I though tit was really good advice. The amount of aftermarket products that I've tested over the years that can't compete with factory components makes me very wary when selecting aftermrket parts.

HAHA lets go then. No one knows everything about everything I'm a DIESEL MECHANIC not light vehicle i dont play with cars all day and want info so i dont f**k up?? sound legit. as if people dont modify stuff for looks why the f**k do people buy rims for????? light weight my ass!!! i know what traction control does sort of explains itself in the name or did you have trouble understanding it the first time? it doesnt exactly have TRACTION CONTROL written on it and like i said im used to controlling fuel not air ( diesel not petrol ). I still go back to my point. Why critisise me wanting information cos after all i thought thats what this forum was all about. you seem to be one of the idiots from boostcruising do you not have anything better to do then scan forums for people that dont "know" as much as you do and put condescending comments on their topic. seriously take a look at yourself and grow up.

Item 1: "ok just had a good long squiz under the bonnet and ive decided to throw away the stock manifold cos it just looks too messy"

Diddums. Your engine bay is too messy.

Item 2: "Here's my tip. Don't start deciding to throw shit away before you understand what it does."

It's possible to be both condescending and helpful. You decided to throw all that stuff away, THEN asked how/why/what the TCS butterfly was. The correct approach is to find out what it is, what it does and what the consequences are before deciding to bin it.

Item 3: "heres my tip champ. if you dont have anything interesting to say stay quiet. I'm trying to learn and when I do i will help others. If your fighting the system what are you doin on this forum????"

"Champ" is more condescending than what I wrote. Ignoring the spelling and grammatical errors, who was fighting what system exactly? And what wasn't interesting about what I wrote?

Item 4: "as if people dont modify stuff for looks why the f**k do people buy rims for????? light weight my ass!!!"

Ah, but you see, I am one of those people. The only reason I bought the rims I bought was because they were the size I wanted to run the tyres I wanted, and they were very light (and exceedingly good value too). They look good. They don't look anywhere near as good as a whole bunch of other wheels that I might like. But I didn't buy the better looking wheels, because they didn't fit the most important criterion, which is functionality. Just because other people (apparently including yourself) make mods just for appearance doesn't mean that it is sensible. It might be worth doing just for the aesthetics if aesthetics are important to you, but only if it doesn't negatively affect functionality. Oh, and by the way, Greddy etc front facing plenums do have some negative effects.

Granted, you are going to use a PowerFC and so traction control becomes something less important anyway, but there is a separate traction control system in the car that you will have to deal with if you start pitching components from it.

How do you know what gets posted on Boostcruising? Are you a member there? I'm certainly not. Actually I had to go check, in case I had signed up to use the classifieds. Anyway, I don't know what goes on on Boostcruising from direct experience, because I'm not one of those wankers. Are you?

Now, I apologise for being condescending. But not for being right. I'm transplanting a Neo into my R32. I spent months doing my own research into all the things that would need to be done, and working out what were the best options, including for all my non-essential other mods I planned to do at the same time (building a special diff*, total HICAS delete, sorting out the possible engine management problems - or at least putting a plan in place to deal with the possibles that were sufficiently unknowable that they might still affect my conversion - such as the speedo not sending the right signal to the ECU). All without asking a single question on a forum. Sure, I have a couple of other people I can talk things through with face to face, to get information and choose between options, and decide what can be left to someone else to worry about. But then, doesn't everybody? You're a mechanic. Are you telling me you don't know any mechanics who work at performance shops? Hell, my mechanic is a diesel mechanic. He spent 10 years working for a city council doing their heavy vehicle maintenance. And all that time he was also building twin cam Celicas and off-tits Hemi 6s and Peugot motors. I thought that's what mechanics did with their spare time.

* I ended up asking a question on this forum about the diff after work started, because there was a nasty surprise. But I didn't get a directly helpful response and had to find the solution outside of forum-space anyway. So I don't think it counts.

God I warned you. Before you come back with a stupid answer atleast have some info to back up the case. Just keep the stock set up. Buy injectors, turbo, manifold and ecu and enjoy it. My biggest regret with my last build was a changed things even tho they where working for the just incase side of things now I'm thinking I'll fix it when it breaks heaps better idea. When you go making 400 kw then start changing things like manifold to help up top it's a street car not a race car.

  • 2 weeks later...

sorry for the late reply. and let me just start by saying WOW. Lol. im very appreciative of your effort that you have put into that reply.

item 1: i saw the traction control motor but wasn't sure what is was and im struggling to understand why that is such a noob mistake and in the end i did figure it out. i hadnt thrown it away by that stage either its not as if i jumped into the deep end and then started asking questions im doing my research which has been met with some "interesting" advice to say the least. yes you have the info but the way you bring it across is not the friendliest. in terms of the engine bay looking messy it is extremely busy under there and if the trade of between the engine looking neat and tidy for a bit of driveability im prepared to make that sacrifice.

champ is the ultimate condescending comment i know was fighting fire with fire and it obviously worked. and in terms of interesting you didnt really you said a couple of words and then criticised me for trying to figure out a few things???

i applaud you for being practical there are too many "lookers" and no "go'ers" but not everyone is like you and me personally i want a clean looking car is that so bad??

haha boostcruising is the land of fights, shit talk and biggest dick contests and thats where my post was heading and didnt want it to get to that so im glad i've openned your eyes to a forum that is useless and full of people busy with putting down the less knowledgable.

like i said before i have come to realise that you are most probably right but i didnt have a roblem with that in the first case. I havnt had the luxury of being able to do major modifications to my car cos ive only ever had the daily and there is only so much you can do in one night without walking to work in the morning. In terms of other mechanics in my situation ive just moved to perth and the only guys at my work a V8 only so they are of no help to me.

usually by this point i wouldn't humour you with a response but i wanted a bit of closure to all this bickering

update ive bought myself a camry to daily drive while i take the 34 apart. ive gone with the aftermarket manifold and a z32. i was also thinking of running an external oil cooler and ditch the stock one any have any info on this?

