Gaming PC Build

Yeah, sorry bout that.  I'll put up with shit for a while but when I reach my threshold, nothing gets held back.

When someone prefaces everything with what basically amounts to "you don't know a thing" then my threshold will get reached quickly.

I was merely pointing out it doesn't make sense. You skimp out on a processor (the most important part of a computer) and throw on one of the best coolers on the market? I understand "you love your H100" but come on mate, there is no logic there. And i understand "cooling is subjective" and it would be, on a CPU that required it... But you picked a 6500. If you had picked a 6700k i would have agreed with you.

Call bullshit all you want regarding my OC. The last PC i built for myself was in late 2009, it had a I7 870 2.93Ghz in it. Now fast forward to October 29, 2013. Since then i have upgraded the Ram to go from 4GB - 16Gb and i have a new GPU the GTX 570. Significance of October 29? Battlefield 4 released. Now my problem was this game really pushed my CPU, and i was bottlenecking hard (massive framerate drops). A day Overclocking at it was up to 4.2GHZ (alas i needed a new cooler) and i used that PC until about 6 months ago and i built my new mini ITX PC. That CPU is still going strong at 4.2GHZ in a photoshop PC. So i will say again, it shows lack of knowledge. The CPU is the 1 thing you can't upgrade down the track without building basically a whole new PC. Overclocking can be very useful for getting a bit more time out of it.

Now i'm not saying the 6500 is a bad CPU, it still outperforms my old 870. But i would put it in a PC i was budgeting $1600 for... Not a $2200+ PC.

And to be honest, the 1060 is again a card for a $1600 build, not a $2200+ build. Your budgeting is out.

And then you throw a 1TB SSD in there after skimping on the most important parts? A HDD is literally the easiest thing you can add later after you fill yours.

Your money was in the wrong spots. I called you out on it, because, bad advise.

1200w power supply is way overkill, something like a 750w will be more then enough for a 6600k/6700k and a single video card.

My build makes total sense.

Your build doesn't make sense, why would you buy a Z170 motherboard? you are paying extra money for a motherboard that can overclock on a cpu that you can't overclock, if you aren't overclocking then worst case scenario a $30 cooler will be more then enough, in most cases the stock cooler is fine.

It does make sense, buy you are right.  I know I specc'ed a Z mobo but it was the best in the price range on the ones on the Centrecom custom builder site.  My opinion is around $200 is the sweet spot for mobos.

Revisiting the mobo selection I should actually have specc'ed something like this - http://www.centrecom.com.au/gigabyte-h170-gaming-3-socket-lga-1151-atx-motherboard-ddr4

You didn't call me on shit.  What you have is an opinion.  As do I.  Thing is you present your opinion as fact and declare anyone who disagrees as an idiot.  Unless you have some empirical data then don't be an ignorant flamin mongrel and actually have a discussion and present your opinion in a manner that doesn't present you as a know it all asshole.

It's not hard.

And, to reiterate, I made it quite clear there was no logic behind the cooler choice.  Not sure how many times I have to say this.  The rest of it made total sense and if you actually go back and have a look at the system you put together there is very little separating them.  You've also pulled some dollar figures out of your backside.  Glyn has said he wants to keep it under $3k.  He hasn't said he wants to spend a minimum amount.  Put your $2200+ build alongside my $1600 build and the difference will be 5/5ths of f**k all.  So why spend the extra?

And some games (mostly RTS games, like city skylines) do show noticeable increase in frame rate when going from i5 to i7 and when OCing as those games are generally more CPU bond... if all you play is FPS shooters then CPU won't make that much of a difference (even an i3-6100 still works fine on most of those type of games when paired with a med range graphics card) .

Look up on youtube, there's also some reviews that shows that certain games also befits slightly (5-10 extra fps) with faster RAM (stock 2133 vs all the way up to 3200)

And I've a high end mainstream i7 (2600k) OCed at 4.2Ghz from 5 years ago and it still handles current gen games fine (with an updated med range last gen graphics card, Geforce 970).

My default gaming rig recommendation (for someone with a decent budget) would be:

i5 6600k or i7 6700k

Big air cooler (not a fan of those basic entry level AIO water coolers)

Z170 mobo of your choice (I usually just go with a 'normal' Asus one like the Asus Z170-AR)

16 GB 3000Mhz Ram of your choice

250GB/500GB Samsung EVO 850 (best bang for buck/reliability SSD right now IMO), can upgrade to the 950pro if you want extra speed (although I personally don't find the increased speed noticable for gaming/everyday use.

Secondary 7200rpm HDD of whatever size you think you need (whatever brand you want)

Geforce 1070 Graphics card (can maintain stable 60fps on high/ultra for almost all games at 1440p resolution or getting over 100fps constantly at 1080p res), you can save quite a bit of money by ordering the card from the US and if you do that I recommend getting EVGA brand as they have intentional warranty.

~600w quality PSU or upgrade to ~850w PSU if you plan on SLIing later (I personally find it more hassle with multi-GPU setups) and 1000+W PSUs are complete waste of money IMO unless you are running tri/quad GPUs setups (which right now is not possible with the new gen Pascal Nvidia cards).

And lastly if you play a lot of fast paced shooters I would consider a 144Hz Gsync Monitor (or Freesync if you are going with an AMD card).

Hope this helps.

getting very close to a final list. thanks for all the direction along the way, i have used some but i have let the budget stay up a bit to keep my inner child happy and because im simply happy to spend the funds on it.

not surprisingly to me, im not keen on letting too much go haha, but im still under my budget and happy.

downsized the psu and ram, GPU just dropped in price which is nice, changed case due to availability issues.

stayed with the i5 6600"K" may look at overclocking i the future and i have gone the cpu watercooler to do this and just cos their easy and cheap.

i have gone for the M.2 for os and games. why the hell not. i have the mainboard to suit it, why not just give it a red hot go.

i also retain my redundancy 2X 3tb hdd in raid for the info i cant afford to loose in files.

very good pricing from UMART, i have been on the phone with them and they have been excellent. confirmed what they had, what they could get and what i would have to wait on and they had almost everything at hand. prices are great, i just pay postage and postage protection so im happy. very good company to deal with imo

Good build mate!

My only suggestion is to consider swapping the Samsung Pro M2 for one of the new Intel 1TB SSD. For not much more you can get a 1TB m2. It is slightly slower read though. I will be putting one in my Mitx build shortly.

Yup. I did have a look at this. What im planning to do, is i really wanna try the m2, in a year or two ill pop that hdd in another compuet and get a 1tb or whatever is cheap in an m.2 or similar. Their price will plummet after not too long im sure.

So, i have paid for the parts online using umarts online payment which is fine. And i have received an email saying they want a copy of my credit card and licence before sending my gear as a first time customer.... this seems very odd to me.

MWave did that to my when i bought a monitor recently. I told them to cancel the order and paid through Paypal. I don't even know if that is legal TBH.

Tell them no and see what happens.
