Jacob's R33 Gtst S2

Hi All,

New-ish to the forum – A couple of months ago a good friend of mine bought an R32 GTST Type-M. I instantly fell in love then started looking around at different turbo cars, potential, cost and repairs etc.

This led me to a lot of informative posts on SAU and through that I was set. I wanted a Skyline. I decided that I would like an R32 but they are a bit old and they have no airbags (not that I don’t love them!). The other option was an R33 S2, dual airbags, big, cheap, safe, fast.. You get the idea.

After a bit of looking and a couple of disappointments I found one that looked promising. The only issue was that for the price it wouldn’t last long and it was raining outside so I wouldn’t get a great look at it.

We went to look at it anyway and spent about 2 hours on the wet ground crawling around looking for issues. I found a few small things that needed to be done but it could not be beaten for the price. Two big pain points and requirements the car had to meet were P/S and A/C this had both J

Modifications:
Blitz SE Return Flow Intercooler
Nistune ECU
3” turbo back exhaust to Lukey muffler – Muffler has twin 6cm tips which give it a nice sound without looking OTT
Pedders Extreme Coilovers
Dyno tuned (I believe by “Toshi” on here???)
Splitfire coilpacks
10 pound wastegate spring

It has all the supporting mods to get me more power but I’m happy for now.

List of to do items:

Rocker cover gaskets - ORDERED
Power steering hose replacements (leaks a bit from the top)
Brakes need a service
Oil Change
Coolant Change
New Drivers seat – PICKING UP LATER THIS WEEK
Stereo (undecided on this yet)
Clean small patch of surface rust from boot – THIS WEEKEND
Reseal tail lights
Climate control LED mod
Polish headlights – THIS WEEKEND
Detail engine bay and car
Respray bumpers and bonnet (if they really bother me which they don’t really at the moment)
Fix third brake light (I believe it’s an LED setup?)
Map lights at the windscreen don’t work so troubleshoot that
Clean ACC Valve (Idle valve) as it seems to be fluctuating ever so slightly which is a bit annoying but I’ll live.
Lubricate mirrors, they work fine but are a bit rough
New rims and tires
Shift boot/Ebrake boot – ORDERED
C Spanners for coilovers
Coolant flush/fill
Most importantly, Drive the car!

I have some questions about the car as I’m a noob but I will Google them first and if I don’t find the answer I’ll ask on here.

I haven't posted here in ages because I didnt think it got approved.

I've tried to whip up a list of what I have done since owning the car but I'm sure I have missed some things. I'll post pictures when I get home because I'm at work now.

  • Caster arm change
  • New rims (XXR 527s)
  • Transmission mount - Not yet installed
  • Reverse light switch - Not yet installed
  • Shift bushing - Not yet installed
  • Radiator bushings - Not yet installed
  • New/Used fan clutch
  • 3” turbo back exhaust to Lukey muffler – Replaced by JJR Turboback now
  • Rocker cover gaskets - Done
  • Brakes need a service - Done
  • Oil Change
  • Coolant Change
  • Stereo – Done
  • Polish headlights – Done and sealant used (12mth life)
  • Detail engine bay and car - Done
  • Map lights – Found issue to be globe placement
  • Clean ACC Valve – Cleaned but still fluctuates sadly
  • Lubricate mirrors, they work fine but are a bit rough – Mirror ended up not working so I repaired this
  • Shift boot/Ebrake boot – Done
  • Apexi AVCR installed
  • Triple gauges installed (Coolant, Oil and boost)
  • Removed Turbo Timer
  • Fixed alarm

Haven't posted here for a while but my car is off the road for another three months so I'll be doing some work to it.

New & Genuine Z32 AFM - Already delivered

Hypergear ATR45SAT - Ordered

Nismo 740CC Injectors - To be ordered when tax comes in

AFR Gauge (AEM UEGO?) - To be ordered when tax comes in

Scottys custom intake - To be ordered next fortnight

Custom intercooler pipes if I need

JEM Tune and fit of random parts

For those keen readers, there is an RC battery charger in the background, I have an offroad RC buggy we take out often.

