Angryrb's Project Series 1

Recommended Posts

After not driving my skyline for a year, probably more i happened to have the opportunity to buy this series 1 R33 from family so missing driving and liking this series 1 i snapped it up..

I've been in and around this car for years and envied it cause to me it just looks hot and has always performed well, 13 second flat quarters with what most say is a shitty HKS 2540 turbo which surged its head off when the cat was gutted..Since then the turbo was replaced with a Hypergear SS2 and still retains the original tune from Japan and everything else thats bolted/attached to it...

I'll just list what i know it has

SS2 hypergear turbo

SAFC controller

HKS boost controller

3inch exhaust system

Mines ecu i think

GTR dash

Blitz side skirts

Trial rear bar

Nismo wheels?

Koyo radiator

Exedy clutch

short shifter

So, this thread is going to be simple, currently it was at 200kw's with the 2540, the goal is to get anything north of 280kw's and see how it goes at drags and track.

Have lots of parts so stay tuned for a fairly quick build up :)

Don't know bout others, but pulling an engine out is a bit of an anxious moment, only second time i done this and bloody knock sensor played hard to get but managed to pull the connector off without an engine dropping on my arm :unsure2:

Gonna paint the middle core cause they tend to look all rusty after a short time, hoping to keep it looking this new for good...

Lucky i found these little balls that were in the comp housing, dont think the engine would of like to suck these in.. alot of these guys do a great job on things but then fail on these fine details, fabricator leaves dags that will be sucked in too so i usually take all the pipes off and sand clean them before the engine can be started...

Yeah, im not happy with the shinyness of the ceramic coated covers, i will probably end up changing them again, have to think bout will look good without being stupid...

Been a few hard slog kinda days, i removed the RB3025 from my silver skyline and now she sits in the maroon beast, was a long frustrating process, almost like it didn't want to go in, played with angles etc to get it in and bolted on the mounts..

Today i been making a few efforts to keep it going, i bolted on the manifold, a few times for various reasons, sorry but im amateur lol... finally got it on, then the air con then the power steering pump, then started putting the HKS exhaust on, dam i have to say im a big big fan of the Jap gear, many dont like it but i do... am a Jap brand whore...

I like showing pics so heres a bunch of them...

  • 1 month later...

Slow progress, waiting for the fabricator to make up an adaptor plate so i can bolt the idle air control thing to the top plenum. It should mean that i can run the neo stuff without any issue..

Have installed all the belts and radiator and decided to try and do the intercooler piping myself. My old man bought a tig welder and has offered to help with welding so this will either be a flop or work well, wont hurt to try for the little cost. I went and picked up some 2.5inch stainless pipes 316grade so we can attempt home job fabrication lol.post-70965-0-80115300-1463649258_thumb.jpg

    • Ok, so we've had some (expensive) problems but nothing critical, thankfully. I get parts from FCP Euro in the states and in this instance I got 4 x genuine BMW cooling lines and 4 x OE quality oil lines (because they had no genuine stock). Well, turns out the OE quality didn't fit and the guys wasted a lot of time with them. Thankfully FCP has lifetime returns but the genuine BMW lines locally were $250 each! They also discovered my drivers side engine mount was totally dead and the replacement mount was $350. This sucks as I almost bought new mounts when I did my FCP order and I would have had both the engine mounts for less than this local one. So, I'm assuming at least another $1500 on top of the existing number. They did reassure me that the new (used) turbos looked good which was my main worry. Car will be ready for Monday pickup.
    • Forgot to add, that excellent economy was on street tyres, normal street alignment, I recall they were Kumho KU31. Current motor, with the silly alignment and tyres would go nowhere near those numbers.
    • And also, as small as the effect may be, the larger exhaust side places a lower restriction on the exhaust flow, even when off boost. When my bigger turbo went on you could hear the difference in the exhaust note at cruise (almost everywhere actually) and fuel consumption went down a little bit.
    • I got better economy after fitting a bigger turbo (when purely highway driving, Sydney to Forster, got down to ~8.3L/100KM), as it takes more throttle and RPM to get on boost.
    • Oops. Sorry mate. It is both excellent to hear and also surprising though. The amount of work required to (effectively manually, not on a production line) build a core vs your low retail price point is why I presumed that you were buying cores. But let's also be clear about what is meant by "build". At your price point I can't see you making cores from billet on a mill, even if CNC, or doing all the machine work on a rough casting. Surely the lumps of metal are sourced more or less ready to go from an Asian supplier, right? Maybe the same with shafts. I mean, you could turn shafts up yourself, but it's pretty slow going for items that are all essentially bulk order producable. I was always perfectly willing to believe that you assemble your wheels to shafts, fit up bearings and do all the balancing. I actually expected that you would have been doing all that even if the core did arrive from a supplier with most of that pre-assembled. Nevertheless, please accept my apology.
