Found the easiest fix it to cut a 3/4'' long piece of garden hose, force that down over the gear stick so the top of the boot is level with the last thread on the gear stick, then screw the knob on. should give it enough height to sit flush to the underside of the gear knob once on

i did something similar to above but instead i did it whilst the nismo knob was on and used blue tack to make it sit flush.

theres like this wedge thing inside the top of the gearboot which you need to make it sit higher to make it flush

heres example on my dildo knob which sits higher then the nismo knob which you'll see the gearboot is flush

Didn't get a chance to edit, but you remove the boot an plastic surround then put the hose on the gear stick. Just helps to hold the rubber collar in the boot a little higher.

I just wrapped a length of electrical tap around the shaft (about 2mm below where the knob finishes) to thicken up the shaft. When done force gear stick surround up and over the electrical tape and it just sits there all perfect :bunny:

You're in Sydney? Should join SAUNSW.

The best way IMO to fix this is to get a cable tie on the underside of the leather at the top of the shaft, tie it up from underneath the leather boot (means taking off some trim for a minute or two) :)

Depends which size you bought, on the packaging it should say either 10mm or 12mm.

10mm knobs are for 5MT cars - R32s, R33s and R34 GT-ts

12mm knobs are for 5MT cars - R34 GTR's S15's

Hope that helps

ps. cool car! i think im a R33 GTR convert in terms of GTRs
