Help Us Build An Sr20det

good morning all,

i understand this is not the usual RB question but i value the opinions of people on here more than some other forums, my questions are in some ways general, so if you can help i always appreciate it.

Ok so to give you the back ground, a mate has come to me with the fun idea of buying a 1600 datto as a sunny day daily/ weekend street car.

after looking at some engine options we seem to have landed on an SR20det.

originally thinking 2jz rb25 or even an rb30/26 we released that its just not going to fit "easily" and we don't really want to have relocated radiators or custom fabrication.
at this point i should mention were keen to take a mostly "do it yourself learning curve" approach with the engine build. we will be seeking paid professional help for the fiddly stuff or things we can easily botch but its going to stay relatively un-ground breaking and simple.

the plans are

datto 1600
rebuilt s15 gearbox *internals built to handle whatever power we end up going for*

s15 SR20det *vct*

were hoping for as much horsepower we can drive on the street without being stupid with lag.
were aiming for 300 RWKW

we need input on what to use to achieve this such as cams and turbos ect. we are not turbo specialists and dont know our way around the models.
what would you recommend?

our brief so far:

- Nitto 2.2 stroker kit

- Forged internals
- rebuilt head ported and polished
- decent sized turbo

- cams to match
- E85
- haltech management (tuned by a professional.... not us knuckleheads)

what turbo/ cams would you recommend?
what head work will we need to look at for a high boost sr
will we need to have the block sleeved for strength?

keep in mind if we could make it 400rwkw on the street without too much dramas we would.
also keep in mind its going in a datto :P

money will not be tight but were estimating a $15k engine?

we are not set in our ways with any of this *apart from the 1600 datto* so if there is a much better path to take please suggest it.

Pending what size turbo you stick on it, it's sounding much closer to 400 than equal or less than 300kw.

What is the actual aim of the car? Drag street circuit etc

If I was going for a street car 300kw is well enough for a datto shell, keeping in mind they are so light.

The s15 box is the weakest of the s chassis, so option is convert a RB Z32 box, or be careful with a s14 and it will be ok.

For 300, I wouldn't even bother building an engine. Stock bottom end will be fine, but if your much over that get some better head studs. Don't rev it much over 7500, and don't bash the limiter, cool it properly and it'll be a happy reliable engine.

tbh we started off looking at a 600kw+ engine but with the size limitations of the engine bay we dialed it back. if this is the case we will probably dial it back up.

so perhaps a 400rwkw target is more appropriate?

the car will be street driven mainly but its being built as a toy plain and simple, to keep forever and fulfill his silly want for a silly datsun mainly.
it will see a drag strip but only for fun.

we thought the s15 box as the engine will be s15 bits, its probably going to become a strengthened dog box but if there are easy better options then we will take them.
what sort of turbo will get good power without being undrivable? and what sort of cams should we start researching?

A 9 sec s13 package I know of is...

VE Head, EFR8374, 6 boob mani, good plenum, standard crank with good rods and slugs

C4 auto with a big stall.

Drives the kids to school and runs 9s on 17" drag radials

I've been invited to input my recommendations by Po. After owning and doing developments on SRs:

My S14 currently runs a set of BC Step 2 264/12 cams, they make better power on less boost compare to Step 1 256, and not as laggy as the 272s.

For internally gated I personally use and recommend our ATR28SS-2 This turbocharger. It maxed at 307rwkws on 24psi, on Pump 98 fuel, 20psi @ 4100RPM. Excellent street performance turbo that bolts on factory manifold, dump, water, and oil lines (S14 benjo fittings).

For external I recommend our SL20.5 in 8cm turbine. Just had a recent customer made 357rwkws on E85 fuel at 24psi. Red top SR with no VCT full boost by 4400RPM, Which would be around 4000RPM with VCT engaged.

400rwkws+ on SR is a long shot, For the best response for engine capacity I recommend our ATR45SAT turbocharger.

For high boost, you will need valve springs. The whole packing on mine including:

BC S2 cams

JE pistons +.5 over sized pistons

Tomei Multi layer steel HG

Eagle Rods

BC valve springs (recommend Tomei on this item, BC springs are too hard for VCT, you will be replacing it regularly).

Rocket arm stoppers

Genuine Bearings, water pumps, gaskets, bits n pieces.

Parts and labor came to 6.5G. Which isn't too bad. Built by Forced motorworks.

It is in a test car that gets threshed very hard on dyno on weekly bases. It has been trouble free.

hopefully we can get a cheap one with a blown headgasket or something, even if its complete and we can sell off random bits like manifolds/turbos stock parts ect.

bestpart of this little buy is that it came with a shit load of spares including the front chrome work with headlights, sss dash and other fun bits.
for the heck of it gonna sse it we can get it started and registered.

(10 years off the road)

added: also a plazman intake plenum apparently which was random as hell but very cool.

it seems motivation has kicked in and the wallet has been opened. probably prior to the require knowledge but hey...

it seems he is headstrong and set on getting a garret, unsure of which garret, with garret in mind, what should we be looking at for the compressor do you think?
and yes we are sticking to a 2.2 stoker which im happy about.

also, is there a difference in blocks between the sr20det stuff, as in s13-15.

the primera block is obviously not to be used as its fwd and there are no bell housings to suit, the head is all we will realistically take from it.
if it makes no difference i guess we could pick up an s13 block for.. well f**k all really, IF there is no real differences?

I don't think there are differences in the blocks, just in what goes in them. Some changes to the timing chain guides I think. Just make sure you get a DET for the piston oil squirters, as NA motors didn't have them I think. Best talk to a motor builder and start to make plans and involved them.

This is happening shortly. i believe he has lined one up, don't remember his name but he separated from DATSPORT to work on his own business.

PN-Mad, cool thanks, do a cheap S13/14 det block would be the easy cheap way then.

don't worry, were not going completely blind. i just like to get as much outside impartial input. which again im always appreciative for.

Bloody hell

Old mate is cracking on with things!

A GTX3071 would be a lot more responsive, and land you in the mid to high 300s on e85. Just a thought on the other side of the 400kw barrier.
