That will be the problem for sure, open up the device and count how many wires are going to the pins where it connects to plug next to the fuse box. There should only be 5 wires, some of those cheap epay consult connectors have 6 wires, search consult pin-layout to find which wire needs to be sniped or unplugged. From memory mine was the blue wire, but I would recommend you use the diagram and multi-meter to be sure, or buy a PLMS cable   http://www.plmsdevelopments.com/consult_if.shtml

    Mike.

If you ever find yourself in my part of the world I owe you a beer. I was able to confirm the blue wire was the extra wire inside my adapter and cut it. Everything seems to be functioning as it should be now. Thank you for the help.

What brand consult cable are you connecting your computer with?

Don't really see a brand on it. The only writing is "NISSAN-14". It connects via USB cable. Should be this adapter. Nissan-14

An important point first.  The HICAS computer is required in order to give the power steering rack solenoid the PWM signal it needs to weight the steering.  If you remove it then you get no assistance.  This explains why pulling both plugs results in instant heavy steering.

Everything else points to the Consult device being the cause of the problem.  Without it you are fine.  With it you are not.  The time taken for the steering to go heavy is approximately the standard time it takes for the HICAS computer to crack the shits whenever it detects a fault it can't deal with.  For example, missing steering angle sensor.  I suggest that what is happening is that your Consult device is injecting something into the comms bus that is upsetting the HICAS computer.

Try a different scan tool from someone else.  See if it still occurs.  if it does, then it's not your tool specifically, it may be a wiring fault or something similar, related to the Consult plug on the car.

That you for the detailed response. While I agree that the Consult device is the "final straw" so to speak, I likely still have a problem with the HICAS system in some way, but I didn't want to make my wall of text into an even bigger wall of text so I left some of it out. If you are curious about the additional detail of the problem, it is mentioned in the thread linked below from last year.

After installing the HICAS eliminator the steering wheel no longer moves off center, but the HICAS light still comes on (probably normal with an eliminator) and the sensor still won't read as centered with the stock steering wheel (if you trust the information I am getting from the Nissan DataScan software).

I suppose in either case, the next step is to test with a different Consult device, and/or a different HICAS ECU. Not that either will be easy to come by where I live. Thanks again.

  3. GTR Steering Heavy With Consult Connected

I have been having some problems with the power steering in my R32 GTR when a Consult device is connected since I imported it a year ago and I am finally trying to get it sorted out. I have searched the forum and found a few related topics, but so far nothing has been able to fix the issue so I figured I would start my own thread with the hope that someone can help. Unhooking the HICAS ECU and/or cutting the green wire on the smaller plug were both recommended fixes from other threads that did not help in my case.

The issue is whenever I connect a device to the consult port the steering gets really heavy. I have tried various things with the HICAS ECU (since that was the typical culprit according to other threads) with no luck. Removing the HICAS ECU completely actually makes things worse, despite the fact that I have already removed the rest of the HICAS components (installed an eliminator kit a few months back).

I did a number of drive tests last night to try to narrow down the exact circumstances and have it listed out below. Any ideas/suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

    With NO Consult Device:
HICAS ECU Stock - Steering Normal
HICAS ECU Small Plug Removed - Steering Normal
HICAS ECU Both Plugs Removed - Steering Immediately Heavy
HICAS ECU Green Wire Cut - Steering Normal

    With Consult Device Connected:
HICAS ECU Stock - Steering Heavy After 5-10 Minutes of Driving
HICAS ECU Small Plug Removed - Steering Heavy After 5-10 Minutes of Driving
HICAS ECU Both Plugs Removed - Steering Immediately Heavy
HICAS ECU Green Wire Cut - Steering Heavy After 5-10 Minutes of Driving

Edit: Additional information that might be helpful. The steering wheel appears to be stock, but when I have the consult device connected and check Data Scan it shows the HICAS sensor is way out of place. Although if that was the issue I would think I would always have a problem, instead of only having a problem when a consult device is connected.

  4. Long story short, I am in the USA with an R32 GTR and I believe my power steering pump is dying, and I am also removing the HICAS system so I am looking for an R33 power steering pump as I understand they can be mounted to the R32 engine if you don't need to feed the HICAS system. So far I am struggling to find any pumps locally so I figured I would ask here. Thanks in advance.

Edit: I am aware that shipping wouldn't be cheap, but I am not sure what other options I have.

  5. Thanks for all the replies. Turns out a 92 Subaru SVX uses the same bulbs and my dad has one of those as a parts car. That will tide me over until I find better ones online.

As far as all of them going out at once, they have been dead since I bought the car so they very well could have died one at a time and the previous owner just never replaced them.

Edit: Just to add some additional info. All 6 bulbs really were bad. Also 1 of the 3 gauges in the middle cluster and about half the bulbs around the dash are also burned out. Also 1 from the primary gauge cluster. Apparently the previous owner didn't care about interior lights.

