Racepace Built R34 Gtr Nur Rb28 V-cam

Recommended Posts

The CE28's look the best I reckon... LMGT4's are definitely cool though... tough choice hey!... top shelf parts selection and you got it built at the right place... now stop holding out on us, we want to see the dyno chart!

Agreed the CE28's are my favorite wheel. :domokun:

A Power FC retune yielded a slight increase in maximum power output, possibly due to larger intercooler:

I will keep this thread alive by updating periodically

Hi,

Just wondering, this power was achieved on standard injectors or?

What boost pressure did was it on?

Beautiful 34 you got there, keep up the good work.

Cheers

Hi Grant,

The power output was achieved with standard fuel pump; standard camshafts; and standard injectors. Its surprising sometimes how good the factory stock parts work.

The boost pressure was about 1.3 bar, with NO electronic boost controller, just HKS actuators and a factory solenoid with a bung in one of the hoses.

I guess that is Racepace tuning philopsophy - keep it simple and achieve maximum result! (BTW I have no affiliation or financial interest with Racepace.)

Cheers

Matt

Thank you for all comments and encouragement!

Better do something bout those brakes. Look a little small behind those rims.

Since someone mentioned brakes, below is a detailed pictorial of the AP Racing 6 pot front; 4 pot rear Formula Big Brake kit.

Stupid qestion one for the day:

What is V-cam?

V Cam = HKS variable cam on intake side for RBs

Aaron34 Posted Today, 12:01 PM

Hey, you should have just bought my car instead and saved yourself a fortune... What exhaust are you putting on it now if the RPM single is coming off?

Hey Aaron,

It would have definitely been alot easier just to buy your car, but then I miss out on all the fun and excitement of building my own car to my own specs.

In terms of cost, it ended up almost the same as the 'trade in' price you wanted for your car at that time

One of my friends is interested in building a RB28 GTR, so I will try and convince him to look at your car if its still for sale!

As for the exhaust, I had one made similar to what Ben has in his R33

Extract from HKS European website:

Using variable valve timing technology, V Cam System evolves the RB26 engine to a new level. HKS V Cam System for RB26 addresses the issue of low-mid rpm torque whilst allowing the engine to continue producing power at high RPM.

Features:

The intake cam side of the RB26DETT is changed to allow variable valve timing. The Cam used has a duration of 248° which can seem a little conservative. However with the variable timing, power increases can be found at low or high RPM

Whether you are looking to find some time on the circuit through improve acceleration out of lower speed corners, or simply want something which can overtake with ease on the street, the HKS V Cam System provides good power from low RPM reducing the necessity for excessive gear changes. This especially noticeable when going from vacuum to boost to give the feeling of increased displacement.

Improved valve timing will allow for more complete combustion leading to improved fuel economy and cleaner exhaust emissions.

HKS V CAM System is available in 2 versions. Type A, which can be fitted to a standard engine (Valve timing adjustment 30°) and Type B, which can benefit from further valve timing adjustment (50°) through the use of HKS Pistons.

Type A was chosen as car is intended to be street orientated.

Hey Matt

Did you import the V Cam kit yourself or did you buy it from an HKS dealer here. The reason why I ask is if you bought it from o/s, you're going to have a tough time getting it tuned properly in this country as HKS will not supply the software to tune the kit unless you bought it through an Australian authorised dealer. Someone I know went and bought his kit o/s, got it installed through Bel Garage but could not get the software to tune the damn thing.

So just be wary of that.

Either you haven't got your labour bill yet, or the parts you bought are hot. At my advertised price of 89K, I'm not sure how you could build up one of these including the car purchase price. I know mine has over 100K spent on it then there was the price I paid for the car itself...

I'd love to get around to putting the variable cam set into mine one day. Its already insanely torquey with the 2860 -5s and the 2.8 HKS step2 kit.. (plus all the other top secret stuff of course) I'm still running the standard intercooler and plenum. I see you changed both of those... Is your's running yet? I heard it might be..

Hi mxfly,

I had this discussion with Racepace prior to ordering the V Cam and Ben guaranteed 100% that he will be able to integrate it with the Power FC with no software of hardware technical problems, and guess what... the man delivered! I privately imported the HKS V Cam direct from Japan. I managed to find a copy of the installation and software set up manuals in English which helped a lot.

two_evil Posted Today, 07:02 PM

yeah exactly i think you need to use a hks f con v pro to use the v-cam. other wise u can't tune it. sucks ass. i think you might be able to haltech to control not 100% sure

Hi two_evil,

I was a bit sceptical at first whether the V Cam will be compatiable with the Power FC, but the result has proven that it works very well. I was told that the Valcon does not talk to the Power FC at all, it merely acts as a piggy back computer changing the Cam angle according to engine speed in rpms.