Turbo is due tomorrow or the next day then I'll order an NPC clutch, injectors, intake and a few other shiny bits soon.

I'm having trouble getting hold of someone from NPC to assist with my clutch decision but no one is getting back to me... Their service seems pretty bad.

I've also hit up Kudos for some other shiny bits and waiting for a response.

Intake, Plumback BOV and E85 line comes on Monday

90 Degree reducer for the turbo comes tomorrow or Friday

Turbo comes Friday, Monday or Tuesday

Flywheel bolts, fork boot, alignment tool, TB Gasket, Manifold stud kit (I've done this once before but didn't have the right washers/yolks) and gearbox seal kit comes Tomorrow of Friday.

Clutch alignment tool - MIA Kudos forgot to deliver by the looks of it?

Manifold stud, yolk and nut (deez nuts) set - The back story to this is that when I purchased the car, it had 4 snapped studs and so quite a few yolks were missing. While I have the turbo off, I thought it might be worth changing the nuts and yolks to the correct items. Manifold studs will be saved for another venture.

My planned end date for this is the 10th of November - I would like to have it tuned etc before this date

I have Wednesday next week off so expect some action shots coming

Thinking of going NPC Cushioned Button clutch, Redline Lightweight Shockproof, GKTECH slave etc etc etc

A plan I had recently was to make a plug which means I can quickly change between Z32 and the standard AFM when it goes to JEM for tuning. On end will be the standard wiring and the other which connects to the R33 AFM will be as normal but I'll have a conversion one that connects to the Z32 AFM also. I'll do a diagram/pics when I'm ready.

Re the AFM plug, I've done my stagea the same way. Just splice the Z32 plug into the existing loom and keep the existing plug instead of cutting and replacing. with a PFC it is literally as easy as unplugging one, plugging in the other, and changing the setting in PFC.

That's an even better idea, I don't know why I didn't think of that. I've been looking at how to do it for Nistunes and it looks to difficult that I thought I better just leave it to JEM to do

I did have an issue where the seat belt clippy thingies were wrong between the two sets, I just unbolted and swapped them out.

Selling the old seats for a case of beer tomorrow

I used this as a chance to thoroughly clean the interior

I tossed up between doing the manifold yolks and nuts tonight but I can't be bothered. I think I'll just do it all when the turbo arrives.

About three months ago I resealed and rust proofed my whole boot using some different tips from others on here. Doesn't leak one but now!

I'm ordering some interior screws this week so I can put the boot back together after I change the fuel pump and do the relay upgrade.

I'll be ordering my new clutch from Garage 7 on Wednesday next week also.

So I removed my turbo heat shield a while back because there was something rattling around in it. Today I drilled out the spot welds and found what the cause was....

The BOV gasket was in there, I have NFI how the previous owner managed that.

There was also a massive exhaust leak which I fixed shortly after owning the car.

Booked in my tune with JEM for about two months from now which gives me heaps of time to get all the work I need to get done sorted.

I agreed that they will do the tune, AFM and the Injectors for me. I've left a bit in the kitty to cover me for any custom work I want them to do or any "Fix Ups"

I started doing my fuel pump rewire tonight but am yet to finish as I need to do the pump change at the same time..

Finished the wiring for the new pump tonight. It needs to be tidied up a bit but it works, looks reasonably neat etc etc etc

Anyway, Tomorrow I'll get neck deep in fuel (30L or so) and swap out the fuel pump.

After seeing some information in another post it looks like I'll have to alter this relay setup. The relay won't be happy with the power its getting so I may have to run a solid state relay to energize the coil of the pump relay which I installed. That or bypass the standard ECU control altogether which I really don't want to do.

Finished off my fuel pump work tonight The pump wasn't that hard to do at all. I struggled with the stupid collar more than anything. I also took some more pictures of the turbo below.

Not a lot of people are commenting here but I think it's worthwhile to keep some sort of online log about my car.
