My friend and I thought we'd attempt to replace the shift solenoids on my R34 tiptronic as the very common shift solenoid B fault showed up and the box was stuck in limp mode; it had originally been an intermittent issue, but eventually became permanent.
The job didn't sound or look very difficult; drain the fluid, remove the control valve and replace the shift solenoids, then bolt it back together and flush the system with new fluid. However, upon reassembly, the box would only move forward. Manual shifting up and down would work fine (unlike prior to attemped repair), but reverse, neutral and even park would attempt to move the car forward also. We assume we got something wrong, or missed a step, as neither of us have any experience with autos, and it obviously doesn't work right.
The main problem is the lack of good workshop manuals; the service manuals available only appear to have troubleshooting and service proceedures; what we need is a Haynes style manual that shows a complete pulldown proceedure, but I haven't found anything along those lines.
Has anyone got an idea of where we went wrong, we'd appreciate the assistance? We'll attempt to pull it down again over the next couple days.
