I don't know the theory behind thermostats. Sure, a nismo one opens earlier, but how can that have any effect on the overall temp of the system when running hot? An open thermostat is an open thermostat.

Sure, more coolant is better, but if it's not cooling in the radiator, then it's just a matter of time till you have twice as much coolant at a hot temp to cool down, which is twice as hard!

Not so much about cooling from a certain temp, but if you have a thermostat that opens earlier, then it is easier for the cooling system to maintain the lower temp as opposed to one that opens 10 degrees higher which has to work harder to bring the temps back down that extra 10 degrees.

Similar, but reversed, to boiling water - much easier and quicker to bring hot water to the boil than cold water

My understanding is that a thermostat that opens earlier will ensure the car takes longer to reach operating temperature, thereby running richer for longer.

It's a bit of a trade off really, it would be better on long hot drives but if you do lots of short runs your fuel economy will most likely go out the window.

I could be wrong, it's happened once before.... whistling.gif

Just a quick thread bump.

I've just had my top tank go on my radiator. Are there any direct swaps readily available? I need to get my car fixed fairly quickly so I was hoping to buy local here in W.A.

If not, is this a straight swap? http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/RADIATOR-NISSAN-SKYLINE-V35-AUTO-MANUAL-2001-2007-KOYO-BRAND-NEW-/220872242160?pt=AU_Car_Parts_Accessories&hash=item336d02f3f0#ht_1906wt_1163

Pretty sure thats what Jase has in his, and it required a fair bit of cutting to fit.

Heard that about the 2.5L versions Iain, but are the cores the same size?

BTW what's this 'ours' buddy? :nyaanyaa: Already looking at upgrading to a PM35?

I have the full alloy Koyo 36mm radiator. Needed a bit of trimming here and there but nothing that I'd consider major.

Absolute max I've seen is 108deg on a 40deg day, stuck in traffic for about 10 minutes. Pretty rare to go over 102deg, only ever happens on a hot day after I give it some and then get caught at lights or something. Usually when I check the Informeter it it's sitting around 93-98deg.

Hi all,

Sorry to bump an old thread but I'm needing a replacement after splitting the top tank. Are these eBay radiators okay? I haven't been able to find a genuine Koyo in Australia other than JustJap but they only have the S2.

Contact Scotty at Scotty Customs or Fernix radiator.

I believe Scotty help them developed a direct replacement for the M35 and not just direct fit but it's thicker too. I have one in my car.

Yeah although they still had the VQ25 in S2. Apparently VQ25 S1 and VQ30 are same radiator (with the mounting points on the outer-most edges), slightly different to VQ35 and S2 VQ25 (ditched the viscous fan for electric).

So, still haven't sorted this yet haha. Probably organising to get one through my local Natrad since they can get Koyo's.

I have 2 questions though. My stock radiator is only 16mm thick. I was probably gonna go up to 26mm but will this affect clearance for A/C condensor and A/C fan? I've got room at the back with the shroud and clutch fan but slightly concerned about the front even though it may only be about 5mm difference (if they keep the core centred).

And, was probably going to get some silicone radiator hoses, are 350Z/VQ35DE the same? It looks like they are but just wanted confirmation.

I've got the coolant bypass mod from Scotty so just trying to piece everything together ready to go all at once.

Pretty sure the one from Fernix are 26mm and we don't have any issues with clearance.

Yeah Scotty referred me to Fenix as well but I'm being stubborn and doubting fitment due to core width. Fenix NZ lists what appears to be more suitable for S1: http://www.fenixautoparts.co.nz/index.php?route=product/product&product_id=693

I took mine out on the weekend but hadn't measured it up yet. Was just going to try get a Koyo through Natrad.

    • Timing map only tells part of the story, I've seen a few cars where the CAS has been adjusted so you might see 12 at the ECU but at the motor you could be seeing 8 kind of thing. A S15 I converted from PowerFC to Nistune had just that, CAS was turned back to have less timing than the ignition map itself lol... "Choonered".
    • But your running 1.6 bar of boost, is it still 12 degrees of timing at 1.6 bar of boost? Also, is there e85 fuel at the petrol stations in Dubai?
    • swaybar swaybar swaybar swaybar swaybar anyway OP, what is currently in your car, are they factory shocks and sway bar? Any sign anything else has been changed under there over the years? And as Murray said....what are effect you looking to change
    • Congratulations on your find  Did you mean it has 6k miles or was that a typo? Firstly, keep in mind some movement of the shifter is normal...it is a long rod hanging out of a box bolted to the engine. Having said that there are 2 next places to look: 1. Transmission and engine mounts. If these are worn or broken the shifter will move around more. They are reasonably easy to source and replace on a hoist, and possible but uncomfortable to replace car stands 2. On the bottom of the shifter there is a nylon cup that sits over shifter's ball end. If this is worn or broken the shifter will move around more than it should (but will still shift OK). That is a cheap part and requires removal of centre console, rubber shifter hole covers and a circlip in the gearbox shifter hole to remove the shifter. Re maintenance, as with any new import you should change all the fluids including transmission when you get it; never trust the seller and previous owners to have done the right thing. I am pretty sure R34 GTT is the same as earlier big box transmissions, so use any good quality GL4 75w90 trans fluid if it is shifting well (if it is hard to shift due to synchro wear, redline shockproof lightweight will keep it alive a bit longer before rebuild is required)
