Ecu Options

Hi, I own a Nissan Stagea 1998 series 2 triptronic (formerly owned by my bf who is a forum member but doesnt have net access atm). My ECU is on serious way out and I need a new one.

I was wondering if anyone had an suggestions of what I should get? I have been told with the triptronic it makes it harder to get a suitable replacement.

What problems are you actually experiencing?

I can only think of one other forum member who's had a crook ECU in an S2.

Allstar Tuning has said it was an ECU problem. Randomly I have had problems while I am driving and I accelerate there will be no power or it will backfire. The last time it happened it was while I was driving 60kms on the intercity bypass and had the fun experience of trying to getting off the road at a slow crawl. Ive had my car towed twice to Allstar and they haven’t been able to find a problem until now.

could be spark/coilpack problem. is this not common in RBs? id be checking plugs and replacing them, then trying coil packs before i replace an ECU. alco check the ignitor

There are some wreckers in Qld that have S2's in stock - so if you need to try a different ECU, then it shouldn't be outrageously difficult.

BUT

I'd certainly consider a bit of a search here for further information on the problem, and see if there isn't another, cheaper answer.

umm, sounds a bit odd.

perhaps the ECU needs to be removed and re-plugged back in assuming that a pin might be making a faulty contact.

beyond that there is another issue. for a workshop unplugging and replugging an ECU should be a 5min job. for a newbie it should be a 6min job.

what mods have been done to the car? ie boost control etc?

Try pulling the plug out of the ecu and looking at the contacts and if they look OK put the plug back firmly and do up the bolt. While you are there write down the numbers on the ecu and post them up for us to see. Maybe a Brisbane member with an S2 will trial swap the ecu or at least point you to an RB savvy workshop.

It is unusual for the ecu to pack up but if that is the problem the only other member to need a S2 ecu couldn't find one so ended up paying $2500 for a Vipec which you probably don't want to do right now. So check out everything else but post up the part number for the ecu so that we can keep an eye out for one in the meantime.

NissWreck (www.nisswreck.com.au) in South Australia have a yellow 1999 S2 Stagea due to arrive at the end of June, not sure if they will seperate the ECU but it could be worth a try! Give them a call.

ECU problem is quite rare. Its easy to blame because of its complexity but quite rare to have a problem. like ZEI201 i would first swap out plugs to a copper equivalent say ngk bkr6e/bcpr6e one has longer thread than the other by 2.5mm anyway.... ignition breakdown under load/boost is common and would suggest coil problem. general bad running would suggest airflow meter problem usually plug connection. A loose intake hose or air leak after the air flow meter (AFM) would cause similiar symptoms. Does this workshop deal with these sorts of cars a bit?

Thanks for your replies. I called my mechanic (Allstar Brendale) and they confirmed it was 100% the ECU as with the coil packs my car would have just cut out, where as my car cuts out and cuts back in. Such a shame it wasnt my sparks or coil pack. They have tried a R34 manual ECU in and it works perfectly. Currently we are waiting to hear back from their jap contact and hopefully we will be able to get answer soon and I can save money as the est is $1500 from them.

not really, coilpacks can be affected by heat, and if the temps are changing enough, they will cut in and out. plus its a sign that they ARE beginning to fail.

if they swapped it out for a working ECU and its perfect, then yes. change it. but $1500 for a standard ECU?? youre getting ripped off unless its a power fc with installation and tuning

this is speculation, but a lot of mechanics view imports as bad. little do they realise that they are still just a car. they hear the word import, then triple the price to fix it.

straight out my list saves you $500

but gives you a fresh secondhand ecu from japan, delivered within a fortnight

also gives you brand new working coilpacks and good copper sparkplugs/oil.

fresh service, will feel good, an hour on the dyno will make her feel great.

Id even suggest using an adjustable fuel pressure regulator $180 del

a safc-II secondhand $220 del, then some dynotuning

that will spend all of the $1500 but the car will feel and perform better than ever.

:)

now go back to the mechanic and tell him to do the following for $1500 supply & tune

* Splitfire coilpacks $500 new

* bcpre6 spark plugs $20 new

* nismo adjustable fpr $180 delivered new

* 300v motul 10/40 5L oil $130 incl ryco 201 fuel filter & ryco z145a oil filter

* safc-II $250 secondhand

* service fee, labour, dynotune time $200
