340whp GTX2860R GenII ??

Hi , first time post here. I have a 2.0L 8 valve SOHC motor (pinto) on E85 with 630cc injectors GT2860RS 0.86 turbo External WG (flapper welded shut) Haltech ps1000 making 301whp at 5800rpm 20psi. Power bug has bitten and I'm chasing another 40whp to hopefully crack into 11sec 1/4 mile. Because my hotside is custom it will be costly to change to T3 manifold and Vband dump etc so I've looked at the GTX gen2. It's rated at 475 crank hp, 115hp higher than the GT version. The only difference between the two is the billet compressor wheel and cover and the shaft speeds on compressor map are 35,000rpm higher.  Is it foolish to think this could make 340whp? I'm trying to decide on this or GT30 , if the GTX2860R GEN2 can do it I'll stick with it. If anyone can vouch for this turbo making those numbers please chime in . Thanks

I'm not familiar with the engine or what it can flow/handle, but the GTX gen1 or gen2 is a significant step up from the GT series. Much bigger/better compressor map suited for higher boost. If your setup can handle 20psi of a gtx28 turbine, I think you'll see a noticeable improvement.

The compressor housing is quite a step up compared to the GT in size, but looks like you've got the space for it

 

I went from GT2871 to GTX2867 gen1 years ago and very happy with the results.

Would be an interesting little package.  No desire to go with  a complete YB engine for cylinder head flow efficiency? 2 valve Pinto head would be a sticking point in chasing hp if you got really serious.

By sticking with existing manifolding / turbine / wastegate you're definitely making life easier with the change over.

Boost would be the preferred way to more hp than revving the engine harder IMO so the thinking is fairly sound if you're wanting a 40-50hp increase.  

Be interested to see the before/after results of this upgrade.

Hi Dale. A YB cosworth head would be ultimate but would've added about 7 to 8K to my build cost. In standard form the YB head doesn't flow that great so porting, bigger valves, better cams etc. The factory brake booster would have to be deleted and bias pedal box installed with remote reserviors etc.  The aluminum YB heads are also known for going  soft and cost about 3k to harden if a suss one was purchased. The going rate for a standard used YB head in GC is about 3k. I was also keen for a challenge to do something different and it's been a whole lot of fun since having it on the road. PB at the drags is 12.7 114mph so hopefully can get a high 11 with another 40hp. Thanks

With a second Bosch 044 installed the GTX2860R genII made 355whp at 26psi.  Car ran 11.7@ 121MPH a month ago :)

LOLs, its making the same as my T38 on the YB in my Cossie...i  really need a new hair dryer for the old girl.  Your setup is  bang on what I want to piece together in a MK 1 Cortina. Looks a m int intall. Did you do the abrication?

Yes turbos have come a long way since the old tech T3's and T4's. I was in disbelief at the dyno seeing the result. Super happy with it.  Thanks very much.. here's a more recent pic :) The turbo manifold & dump pipe were made by Dan @ Go Pipes and the aluminium intercooler pipes, turbo inlet & BOV return pipes by Silke Fabrications.

    • I hate to interrupt, there are enough internet rumors. I do build every single CORE in house that leaves my workshop including the one that you are using, as well as engineering work done on your turbo housings.  Reason been is I got shafted badly by a turbo joint 18 years ago when the business first started. I since trusted no one when comes to selling anything under my name, or I just don't touch them at all.
    • @MBS206 yeah it's a short run from battery in boot to pump
    • On a 20amp run, on "12V", if you're getting power for the pump direct from battery in the boot, you should be good on 12AWG. If the wiring is from up front, you want to get to a 10awg.
    • Got the speakers wired up in the doors today. I end up cutting the wire where I could access it and put new speaker wire on to run down to the crossovers and ran them to woofer and tweeter. I used the original speaker wire that went down to woofer to reuse the crimps.  Mate said he has a spot free to fab my intercooler pipes, dump and other bits and pieces on Monday so I started getting shit out and putting everything together that needs to go down with it. Got the rad in so he can fab the new top pipe to the hypertune hose as well.