I wouldn't put an oil cooler on the car until you prove that you need it. Fit an oil temperature gauge and see if you have any trouble keeping it cool. If not, then do not. Saves weight and leak possibilities. I have thought of fittting one myself, but my car simply doesn't cop a hiding in a way that makes the oil get hot. When I am driving it hard, it's in the hills at night and so there's not too much trouble keeping it all cool. Industrial park burnout/drift sessions are not my scene, and I don't have the time to thrash it on the track. It's hard enough to get home (from overseas) long enough to drive it at all at the moment!

cheers

yeh ive been looking at it and im goin to wait for my manifold to rock up before i make the decision was only going to do it cos i want to delete the stock one but we'll see.... yeh i would prob just drive mine on the weekends and i dont drift or track just drags every now and then.

Where the filter screws on that housing is actually the cooler has coolant lines goin through it can't really see it with the manifold on...

What stock oil cooler are you referring to.

We have the same car pretty sure the only stock cooler I have is for power steering .

Oh cool

Well I have an external cooler not fitted yet,And as it stands normal driving and a bit of fun see's temps of 90 - 95

But when your on it like track/race conditions i have seen it at 110But I'm sure once I start attacking more and stop being a b word temps will still go north.

This is the reason why I went for the external option.

    • perhaps i should have mentioned, I plugged the unit in before i handed over to the electronics repair shop to see what damaged had been caused and the unit worked (ac controls, rear demister etc) bar the lights behind the lcd. i would assume that the diode was only to control lighting and didnt harm anything else i got the unit back from the electronics repair shop and all is well (to a point). The lights are back on and ac controls are working. im still paranoid as i beleive the repairer just put in any zener diode he could find and admitted asking chatgpt if its compatible   i do however have another issue... sometimes when i turn the ignition on, the climate control unit now goes through a diagnostics procedure which normally occurs when you disconnect and reconnect but this may be due to the below   to top everything off, and feel free to shoot me as im just about to do it myself anyway, while i was checking the newly repaired board by plugging in the climate control unit bare without the housing, i believe i may have shorted it on the headunit surround. Climate control unit still works but now the keyless entry doesnt work along with the dome light not turning on when you open the door. to add to this tricky situation, when you start the car and remove the key ( i have a turbo timer so car remains on) the keyless entry works. the dome light also works when you switch to the on position. fuses were checked and all ok ive deduced that the short somehow has messed with the smart entry control module as that is what controls the keyless entry and dome light on door opening   you guys wouldnt happen to have any experience with that topic lmao... im only laughing as its all i can do right now my self diagnosed adhd always gets me in a situation as i have no patience and want to get everything done in shortest amount of time as possible often ignoring crucial steps such as disconnecting battery when stuffing around with electronics or even placing a simple rag over the metallic headunit surround when placing a live pcb board on top of it   FML
    • Bit of a pity we don't have good images of the back/front of the PCB ~ that said, I found a YT vid of a teardown to replace dicky clock switches, and got enough of a glimpse to realize this PCB is the front-end to a connected to what I'll call PCBA, and as such this is all digital on this PCB..ergo, battery voltage probably doesn't make an appearance here ; that is, I'd expect them to do something on PCBA wrt power conditioning for the adjustment/display/switch PCB.... ....given what's transpired..ie; some permutation of 12vdc on a 5vdc with or without correct polarity...would explain why the zener said "no" and exploded. The transistor Q5 (M33) is likely to be a digital switching transistor...that is, package has builtin bias resistors to ensure it saturates as soon as base threshold voltage is reached (minimal rise/fall time)....and wrt the question 'what else could've fried?' ....well, I know there's an MCU on this board (display, I/O at a guess), and you hope they isolated it from this scenario...I got my crayons out, it looks a bit like this...   ...not a lot to see, or rather, everything you'd like to see disappears down a via to the other side...base drive for the transistor comes from somewhere else, what this transistor is switching is somewhere else...but the zener circuit is exclusive to all this ~ it's providing a set voltage (current limited by the 1K3 resistor R19)...and disappears somewhere else down the via I marked V out ; if the errant voltage 'jumped' the diode in the millisecond before it exploded, whatever that V out via feeds may have seen a spike... ....I'll just imagine that Q5 was switched off at the time, thus no damage should've been done....but whatever that zener feeds has to be checked... • I think Fitmit had some, have a look on there (theyre Australian as well)
    • Hah, fair enough! But if you learn with this one you can drive any other OEM manual. No modern luxury features like auto rev-matching or hillstart assist to give you a false sense of confidence. And a heavy car with not that much torque so it stalls easily.