Initially I was going to buy the HKS f con v pro, but the cost is prohibitive and HKS will not sell you one unless you purchase direct from the Australian distributor and on top of that, no one can tune a F Con except the distributor in Sydney.

I took a bit of a gamble to outlay the cash for all this V Cam stuff when I only had one man's word that he can make it work. It just shows how much I trust my workshop.

Hi Aaron,

Your car now at $89k is an absolute bargain for what you get! Back then when I inquired you about it, you were a lot firmer with the price.

LOL regarding the 'hot' parts.... I actually have good contacts which allowed me to get exceptional deals on JDM car parts, besdies the Aussie dollar at the time was in my favour. I must admit the labour cost was the killer. Don't forget your car has fully tuned suspension, drivetrain etc. which my car does not.

The car is running well, I will post dyno graph soon.

I hear it is awesome. We should meet up and swap some knowledge. I'd love to suss out the VCam and I'd be happy to take you over the rest of my car and where all the time and money has gone...

Beno knows how to hit the bullseye with all of it now, but it took time. The 33 is a totally different chassis. Great thing with Beno is you feed back the cars behaviour and how you want it to behave and after an exchange of time and money, you get exactly what you want. I don't know anyone else that can do that as well.

I've only put about 3000 ks on mine in the last 20 months, basically since the build. Damn waste. Winton in a couple of weeks should be a good test for it...

Hey Aaron,

The issue I have now is that the car is too fast for me to handle safely, I get scared when I go full throttle. :)

I wish I had driving skills like yourself, Chris and Jack.

I need to learn how to drive the car! Definitely catch up.

Cheers

Matt

    • I run 2 x 525 pumps on factory 8mm fuel lines     ... zero issues, staged of course    Your setup should work fine, all you need to do is find the restriction. A good aftermarket fuel regulator is always a good idea too. If it's not your regulator i'd be suspicious of your fuel tank breather and your tank pressurising. Next would be something with the fuel hat. Then blow out the fuel lines.
    • Update time...... Been a crazy busy time and a bit of a change here. Sold my 370z Nismo as wasn't using it much and wanting a 86/brz so wife can have some fun at the track again also to help with funding the s15 build.  As said last time booked a cruise to NZ. The place is great, drank lots of craft beer, eat food and visited some amazing places   The plains of rohan Before we left I finally got an electrician booked and the shed now has power. Been so good being able to use it at night and not running things off a 20m extension lead. Got stuck in last weekend and reorganised it and cleaned up a lot of stuff. A few more things to tidy over time but really good to work on now. There's 13x 10a GPO, 3x 15a GPO, 4 high bay lights and 5 LED batons so will never have an issue seeing or powering tools. 437344198_7178721088892834_15829362501196293_n.mp4   Work has restarted on the s15. Removed the rear cradle so could pull the fuel tank and finish emptying the stale e85 thats now been sitting for almost 4 years 🤮 Cleaned it out and let it dry. Removed the old lift pump and have reinstalled a new lower pressure pierburg pump with all new hose and lowered the pump to get it nice and low in the sump of the tank. Also got a an old diff cover cleaned up, work has a soda blaster so made quick work of it. Going to put a 4.11 ratio diff in with a fresh rebuild thats been reshimmed for now before buying a good diff centre. And had a big change with going back to full time work. Opportunity came up to apply for a race mechanic job so applied and got it, been some big days so far but definitely enjoying it and getting to work on some cool stuff and with some great equipment. Learning a lot on proper car setup and suspension so will be valuable for the s15. I'll be part of the travelling team form next round too. This weekend will get the fuel tank and system in, need to buy a rollover valve and mount that. Get cradle in with the diff and axles then make a shopping list to buy to finish that off then start looking at cooling setup and plan intercooler pipe routing. Work will definitely be slow now on the car but will be to a higher standard.  The 180sx hasn't sold so may be heading out to Morgan Park labour day weekend for a charity event to have some fun been almost 6 months since I've driven it so will be take time to get comfortable again.
    • I'll rent a fuel pressure tester soon and report back.
    • It has a separate fused 10ga wire running from the battery to the relay in the trunk. 10ga on the ground also.
    • Actually I did the fuel pump rewire 2 days after the issues started. Grinded away the paint and grounded it to the chassis behind the right panel in the trunk.
