by the way whats in your 16?

ps. sorry to hijack the thread GTSR22

GTSR22 - Very Nice Coupe... though sorry I am also just "tyre kicking" - not in the market for one... the wife recons I already have to many toys..... Though I wouldn't mind some pics to put on Ozdat if that would be ok?

    JetDat -

I sure am a 16 nut.... though the GTR has taken my attention away from 1600's for a while.... but I will get back to it soon...

At the moment the only thing in the 2 door is... junk and lots of dust... But, there is an FJ20DET sitting on the floor next to it :(

which one day will end up in there... just as soon as we finish off the 4 door 16 that's sitting next to it on the waiting for a Z18ET to be fitted... once I find the time to reassemble the engine I got back from the machine shop a year ago :(

will have to catch up some time and get your 16 up on Ozdat... that is once I find the time to start updating Ozdat again... there is that bl#%dy time thing again... never seem to have enough of it anymore....

probably having two kids has something to do with it :)

  2. Costs me about $20 for every 100km's I do... (32GTR)

I only usually stick in $50 lots and always get around the 250km mark... doesn't seem to matter how I drive...

Compaired to my old carby turbo 240Z at around $20 for evey 50km's... it's a dream :P

hehe... I've got a R32 not a R33... you should be able to fit one in a R33... but so far I haven't found one the will fit a 32..

though there was one.... but my wife would end up with the seat in the uppermost position as far forward as the seat will go with her knees wedged into the dash... not the best position to be in if we were ever in an accident situation :/

And, before you even suggest it... No, I won't be selling the 32 and getting a 33 :)

love the 32... can't part with it...

If I can't find a new baby seat I guess I will have to drive the Mrs's family car around.... I guess it's only for 6 months or so...

my Daughter (now 5) has been using it.. must say I do get some funny looks with it there :/

and I recon it has saved me from at least one speeding fine...

  5. Has anyone ever fitted a baby seat into a R32 GTR?

I need to get a rearwards facing babyseat in (for a newborn)

I can fit him in later once he is a little bigger (around 6 months old) and can sit facing forwards... plenty of baby seats will fit then...

But so far I cannot find anything for a newborn that will fit.... can anyone help??

    cheers

  6. Hey Inasnt

I went for my EPA test at Macloud today... (I was suppose to go last week, but I had put it off till this week)

I passed the noise test right on the nose at 90db !!!

    talk about close....

As for Emissions test - didn't even test it.. he said skylines run very clean - so he didn't bother to test it... The fact the my Low Fuel Warning Light was glaring him in the eyes while he did the noise test may have atributed to his desission not to do the emissions test.. :P

But the big thing is that the Sound test was done at 5100 rpm

(not the usual 3200 rpm that the exhaust shops test at)

He said that a Twin Turbo 2.6 L has to be tested at 5100...

At the EPA they work off a more detailed Vehicle Reference Book then the epa approved exhaust shop test centers have...

And as the test centers don't have the detailed book - they test at the default for a NA 6 cyl. which is 3200rpm....

They also also asked me if I had changed my exhaust since my last EPA test in november 2002 when it tested at 85db at an exhaust shop test center... I said "Yes, I changed it when I got this latest epa notice... if I am going to get epa notices while running with a 85 db muffler then I might as well run one that is 90db"

He said "fair enough" and passed me :P

when u going in? i am going in on tuesday 1pm

    Thursday is my test...

I don't have the stock system - mine didn't have one when I bought it... so I will have to go for the new muffler....

Just got back from having a noise test done on my car at an exhaust place (one of the listed on the epa nitice) . - just wanted to see just how loud it was (before going for my EPA test at Macleod next week)

    89.99 db at 3200 rpm

it did go up to 90.1 but the revs had gone just over the 3200 mark...

He said he would have passed it, but agreed that EPA at Macleod would probably give me grief over it...

    bugger !!

I have to change my muffer just for .1 of a DB !!!!

(also have to change it because they won't accept removable siliencer tips unless they are welded in... and I ain't welding the removable tip into a jasma muffler for anybody :))

Getting a Truck muffler place to make me up a custom baffled muffler - nice hi flowing one - should shut it (and them) up once and for all (I hope)...

biggest problem we have with our Skylines is our turbos.....

You can make them 89db at 3200 rpm for a noise test... but there ain't no boost happening during the test.... get them on the open road with 14psi going through them and you are Way Over 89db

So if a cop hears you on boost - your probably going to get dicked...

Notices are not a problem - but FAILING the test when you present the car IS a very bad thing...

rang EPA about that one today and there is no such "3 strikes and your out" rules.... AS LONG as your car passes the tests - if you got 3 epa notices and each time you present the car for testing it passes your are ok, but if you get failed 3 times, then you might be in trouble.... (just how much trouble I didn't get into)

So as long as you fix it _before_ you go down for the tests then you should be ok -

The thing is and they acknowledge this - a cop cannot tell the difference between 89 and 90 db - so even if you are running a system at the legal 89db... most cops are going to pick it as being too loud - and request a check to be done.... and you may well pass that check at 89...

So notices are not that bad (thats not saying I like getting them) - But failing a test is bad...

The big thing to look out for is mobile EPA/roadworthy stations - because they can check for noise etc right then and there on the spot and can issue a fine if found to be in breach..

