  1. A little off topic...

But whoever it was that rated my garage as a 1 out of 5 would you care to identify yourself and elaborate as to why?

I really didn't want to rate my own garage but I added a 5 out of 5 just to balance it out and bring it back to the original 3 out of 5 as it has only had two ratings (mystery person and myself).

    Is this really a 1 out of 5 GT-R?

Anyways, I know it really doesn't mean anything as I am very happy with my car and that's all that should matter but I am still curious as to the motivation behind the rating.

Can't wait to add the turbo's after the Christmas craziness and really get some power behind it!

  2. Very good question Paul, as R31Nismoid has also stated I may be better off going with the -9's if I have no intention of building the engine at a later stage. To be completely honest, I am not so sure what I want to do as in the back of my mind I would still love a R34 or possibly even a R35 one day, which I then may decide to go all out on...

So I may end up going with the -9's after all as I do love a responsive, punchy set-up.

  3. R31Nismoid, to clarify I am after a minimum of 320awkw (not rear wheel as you mentioned), so that would equal approx. 370rwkw (I think) but I would like the scope to increase power later on if I desire. So wouldn't that make the Garret GT2860R-5's the better choice? My tuner also recommended to go for that or the HKS 2530's. How much lag are we talking about with the -5's? Wouldn't support mods like poncams and adjustable cam gears counteract this?

Also - the HKS kits are invaluable when you weigh up the screwing around to find this washer, that banjo etc, not to mention the cost. A mate and I put -7's on his targa car, and the price after finding all the bits and pieces was higher than an HKS kit, not to mention the time messing around finding it all.

I posted a link to the Garrett turbos on the previous page that make available an install kit which totals $2,000 less than the HKS equivalent.

    HKS 2530 full install kit=$4,560 + Actuators=$300, Total=$4,860.

    Garret GT2860R-5 inc. Actuators=$2,420 + Install Kit=$440, Total=$2,860.

Is there something else I would need to install the Garretts?

  4. if u want a responsive street setup

go -5 garrets, poncams, cam gears, injectors, power fc dj (ur better off not running air flow meters from the start coz if u want to go for a topmount setup u wont need to change ur ecu again)

expect around 450-500hp with this setup (if u dont wanna rebuild ur motor, dont go over 450 with a conservative tune)

however, once u come into that power bracket, u can also consider top mount setups like gt35's which will fetch you much a more aggressive top end power (550-650), ive been reading alot of stories where the power delivery of a top mount setup is alot smoother than a twin turbo setup such as the -5's, ur pistons will probably give out at this power level tho haha

ps. i noticed ur not running an oil cooler, get one asap!

Thank you for the advice on the oil cooler. I will look into these sort of modifications also.

Although, I am surprised that you noticed what I didn't have but missed what I did... A Haltech Platinum Pro ECU with a MAP sensor, therefore I will not need a Power FC DJ as you suggested.

  5. Yeah, I kind of got what he was eluding to. That word is just one of my pet hates as I have heard it overused lately.

Back to topic, if technology is present to allow a more user error forgiving ride then doesn't that allow for a more fun and engaging drive as you can easily and "safely" reach ridiculous speeds. And for those more skilled, surely it can only add to the potential that the car can reach. I know how good my R33 GT-R V-Spec feels, I can only imagine what a R35 has to offer.

  6. some people think the Nissan is too clinical becuase perhaps it's 'too good'

A little off topic but WTF exactly does clinical mean in this context? Sorry, that I am sounding a little passionate about this word but I have seen it so overused lately and I still can't figure out exactly what is trying to be portrayed. Are you saying that when you drive the GT-R, you feel like you are in a Dental Surgery? Hehe...

  7. Ye i think so, or you can get them but in extremely limited supply. Certainly not a common item to source.

    -7's are smaller than -9's (GT-SS).

Kinda a steel wheeled stock turbo virtually

Oh ok... Then what about the 2860R-10's? Sorry about all the questions, I just like to get all my facts together before moving forward with any plans.

  8. Thanks for the reply...

However, there seems to be more than a little difference with the price. So far the best price on the HKS 2530's is $4,560 plus an extra $300 for the actuators...

http://www.performance-wise.com/page41.htm (about half way down the page).

And the best price on the Garrett 2850R-5 is $2,420 including the actuators but I will need to purchase the install kit for an additional $440.

    http://www.kudosmotorsports.com/catalog/ga...line-p-302.html

As you can see going the Garrett route, I will save $2,000!! Unless anyone can recommend a cheaper HKS dealer?

Also, just another quick question... What do the Garrett 2560R-7's compare to? Are they somewhere between the HKS GT-SS and 2530?

