  1. i know this thread is supper old but i found out what wus happening with my tranny noises....it turns out my pilot bushing wus an automatic pilot bushing instead of a manual transmission one. it stuck out about an eight of an inch out and was supper thick meterial compared to the ones provided in clutch kits. . when i got the swap they must have had an automatic trans and switched it with a 5speed and just bolted it up and sold it as is....check your swaps when buying guys......

interresting that you say that there are pilot bearings for man and auto box's

  2. Old thread but 2 cents worth as below:

ummmm very interesting as i am suspecting the same thing with my car now (5 speed Manual 1999 C34 stagea RS4S). I only get a very nosiy werrring bearing sound sound when clutch pedel is depressed. It makes the noise if the car is moving or not. Hence it cant be gear box as the car is stationary ( not rolling or moving)??? The only thing turning is the thrust bearing or the pilot bearing !!!

The funny thing is it is a little intermittent, as sometimes it doesnt make any noise and shifting is all good. But when it does make the noise it makes the actaul gear change very notchy in all gears. ( Almost like you are trying to change gears with out uisng the clutch).

Hence i come to the conclusion that the pilot bearing is still grabbing ( Partly ceased) onto the input shaft and making the shaft turn hence gear changes are a little harder in all gears.

If it was the gear box that was damaged it would difficult to change gear all the time!!!

By the way i changed the oil in the box and still have the same issue - no rubbish came out of the old oil ( I was looking for metal as bearing might have colapsed in box but no such luck)

    Conclusion:

Looks like i will be pulling the box ( bloody heavy looking thing) out to fix a bearing that will only cost what $20

And if i get some other prick to do it then it will probably cost what $800 in labour for a box out and in job to replace the $20 pilot bearing. :domokun:

is that 2 cents worth or $820.02 worth :verymad:

  3. My 2 cents worth

I tow my Mazda Rx3 race car with my Stagea all the time ( 1999 RS4S Manual). I specifically brought the stagea to do the job becasue of the following:

Towing capablity, easly tow's down to the Phillip Island every couple of months for race meeting from melbourne. Fulling loaded with race car, spare wheels, tools, race gear, jerry cans etc...

Station wagon so i can load it up with all sort of stuff when needed.

Great for family car when dropping kids of to school ( kids love the sun roof in the back).

Go's well when you boot it and you can easly just cruise along as well.

Looks better than a Commodore or Falcon anyday for a tow car !!! :domokun:

PS: And yes i tow in 5th gear easly doing 110k's per/hr off boost and still get resonable towing ltr/ per klms but you have to realistic here and not expect to get 15ltr per/km when pulling 1.5 tonne on the back. When i want to overtake i pull out sink the boot .... she come's on boost and away we go easliy overtakes.

The Stagea is stable driving with the load but it still comes down to common sense when you load trailer on the back. You have to balance the weight on the trailer and not have it over hanging and wieghing down the back of the car. ( Again this is common sense no matter what car you are towing with when pulling large loads) !!!

 See you at the island

  4. Recommendations for smash repairs for C34 stagea's.

People who can get parts and know what they are doing.?

People who when you talk to them do say "STAGEA hummmm what is that "?

    Smash repairs who know imports?

    Any advise ?

    pitfalls?

    Dickhead's to avoid?

    SouthEast suburbs Vic.

  5. New oxy sensor installed and fuel pump ordered.... Walbro 255ltr should do the job. Should have that installed over the weekend.

Hope to get some better fuel economy with the new Oxy sensor. I have notice it was better already with nearly 200 k's of city driving already and not quite half a tank used.... So it is better than what i had previously per tank full. :woot:

  6. get this beast tuned already ron!! hahah

    Hey Andrew

It is just a matter of time... need to get fuel pump sorted plus i have another race meeting coming up and need to work on the race car as well. Plus i have plenty of job's to do at home with renovations. If i could work 24 hrs a day then I would but need to sleep at some stage. :woot:

  7. How does it sound different?

The turbo just has a different whine to it! , It sounds great and has a deeper puff when you lift off from the blow off valve. Nothing to write home about here but i could notice the difference from one turbo to the other easily.

