Metal intake pipe vs silicon vs rubber

Recommended Posts

Hey all, this may be a noob question but do metal turbo intake pipes give you better performance? I ask because metal can heat up very fast so the air going in would be hotter. What metal material is the best for intake? Aluminium or steel? Also would heat wrapping your metal intake pipe help with getting cooler air? Thanks

also where in Sydney can I get one made or buy one? I’m not in vic so can’t Scotty’s customs or havoc fabrications

The issue of factory rubber or silicone intake pipes is that they will collapse or fold when hot, which will limit your air intake volume.

This can be solved by making the rubber or silicone intake pipes hard, eg putting brackets inside them.

At least my tuner told me that.

As long as you are getting clean air, not from inside the engine bay, you will be fine with steel.

Maybe that gold or silver tape? Maybe?

Why, because math

Lets say 2.5 litre running at 5k rpm

2 rotations for 1 full cycle, because 4 stroke

2.5 l x 2500 = 6250 litres of air running through your intake

Or

6250/60 = 104ish litres of air per second, wow

The air really doesn't have time to heat up

Disclaimer: the efficiency is not 100% and this is based around atmospheric pressure, not boosted

While I'm doing flawed math - 104 ltrs + 15 psi is 208 ltrs a second.
