Bakemono Nissan S15 - Build Thread!

Recommended Posts

  • 2 months later...

cylinder head is re-assembled with all the fruit. still a lot to do but getting closer & closer.

assembly was done with parallel strips as its more precise than the factory recommended dial gauge method. engine builder commented naprecs machining is some of the best he's ever seen, and this guy has built plenty of 1000hp+ drag motors. Tolerances are all to within 1 thou which is magic, to put in perspective how tight it is, factory is 10 thou.

All that head work to run a GT series? Put an EFR 7163 on there and really enjoy it ;)

Shame you can only like something once. Next size up for sure. 7670/1.05 ?

Haven't read this thread for a while but I thought he didn't want big power. But yes if it was me I would have absolutely gone a 7670 or something with Twinscroll mani. Especially because he has kept VCT!

Caught up on thread, some cool stuff and some odd choices.

  • Amazing head.
  • Effort and attention to detail is good to see.
  • Went to the trouble of buying new manifold, but open scroll and putting GT series turbo on the side of amazing head with VCT??
  • Shitful spot for an oil cooler, you've got all your hot air feeding from one core to the next to the next. Intercooler/AC/Oil/Radiator.

How much power do you want? This guys head is far less fancy and the car makes good power, but it has a decent manifold and turbo set up on it.

Also, I would like to turn that into a track car :D

Dan, going back a year ago I had a certain S15 owner with a Mazworx SR23VET talk me out of going an EFR7064 1.05A/R TS, claiming the rear housing is too big & they're completely overhyped. Following his turbo advice is how I wound up with a 3071R aka 2835 Pro S & open scroll. After going for a ride in Piggaz BCNR33 with an EFR, I realise now the bloke has absolutely no idea what he's talking about. Do we all occasionally receive a bit of misinformed advice along the course of a build.... I think most of us do. Oh well.

Anyway - the car will still be a complete farkin fruitcake to drive.... the turbo will perform its just not the best turbo out there...

Happy to sacrifice a little bit of performance with the oil cooler, I didn't put it at the front wheels as S15's sit bloody low to the ground & I really don't wanna risk ripping the thing out if I ever come off at the track.

Time for an update....

Shit just got real, Emtron KV8 is paid for so is the S15 to KV8 adaptor harness. No haltech on this build....

Braided turbo lines are all done. Ended up going with 45 °  fittings for the coolant from the block, not enough room for a straight or a 90 °

Compression ratio without the squish pads & with 0.06mm skimmed off the head is 8.3:1 - which for me is exactly what I was hoping for on the stock bottom end.

Aluminium fabrication is underway, intercooler pipe from passenger guard to the turbo is all done, so are the brackets to mount up the radiator breather tank & radiator overflow tank. Also, dimensions for the custom oil catch can & power steering resovoir are done & will be mounted close to strut tower on passenger side.

Have been waiting on a K&N air filter from SummitRacing for over 4 weeks now - its out of stock at K&N...must be cause it has a fancy carbon fibre housing. This is delaying the fabbing of the intake pipe. GRR.

Exhaust fab will be underway soon as well.... will be 3.5" from the turboback with the gate plumbed back into the dump pipe. SMB oval muffler at the rear to keep things looking neat. Will be spiced up with a dumpy tip ; )

Not even gonna bother with 98 anymore - now manning up and going E85 flex life - currently speccing up the fuel system with Paul & Scott so it'll be complete madness. Woohoo

Yeah we all get some bum advice along the way, but you are still early enough in your build to make that change.

Says me, the man with -9s on the GT-R and a new Kinugawa GTX sitting on the shelf for the Silvia ;)

Honestly, I don't really care what you do with the turbo, but you should definitely move that oil cooler. I've mounted ripple strips and come off track and never had an issue with my cooler in the wheel well, you would need to have a very decent off to damage it, big enough to cause suspension damage so your day would be over anyway.

Wouldn't be as big a deal on a pure street car, but you are sacrificing a chunk of cooling capacity that will be compounded as both systems are affected.

Big $$ fuel system in progress, f**k it....the list gets bigger.

Goin all out. 5 litre SP1200 surge tank ordered.

Radium fuel rail on its way from USA, -8AN spec... for -8AN goodness. No -6AN shit in this fuel system.

Lots more stuff to order will keep y'all posted.

lol whats 8 months, we all know the build is now well & truly out of control... i'm slashing seconds off my lap time and im not even driving.....

the way i think of it is....it's getting a hamburger with the lot when it comes to the ecu treatment, not to mention the engine / fuel system will be sensored up to the shit. its been off the road 2 years now so waiting a bit longer doesn't really phase me. Just about every single part on the car has been replaced with brand new.... i have complete confidence it'll be a turn key, road registered race car.

plenty of GTR owners will be begging for mercy as I pass them full noise sideways through 3rd gear sweepers, snapping into 4th spitting flames.... this silvia will be a complete, wild hog.

Once the stock box blows up will go down the path of a Quaife 6 Spd sequential. In the meantime, I need to sort out brakes...what are the biggest puppies that can fit under 17x9+22 TE37SL's?

Nice gear! Surge tank is porn.

"plenty of GTR owners will be begging for mercy as I pass them full noise sideways through 3rd gear sweepers, snapping into 4th spitting flames"

Maybe basic bolt on GT-Rs? Anything with the same level of mods as your car, when it's finished, wouldn't be giving any f**ks about a SR powered Silvia with an old GT turbo lol

What are you gonna do when you finally buy your GT-R and you get chopped by absolutely everything all the time and everywhere 0_0

Dan, let's be for real, there's no catching a full works 300kw+ Silvia on anything other than a GP circuit...

I don't care how much power the GT-R has, it's physics. 300kw is serious shit in a car that weighs 400kg less

I'm not biased at all either, I love both!

Your head looks amazing, very nicely done!

I am in the market for head work myself.

How did you go dealing with Naprec?
Was it difficult to get what you wanted, due to the language barrier?

Seems risky from an outsiders perspective I guess, being so far away from the machinist and not being able to see/talk/discuss as readily as with local shops... happy to be proven wrong however.

Aaron,

From initial contact to finish the headwork took a little over 3 months, which is bloody fast.

I shipped my original head over to them the thing was in fantastic condition when we pulled it down.. however, another option is to buy new in Japan and get it shipped direct to your tuning shop of choice.

Overall, I exchanged close to 40 emails when it came to speccing up the head. The porting & polishing was all done by hand & there were a LOT of hours involved. My engine builder has commented that the portwork is some of the best he's seen and the reality is that the head flows big numbers....so we're all interested to see how it'll perform on the dyno given there's a LOT of headroom left in the setup.

Minoru at Naprec can speak basic english, so this helps. However, when it came to detailed questions and requests - I did get help translating with Japanese where required. Most big name workshops in Japan will send their heads to NAPREC - they are literally king when it comes to machining & headwork. Was a pleasure to deal with them.....
