Is there a good place to learn how an engine works online?
RA708 replied to RA708's topic in General Automotive Discussion
Realistically I'll probably do some stuff like upgrading parts but I'll probably have to out source fabrication and specialized technical aspects. I would like to do the plan and stuff though and just go to professionals with it so they can either improve it or make what I ask. -

Already decided on a well paying career but it's not anything to do with cars. It would be a passion project that I would do on the side for the sake of doing it. Paying someone else to have the headache takes the fun away... Maybe I'm cursed to just ogle at good builds and to day dream about my own. -

Oh ok that makes so much sense. Thanks for clearing it up! -

How could you tell??/??/???/? Yeah I got no idea what I'm talking about haha. I'll be on P's soon. Yeah I figured that would be the case. Just wanna start learning to see how stupid of an idea it is. In general, I want to know so I can mod in future. It's interesting to know. Thanks! -

I have a terrible idea to twin charge a BNR34. Or an r35. So compression ratios and how they work as well as what certain measurements do for an engine (bore that sorta stuff). I will probably upgrade what ever engine it is with forged rods and pistons and some other strength upgrades. -

Exactly how each part works and how they all work together to make the engine function. That's all I'd need to do a basic build. Maybe how forced induction works. I probably need to learn some of the maths behind it all as well. -
Here’s a follow up question, what if you add a super charger to an already turned engine like a rb25det or something. Would the systems in place (inter coolers and exhaust manifold) be a good way to lessen time and head ache? Or would it be more annoying to add a supercharger to the turbo-ed system then designing a new system entirely?

So it's a ginormous undertaking that will be a massive headache but will be sorta cool if pulled off right. And also expensive. I'm sure it'll be as expensive as buying the car itself. I don't think you could just do this build without upgrading other things to take the extra power. Probably lots of custom stuff as well. All this assuming the person has mechanical knowledge. I'm stupid enough to try it but smart enough to realize there's gonna be mistakes even with an experienced mechanic. I'm a young bloke on minimum wage that gets dopamine from air being moved around and got his knowledge from a Donut video on how engines work.] Thanks for the response though super informative!

I know nothing about car mechanics or anything I'm just curious. My simple monkey brain wants to hear a stutututututu and weeeeeeeeeee on the same thing. Some people on other forums have said it's pointless and to just use a twin turbo setup which is definitely a thing in skylines. Could someone explain to me the benefit of having something twin charged vs twin turbo-ed?

Thanks! I'm gonna go for a high paying job so a gtr should be in the budget at some point. Is the wasteland the place for general socialization?

Oh yeah gets really bad down here. I’ll have to upgrade the heater and wind screen wipers as well for optimal performance.

I’ll take a 35 for sure. I prefer the look of the 34 get but performance wise the 35 would be awesome.

Thanks for the advice! It is an entirely unrealistic goal to own a GT-R. It would be something I'd like to do if, like you said, I would only get one if I came into a significant amount of money. I was looking to get a GT-V or GT-T or something like that. I think it would make a cool project build or something. Or I'm completely in over my head and I should just appreciate other skylines and never own one. I probably would daily a GT-V to be honest. Just because life isn't hard enough right now. Anyway thanks for the welcome!

Hey everyone! I'm quite young and I don't have enough to get a car right now but I love Nissan Skylines (Specifically the r34 GT-R. I'm so original I know.) and I would love to buy one in the future. I have no background knowledge, only an interest in cars, but I'd love to learn how they work so I can mod in the future. I've done some basic research on what model of Skyline I would start with and what mods to get started with are but nothing else. I'm here to learn! Hope you all have a great day