  10. Just off the phone from EPA again...

You can have 1 mod to your intake system...

Pod filters are legal as long as they are NOT foam type...

You can have them (paper type) as long as the rest of your intake is std...

On the same note (but not relevant to me in this case) You can relocate or fit a bigger intercooler as long as you don't have pod filters (only 1 mod allowed)

So for you GTST owners out there, you can front mount your intercooler as long as you don't have pod filters... bummer ay

  11. Just rang them again - and I _have_ to go to Macleod.

All the other testing stations can only test for noise

they want to test for emissions, and all other EPA related items

and they can ONLY do that at Macleod.....

I'ts because the car has been reported 3 times already (Once before I bought it and twice while I have had it) so they want to check out everything this time....

    bugger...

Everything is std execept for the Exhaust, Pod filters and it's got a Unichip piggybacked to the Stock ECU (piggybacked haha that's a joke more like strangling it :D) I want to get rid of the unichip anyway as it's a piece of you know what... the pods I believe are ok anyway... I have only got Std GTR plumb back bov's... oh it's got an HKS EBC but it's not connected anyway as I am only running std turbos at 14psi... but will remove the EBC out of the cabin just to be sure....

So as long as I quieten her down a bit with a muffler without a siliencer, remove the usless unichip and unused EBC then it should all pass without any problems....

Yep - rang the EPA - from the phone number on the letter...

They said that I have to bring the car to Macleod for _them_ to test/check... cannot go to exhaust place (as all they can test for is noise level)...

Yep - I just rang them, they class a siliencer as a "temporary defete device" and they are illegal ;)

You can have them as long as they are welded in, and not just spot welded in either, they muist be welded all the way around to be legal...

So looks like i'll be needing a new muffler.....

I live in East Bentleigh... so Moorabbin would be heaps closer...

I will ring them again tomorrow and see what they have to say...

By the way I never said my exhaust was still 85db.. just that it tested at 85 db last time :D

It's really about 91db - just over by a bee's you know what...

bugger too as it's a 100mm trust system and Jasma muffler with removable siliencer, all held together with V-bands - the last thing I want to do is butcher it, so I would like to just make up a new siliencer insert that brings it down another 2db to around 89db....

How do you think the epa go with mufflers with siliencer tips ??

Are they legal (as long as it's under 90 db with the siliencer fitted) ?? (the exhaust shop test places didn't have a problem with it last time.... but what about epa themselves...)

If not then I do have other option, I had some extra V-Band flanges made up (as the Japanise sizes are not available in Aus), so I could someday refit the original hotdog in place of the Cat (for track days only of course :)) so I might just have to use one of those flanges and buy a new quiter muffler and fit that in place of the Jasma...

  15. It turns out that the cop didn't pin me for noise - he wants the car checked to see if it

    complies with "the act"

If it was noise then I could take it to one of the listed Exhaust shops for testing

    - but this cops is saying (from me driving past him at 50km/h) that my car has some

other problem than niose??? I guess blow off valves (of which I only have the

std ones) or polution gear or something like that.... I would have thought that he

would need to pull me over to see something like that... but I guess not... he must

have x-ray vision or something :D

  16. Well I just got a dam epa notice in the mail too!!!

Had the car since August and already got one last year....

for that one I ony had to take the car to an Exhaust place to

have it tested for noise and mail in the certificate (tested at 85db ;)

This time it's got to go to Mcload for testing to see it it complies with the "ACT" !!

Can anyone guess where I got pinned ?

    .

    .

    .

    .

in bloody Clayton !! (Buckland street)

it's not like I can avoid the area - I have work suppliers in the

area not to mention friends that live in the area!

I remember the time too - the cops already had someone else

pulled over as I drove past them so couldn't stop me.... so they

just took the rego and epa'd me in the mail.....

I also found out that the last owner of my car got an epa notice

on the car the day he sold it to Carizma - That epa notice was

only lifted because the car was sold...

So now it's had 3 notices in the last year :)

If you are talking about the GTR with the Black 17' Impul wheels

it was me... otherwise if it was the one with the std wheels it was Ula32.

I was the car in front of Leewah (actually Gerald was driving Leewah 's car at the stage) on the way up Arthurs seat.. damm, now that was fun :P

    Cheers Terry

    Will do,

But my biggest problem is that I am off on holidays wednesday night (and am taking the car) so need something in the car (and something safe) cause I will be doing a lot of driving (with my family in the car) so I am in a bit of a spot - need to fix it by wednesday.. Off to Tassie on the ferry, so cannot delay our departure :(

With my old std arms in place I have almost 5mm play in both front wheels.. so they are not an option...

If only you were in Melbourne... or me me in Adelaide...

At this stage the only fix I can think of that I might have any chance of doing by wednesday is to go with the local pedders fitted kit :D

(or maybe the whiteline one is the same I think)

Unless someone in Melbourne would happen to have a couple of std upper control arms they can lend me for a couple of weeks?? :)

    regards

    James

    Ozdat

  20. I rang them yesterday and they recon they havent heard of the problem before...

I was going to try some locktight on them tomorrow and see how it goes... and if that doesn't fix it them they can go back and I will just have to make do with the pedders Adj. bush kit fitted to the std arms.. unless someone can suggest some other option

(other than the UAS ones - as the review on AutoSpeed wasn't too favourable for their ones)
