RB25 Turbo Lifter Repair R33

Is it difficult/expensive to fix a lifter issue on an RB25 turbo engine?

Engine is still running.

Ie does it mean the Head is probably in question and Oil Cooler/Pressure.?

Full rebuild possibly?

 

I've never rebuilt an RB25, pretty keen to learn how to rebuild RB engines in general.

 

But to know when it's worth it or not is the question/knowledge i guess.

Cams out, lifters out, disassemble/ bath/ clean according to many and various guides on the 'net, re-assemble, pre-lube, back into the engine, cams back in, cross fingers and hope it works.  Is usually how it goes.

And what if the issue was caused by oil pressure issue?
Any other things that need attention to detail?
eg oil cooler, oil pump, oil pressure stuff....

Guess it's hard to guess til it's opened up.[emoji849]

If you're saying that the engine suffered a loss of oil pressure, then your "turbo lifter repair" may actually be a repair instead of the usual "my lifters are noisy and sticky, how do I make them better" type question.  Running them at revs with not enough oil could damage them to the point where there is no repair, just replace.

What weight oil are you using and has the ticking only started recently? If there is suspicion oil pressure is low the best thing to do is put a decent oil pressure gauge in to check it.

I was looking at a car for sale seeing if it was worth the hassle to fix up.

Only info I was given:

Oil isn't milky

Car is still running but the guy insists it requires a tow away

And that the lifters require replacing.

Think it might require a reco engine or expensive.

 

Myself though Im really wanting the experience of trying to repair it myself under guidence from my mechanic. Shoulda just did an apprenticeship when I was younger i guess.

Ive worked on older simple cars like Gemini's etc so the RB25 is a huge jump.

 

Asking price is too high atm.

 

I sold my silver 97 40th anniversary rolling shell inc engine/tranny for $1800

The RB25 isn't that complicated, you should be fine if you have some sound mechanical knowledge under your belt as well as a mechanic to help out.

All you can do is throw the guy an offer with the price of a rebuild factored in and hope he has the sense to take it. He admitted it's a tow job after all.

Compression and leakdown test, rust and paint, electrical faults. A ticking engine sound may, or may not be hydraulic lifters. The comp test will give you and idea of how much abuse she has likely seen, get her hot and see if she can keep her cool. Why does it need a tow..? cost analysis...
