Can broken rocker arms damage valve stem reals?

Recommended Posts

I'm curious if after you over rev a car and break a rocker arm, can the valve stem seal get damaged in the process, letting oil into the combustion chamber? Or can a bent valve after a broken rocker arm be bent in a way that allowed oil to pass through?

If you think about the violent thrashing of broken parts between the cam lobe and the valve while it's all flailing away at "over rev" speeds......

that makes sense, metal shards flying everywhere, scratching cam shafts lobes and stuff. Do slightly scratched camshaft lobes matter too much? or is it fine as long as  the cam lobe can spin freely without getting caught up?

1) Yes of course any damage to the cam lobe surface will cause damage/wear to all other parts it is in contact with.

2) Yes of course breaking a rocker arm can/will bend a valve stem

3) Yes of course a bent valve stem can cause a valve stem seal to leak, or crack a valve guide.

Didn't you get this car originally with a broken rocker arm?

Hey thanks for that, and yes to your question.