  8. Well i be telling the truth when i say that i haven't had a chance to get it Dyno'd.... Just been to busy. racing my other car and plenty of work and home project on the go.

I have got the boost set at stock levels and it drives great.... Stagea towed my race car to the island no problem last weekend.

Also got my self some injectors and a new oxy sensor as well.

Still need to get the fuel pump as i havent had a chance to get that one sorted yet .

Then it is off to get it Dyno'd... hopefully in the next couple of weeks.

It all comes down to time.

  9. New High flow turbo went in on the weekend.. All running well now. Have to baby it until i get the pump and injectors sorted out then get it Dyno tuned.

I gave it a light load squirt around the block with no issues's.

Certainly sounds different when it spools up...but turbo still seems nice and responsive... Time will tell when i get it all dyno'd

  10. Hi lads

Confirmed it on the weekend when i pulled it out. Exhaust impeller blown to million pieces and wait for it .................. front compressor impeller blown in a million pieces as well    intercooler was full of broken bits. Cleaned everything out on the weekend with the hot high pressure spray hose at the servo.

Hence i just dropped the turbo off today to hypergear for high flow job. He is in Campbellfield.

    Link here http://www.skylinesaustralia.com/forums/topic/261613-hypergear-hiflow-service-continued/

Now i have ordered the new nissan tubo gaskits.

And i am after new fuel pump and injectors to suit the new turbo. Any suggestions... remember this is a street car.

Then off to get re-nistuned at the Dyno.

Not happy that it has happened but i am using this as a excuse to put some extra goodies into the car. Dont want to go stupid as it is still a daily driver / tow car for the race car.

Hence talking with the guy at Hypergear he advised that it will be nice and streetable with good low response but still have a good top end as well with his high flow job that he does.

  11. Can the AFM still be stuffed if it doesn't look physically damaged? And if it is stuffed then why does it idle so nicely? Surely the AFM would make it hunt or idle very poorly.

    I also have new theroy:

Blown exhaust wheel off turbo shaft... hence no real boost? Looks like i will be taking off front part of exhaust to check for rear turbine has delaminated off the shaft. if it has it will be sitting next to the CAT. :woot:

  12. Hi all

I have a issue with my stagea concerning the loss of power., possibly in some sort of LIMP mode?

    Car: Stagea C34 1999 model RS4S manual

Mods: Standard turbo, Large front mount intercooler, 12 PSI boost, POD filter & NISTUNE ECU, CAT back 3inch exhaust.. nothing over the top. She is a good tow car !!

Scenario: Driving to work the other day gave the car a boot full to get around some cars, The car during hard acceleration had a massive hesitation ( similar to bouncing off rev limiter) then backfired. I lifted off quickly and then from then on the car has had no power or even very little boost.

It will very slowing accelerate to speed and you can here it labouring ( But not missing or poping or pinging).

Car idles nicely every thing works.. no engine light ... i am also able to rev the with no load and it will rev to 6k to 7k no problem.

    No oil leaks,

No blue smoke out of the exhaust.

Engine is idling beautifully sits on 900 rpm rock solid.

everything under the bonnet looks ok.!!!!

    Things i have tried:

Did a full ECU check using the consult port and it gave me code 55 - meaning no problem found with ECU.

Disconnect battery for a couple of hrs then reconnected to no eval.

I checked all of the hose's including turbo piping to see if something is blown off.. nothing found

I checked Air flow meter for damage but nothing looks bad. I even disconnected the airflow while the motor was running and it started to hunt then die hence i am thinking air flow meter is OK.

    What to try next?

Is there a possibility of a blown turbo?

Can there be a ignition issue?

Can there be other sensors but surely that would cause the ECU to give a problem code??

    Co lapsed Cat?

    Help would be appreciated!
