  1. Get a latest gen VTi-R Prelude. It's the perfect P platers car. Still good looking, light, economical, reliable, sporty feel. They handle reasonably well and will break into the 6's for a 0-100 when driven well + the basic N/A mods. Ignore the FWD stigma bullshit - if you think people are going to laugh at you for that, they're going to laugh at you more for drag racing in a slow P plater car regardless of what drivetrain configuration you have.

Keep in mind some states have laws against P platers having ANY modifications to their cars, so it kind of defeats the point of going legit with a non-turbo car if you have plans to modify a Supra etc.

Most people on the road cannot drive a manual for shit, let alone drag with it. If you're playing traffic light heroes, an automatic 0-100 in 8 second car will beat 90% of the people driving manual 0-100 in 7 second cars. There's no such thing as a bad launch or a sloppy gear change.

    Oh yeah, bloody P platers.

Birds - Please try not to group all P platers together some we are not all the same.

As for Mods I agree. why worry about whether the car is turbo or not when any mod is illegal. exhaust mod only or a rb26dett the law sees it as the same "high performance" car. sure the cops may forgive an exhaust mod but will your insurance company do the same if you wrap it around a tree. remember part of your insurance agreement is that you must be legally allowed to drive the car.

  2. another quick car that you wont fins may people going around in is the Ralliart Magna. FWD I know but very limited production and had great proformance stock. recaro seats and a decent sports exhaust stock from memory around 11k to buy. looks really tough IMO and the cops should leave you be as its a magna.

something I would look at if you wanna test what vic roads will give an exemption to would be the HSV XU6. needs an exemtion for the supercharger but it does fit within their definition of a family car and has a power to weight ratio of just under 125KW.

  3. having read this and kinda being in the same boat here is what I can tell you from my experience.

From all my research the NA imports that you are looking at are slow (there is a reason that people mostly bought turbo versions). If you want to get a good car look at one where turbo's / superchargers werent an option. MX-5 is a perfect example, its light and quick, I have a mate with one and in the right colour with the hard top it looks fantastic. Plus who cares what others think about it being girly. another example of a good RWD you might want to look at that people call girly is the new MR2s.

I would suggest a V35, It what I will get once i have saved up enough and put a deposit on a house. just remember that as a P plater in Vic you can only get a sedan V35 the 350GT is on the prohibited list.

At the moment I am driving a "boring" VS commodore and while i dont go hooning or compete in the traffic light grand prix it is more than quick enough off the mark for me and has the power to let me over take on a freeway and undertake a tram.

To add to that I am sure I would have written of an import if i got one straight away. at least if i have an accident in the VS I dont care. I know this coz when I was on my Ls I scraped it on a pillar and wasnt to worried.

any way just my 2 bobs worth.

  4. correct me if I am wrong. but you are looking for mods yet you are a p plater. Mods are illegal for P Platers. cops and insurance may allow an aftermarket exhaust but I have always thought that extractors are considered engine mods and hence illegal.

so if your going to drive a car that the cops consider illegal you may as well just get a turbo and be done with it.

if your looking for a car with power that you can legally drive ( and please dont flame me) the VN Commodore is a good care wont look as good as your r33 but would no doubt beat it every time.

  5. Go to Just Car. it will be better but not my much. when I was looking at it for a R33 non-turbo auto with no mods they quoted me ~2600 so its cheaper than RACV but still im would be considered the same as you. 20 yrs old and only had my license 5 months. that said even with non sports car your going to get high costs for comp insurance i was quoted roughly 2k for my commodore to be given comp from just car. young male drivers no matter what your record will always get high premiums.

  6. Is that the same GTR that was at the show n shine on the weekend?

very sexy car I must say.

If cars must be brought in stock to Aust how exactly were you able to bring that in and comply it when it is so modded? or have the mods been done since its arrival?
