It's possible your F-con is set for a different communication port speed.
If dip switch 6 on the front of your F-con (under the blue dot) is down put it up (off) and try again.

no good, powered up and attempted to download and no orange light comes on.
loom is correct, green light is on fcon, thinks it downloads something but its nothing at all.
definatley right port as my usb port thing tells me so.
What USB port thing? Are you using USB to serial converter?
If you using anything other than COM 1 you have to change the setting in F-con downloader.

It needs to be powered but doesn't really need to be hooked up to the car. If you have a 12V power supply you can use that to power the ECU. I can find out which pins need to be connected if you want.

done tried once more and still no good,
no light comes on on the computer.
program installed ok and all that. cant think of anything else to be doing.
but the loom is 100% ok
Is the ECU powered? It has to be powered.
The phone plug (RJ12) should have:
nothing
black
yellow
red
green
nothing
looking from cable entry side.

1,3,5 on the plug, from the 5 pin side.
and on the 6 pin plug using yellow green black.
and they are all done correct.
It's pins 2,3,5 on the RS232 plug.

What version is it?

The ECU has to be powered. They are usually installed with the factory ECU so if it's plugged in it's running your car.

If anyone has any HKS V Pro files but doesn't know what they are, the file extensions identifies ECU version:
*.FP5 - version 3.1
*.F55 - version 3
*.FCP - version 2

The 2 (H8/534 & N1 NSR) big chips are not EPROMs and you don't program them. Only the EPROM (chip with white sticker) needs to be reprogrammed, just like in the R32 ECUs. Anyone able to reprogram the old R32 ECUs should be able to reprogram this one.

Nissan Skyline R33 GTST ECU RB25DET
Description:
This ECU has been modified to use a ROM chip to store engine maps, making it reprogrammable. The stock R33 ECU can not be reprogrammed. The daughterboards used to modify these ECUs are no longer in production and super rare. It’s a direct swap for a stock ECU. I have personally used it on my own R33 Skyline but have no longer use for it as I’ve sold the car.
Items Included:
1x Modified Nissan Skyline R33 GTST ECU with daughterboard for RB25DET engine.
1x EPROM with stock maps and removed speed cut.
As the item is 2nd hand I cannot offer a warranty, I have however used it on my own Skyline.
Postage Conditions:

What's the reason for installing the air temp sensor? Can't the stock be reused? Just curious, not having a go.

It will not work with version 2.1, it uses different commands.

well i gave it a try but the light didnt come on and the file saved is blank.
Is your F-con version 3.1? Is it gold with a blue dot like this one?

Here is how to download the calibration file:
1. You will need to build a very simple cable as per attached pic. No level converter or electronic components required
2. Plug cable to grey socket on your F-con V Pro and other end to serial port on your PC
3. Use attached software to download the calibration file
An orange light will come up on your F-con while downloading the file.

There is a way to download the file if the ECU is not locked. I'm trying to identify some of the maps so a few files to compare would help a lot.

Anyone willing to share their F-con V Pro calibration files? It’s a great ECU but not much is known about them. I’m specially interested in the newer gold version. Here is an R34 GTR F-con V Pro ver.3.1 calibration file.
