R200 vs R230 half shafts

Recommended Posts

Hi Guys,

I'd like to know if there is any difference between the 31 spline half shafts out of an R200 R33 GTR non V-spec diff and the 31 spline half shafts out of an R230 300ZX TT diff.

Are they the same length?

Are they the same width?

Are they interchangeable?

Reason I ask is I have an R200 R32 GTR 30 spline diff that in putting a Quaife LSD into and it needs 31 spline half shafts.

I dont like the idea of paying $1000 for a pair of half shafts for a GTR diff if i can get the same shafts out of 300ZX for $250.

If the R230 from the Z32 is viscous, then I would suggest that they would be different to the GTR stubs. The GTR is a mech centre and the splines will be equal length. R200 VLSDs have unequal length splines on the stubs, and whilst I don't know for sure that an R230 VLSD would also have unequal length, I would suggest it would be likely.

If the Z32 R230 is mechanical, then it really should all be swappable with the GTR one. Having said that.....the R33 GTR will have ABS stubs won't it? And the Z32 didn't have it?

No can't use, different lengths, I looked into it before I did my Quaife. You need the ones with 46 tooth speed sensor gears also, the Atessa uses this for the wheel speed too.

You should have bought a pair my shafts while I had three 31 tooth R33 sets remember ? Forget the cost, they are becoming stupid hard to source now, took me six months hence why I obtained 3 new sets when I could.

Well that answers my question :) Thank you for that.

Yeah i know i should have bought a pair of yours, but $850 is still stupid money for a pair of shafts even though it is cheaper.

But i gotta wear it now and fork out some coin.

if you can find them, the RH side 38220-24U05 is discontinued remember ? LH side 38220-24U06 is still available, but right and left are different lengths.

Try Japanese Motorsport in Adelaide, I sold my last set to them.

    • Yeah the Drift R wheels look awesome. They are pitted though, wonder if I can fix that somehow.
    • I picked up my diff today. Both their shop manager and machinist wanted to have a chat prior to me leaving. Conversation started with "Where did you buy these garbage parts? What's the name of the company?" They actually went on Speedtek's website during our conversation and made what I think is the best gear head joke I've ever heard after seeing they make straight cut gears. "They've probably only gotten away with selling straight cut gears as they'll make noise whether they're properly machined or not. People are none the wiser" The humor made the 2500$ in the hole I'm in after this whole experience a little better lol. They also pointed out that not only did they find identical issues on both ring and pinions that Speedtek had sent, but that by eye you can see the pinion teeth do not have the same profile from one end to the other.  They went on about this being the worst diff job they've ever done and how it was a colossal waist of time. Luckily after mentioning how I purchased another diff to learn how to assemble them, they were nice enough to give me a crash course on diff assembly on another diff they were currently doing. I like to tell myself they did this to be nice but deep down, I know it's to be extra certain they'll never see me there again lol.  Speedtek was pushing for a store credit but I'll never feel confident purchasing from them again due to their third world machining techniques and QC. I just asked for a full monetary refund.  I'll pop the diff back in this Friday and take it for a spin if the streets are clear of snow.
    • Hey any chance you still have this for sale or know someone that could help me out with tuning my stagea?