  9. Ash has already posted... GT-RS will make well over 400rwkw... and be laggy on a 2.6L

    2530's will make around 350 - 400rwkw... or the Garrett equivalent -5's

GTSS are the right size for low 300rwkw... or the Garrett equivalents -9's

plenty of info about these turbos already on this site

Which is why I questioned the 330kw figure above.

Thank you for pointing out that one person has already posted some info.

I was just wondering if anyone had direct comparisons between the HKS 2530's and the Garrett 2860-5's. I realise they are meant to be the equivalent to each other but there must some differences however slight they may be. Is one more reliable than the other (build quality)? Is there any difference in performance characteristics? Or is it really as simple as the HKS costs more because of the name.

  10. I just made 330kw on 18psi with:

    Nismo fuel pump

    HKS dump Pipes

    Kakimoto Exhaust

    Sard 700cc Injectors

    Power FC

    Trust Drag Cooler

    HKS GT-RS turbos

Shouldn't GT-RS turbos be capable of more than 330kw? Is that an all wheel figure? I thought they would hit around the 350awkw as they have a larger compressor than most of the commonly used turbo's like the HKS 2530's or the Garrett 2860-5's.

Speaking of which... Could anybody offer any direct comparisons between these two turbo setups? I have noticed that the Garrett's can be bought a fair bit cheaper. What would be the difference between the HKS 2530's and the Garrett 2860-5's?

  11. I am sure this has been asked before and if it hasn't it should have been...

I tried doing a search but couldn't find anything.

Is there a link somewhere where you can see all the threads you have posted on and see when they were last updated in chronological order. Every single forum that I have been on has this in an easy to find location (usually on the home page after you sign in).

I can not seem to find it here. Is there something I am missing? Or does SAU not offer this feature? I can not see an option to subscribe to threads when I am posting on them. The only thing I could find was the option to subscribe to a forum but that subscribes to the entire section, not just the thread.

  12. Yes, I do have a Haltech Platinum Pro which has a MAP sensor.

I apologise for not putting two and two together earlier. I thought I still needed an AFM until talking a bit more with you guys here. So, the good news is that the AFM debate is null and void in my case... Yay!

I am waiting to get a quote back from the workshop and then I have to convince my Wife to put all that money aside for my baby (I think some jewellery, clothes and shoes etc. may be needed to get her on side :) ).

  13. Yes, they have been good to me also.

By they way, it wasn't them that recommended the 600cc injectors. That was somebody I was looking at sourcing my parts through.

Back to the AFM meter thing, PJ from PowerTune did mention your tune to me as a reference and he also said that if I wanted to achieve a higher power figure that the AFM would hold it back with the other mods I am considering. I think that the R34 units might be different to the R33 too.

  14. If the R33 afm's are the same as R34 units, you dont need to buy any other air flow meters. My R34 was tuned with the stock units and it's made almost 330awkw.

Cams are also not necessary as well to make that power.

6 or 700cc are fine, I think I would use 700s, just in case if you want to go more power later. Im using 800s atm, bit of an overkill as the duty is only on 55% but I plan to go over 400kw in the future.

You didn't get the work done at PowerTune by any chance did you? I have just been talking with them as they did the previous work on my car and I am very happy with the service.

Anyway, they said they just tuned a R34 with an Apexi PowerFC, 800cc injectors, Pon Cams, Adjustable Cam Gears and a set of Garret 2560-5's. Apparently it made 328awkw (20psi boost), which is the figure you mentioned with some of the parts you also just mentioned.

  15. :)

You can tune beyond their "range" but I would not risk doing it. I would go the Nismo AFM's if I had to, but I went with MAP sensor.

What do you mean by MAP sensor? This means that the ECU measures air flow, right?

I think my ECU has that feature also, it is a Haltech Platinum Pro and the specifications state... "Selectable onboard internal MAP sensor rated to 150kPa (up to 1.5 Bar or 22psi boost". Does this mean I can use my ECU instead? Which is the better way to go?

  16. Wow! Everything that could have been said about that ugly POS has been said...

I have seen some wacked out ricer bodykits in my time (some so bad that I feel embarrassed for the driver) but that R32 takes the prize. That Commodore would be a close second. At least it is not as bad as spending $10k on a custom body/paint job for a $5k Lancer!

You know what bugs me even more... Non GT-R Skylines with GTR badges! Today I saw two of them in my travels. You know what is even worse, in most cases the placement of the rear badge is not even close to where the original one is meant to be (usually too high)... If you are going to do something, then at least get it right! :P

What do you guys think? Should GT-R badges on non GT-R's be banished from GT-R Kingdom!