  6. None of the climate control buttons (temp up/down, mode, fan, etc) light up when I turn the lights on (a couple of the gauges also don't light, but those globes are easier to find). I am assuming the bulbs are burned out because everything else functions, but being in the US even the Nissan dealer can't tell me what the proper globe part number is to buy replacements. They gave me the part number from a 90 300zx, but it would be a special order without any proof they will be the right size.

If someone can tell me the proper part number for the globes, or possibly a suggestion of what else might cause them all to fail at once I would appreciate it. The part number the dealer gave me was 27613-01p10. A google search only lists the 300zx as a fit for that part number, which makes me question if it will work in a Skyline. Thanks in advance.

  7. OP: Like you, I have a 1990 R32 GTR here in the US (Oregon). As part of my suspension refresh I have completely removed the Hicas system, including the rear components, the hardlines, and the front solenoids. It is pretty easy work, removes quite a bit of weight, and does reduce some of the odd handling caused by Hicas.

If you ever decide to do a suspension rebuilt, drop me a note.. I can give you all of the details on where to get the replacement parts here in the US.

    Jeff

Jeff, I appreciate the offer. If I ever decide to rebuild the suspension I will let you know so you can help me track down parts (beyond just throwing on coilovers, which is my next purchase). I am starting to think my HICAS issue is just the steering wheel position sensor, in which case I might just fix it rather than remove it. At least for now. One of these days I should probably get around to doing that.

On an unrelated note, I am also in Portland, OR. I haven't seen any other R32 GTRs on the road, but I had heard there were at least a couple around.

  8. I would definitely agree that the people who seem to notice and compliment the car are mid-30s and under like GSX-R35 said. Other than 1 older gentleman from Australia who apparently used to own one in Australia before moving to the US at least.

  9. FWIW, I am in Portland, OR. So west coast but without a major port, and we don't have the car culture like the southern parts of the west coast. I am sure there are more than 2 of us in Portland with Skylines, but I have never seen one other than mine on the road, and only saw the 1 other one at an informal car show.

I agree that the car itself has not been forgotten, but I don't spend a lot of time around car enthusiasts and the general population doesn't seem to be all that aware of them at this point. With that said, for ever hour I spend driving it I probably get 3-5 people who give a thumbs up, or take a picture, but I am not sure if that is because they know the Skyline, or they just notice that I am on the wrong side of the car.

  10. Terry, to answer your questions:

Yes, I have found a lot of useful information on this site.It is definitely handy that there was another English speaking country that has had these cars for a long time, and that I was able to find a forum dedicated to them.

I have not noticed an increase in chatter about Skylines in the US. I think for the most part the fact that they were illegal for so long and they are so "old" at this point has caused most people to sort of forget about them. I do get a number of people who wave or give a thumbs up when they see me driving mine though.

I have only ever seen 1 Skyline in person other than my own, but the city I live in is only a "mid-sized" city (700,000 in the city, around 2 million if you count the suburbs). I am sure there are more in larger cities, but I still imagine they are very rare over here.

  11. Unplug the small plug from the HICAS computer (in the boot, the box mounted on the right side).

Full eliminator kit is the way to go IMO.

Do you have an aftermarket steering wheel?

Do not have an aftermarket steering wheel, however I just imported the car from Japan 1 month ago so its history is mostly unknown to me and the exporter has not been good about providing information. I do have reason to believe it previously had a full roll cage installed so it stands to reason that other aftermarket modifications were installed at one time.

  12. Personally I'd suggest the hicas eliminator kit as you replace a tie rod and a (most probably) worn out ball join with a toe arm and new bushes

A lock bar is much cheaper, you might get some funny faces trying to get the rear aligned with all the hicas gear in there though

Driving a RHD car in a LHD country already gets me plenty of funny looks anyway.

I figured the full eliminator kit would probably be the suggested option, and I was leaning that way myself.

  13. I recently imported an R32 Skyline GTR to the US and I am having some trouble with the HICAS (I assume). Since Skylines are still new to the US (only '89s and '90s are technically legal so far) I figured you guys might be a better source of information than most of the people local to me.

The short version is: is it worth trying to troubleshoot a HICAS issue, or should I just get an eliminator kit? Does the HICAS provide any actual benefit? I understand what its purpose is, but I see mixed results about whether or not it is a good thing to have.

A description of the HICAS issue I am having is below.

If I accelerate hard to highway speeds (80+kph) while also turning (ex. using a circle on-ramp/interchange), the steering wheel will move off-center. Meaning the top of the steering wheel will be at the 11 o'clock position rather than 12 o'clock like normal. The car still seems to drive straight when that happens, just the steering wheel is no longer straight. After roughly 5 minutes or 10km, the HICAS light will turn on, and the steering wheel will automatically center itself again so the top of the wheel is at the 12 o'clock position and it will stay that way until I turn the car off.

Also, any time I drive at highway speeds for 5 minutes or 10km the HICAS light comes on, regardless of whether or not the steering wheel goes off-center like in the situation described above.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Sorry if this has been asked before. I tried to search but didn't see any posts with a problem similar to mine.
