  1. My mistake, I thought it was the same bloke you were talking about, same car different owner.

I had better make sure before the job starts to find out exactly what I need for the box and diffs.

Usually with oil changes I do not bother and just let them do what they want, but since I will have a lot of torque and not changing the box, I want whatever can help.

  2. The RP has better load factorying

Been having a look at it, sounds like they have lubs for most applications :)

By the way Mick, thanks for your input for my build, all sorted and most parts are in and just about ready to go ahead with the job in a couple of weeks :)

    I will post the results.

    Cheers

  3. 4 years later,why not!

I love it, great as a DD :)

I do not like soft tops but I still think a Black R34 would look shit hot as a convertible, wonder how much it would cost to get a good job done and keep it tough?

Keep your pants on Jace :)

  4. I went with Just Cars, agreed value $45k, 1999 R34GTR with mods , $1900. I have 2 cars insured through them , 1 driver but no discounts available..

About to spend a heap on a build and I doubt if I can insure it for any more if I wanted to. I have a ***** star driving record and accident free, live in a safe area, car in a garage,no track work and an old bloke to boot that does not put a lot of Klms on a year, shat a young bloke that tracks must pay a fortune.

Tried Shannons before with my 350GT, about $400 more.

I will try some of the others Terry mentioned at renewal.

  5. Yeh , had a few blokes talking up their driving skills and I gave them a drive when I first got it home, they could not get it going to get into second, made me feel a bit better after my drive home from Sydney when I bought it,1 1/2 hours in peak hour traffic,F, it was less than a fun drive in your new car, haha

The OS triple was an expensive exercise for you :( but I guess you were giving it heaps and loving it at the time :)

My Quad is OK as a DD now with the changes I have made but from what the boys have said and what you have experienced I would be stupid not to have the clutch changed while I a having the build done.

Trouble is now I have to wait to get it done :(

  6. She's going good. Pretty much anybody can drive the car now. This clutch is just so easy to drive compared to some others.

Hi Richard, you have the Super coppermix C twin?

I found as my mods started to give the car some torque/response, the OS Giken Quad clutch became much easier to use as a DD and I have no doubt it will be even better after the stroker build BUT from what the blokes have said that have a similar set up, I would be nuts not to get a quality sprung twin clutch that will be more forgiving on the box.

I will have to think of selling off the leftovers, the RB26 block, the motor mods and clutch have only 3500Klms, forged internals etc and I do not want to bring any of them back home with me. So once I know what is coming off I will go to the for sales thread.

  7. First, like your first two posts in the thread, that most no sense, so um yeah right

Second, unless I forget how to read when I enter this thread you lost power putting the Spool head on, 450 to 440 is a lose if my math is correct, or is it 420-490 some where tuner/dyno dependant, so this new motor has made 1000hp or that just what your hoping for cause please correct me if I'm wrong but a motor that hasn't started makes 0hp, so who is dribbling shit know

Thirdly, I'm not into drag racing, I prefer circuit but you tell someone you run 1.07around Wakefield you get a vacant look but you tell em you run 11.1@123mph they get am idea, and given i live 10 minutes from the drag strip if I get home early from work on wednesday and feel like going fast I shot down to the drag strip for some fun, so driving to QLD to drag race is not happening, I did drive the VIC last year for Winton on Friday and DECA on Saturday, we have something like what you said you have in QLD here yeah so next time you come down for that shot me a PM and I'll come out for that and I'll race your 1000hp maybe car :)

You certainly know how to stop a thread Mick, haha
  8. Pete,

Jim Berry full monty with organic plate works for me in 26/30 GTR 350rwkw @ 6250 but then I don't 'launch' so may not suit your needs.

Back OT I spoke to Award about gbox strength recently, their view was that a good margin of failures occur due to:

    'nut that holds the wheel'

    downshifts rather than upshifts

Going with the Super Coppermix Twin Plate Clutch, done enough looking my head is going to fall off and have had some great help from some of the blokes on this site :)

I guess I am going to be that NUT and loving it.

  9. Broken boxes being a big problem and magnified when using 3 and 4 plate clutches,so I will ditch the Quad and going for a Twin, but what Twin to use on a torquey R34GTR.

There are a few that were recommended to me..Coppermix C Spec twin seems to be on the top of the list.

    What about carbon types?

  10. That PPG set is not a synchro box. It's dog gears. Just so you know, Pete. :)

Hi Paul, sent off for some info, dog gears, sequential gears they would be like ridding a bike again and that is OK but I guess they are crappy for DD use.

Saw a Video with a bloke in a parking lot and not having fun at parking , so I guess they can be a pain.

Just said to Joey that I might just get the build done with what I have and see what happens or give it a miss :)

On my laptop now so I cannot PM you.

    Pete

  11. I'm running 450kw at wheels on e85 through a stock box, previously at 410kw went to the drags, no issues

Another drag night coming up on the 16th July

Should hold up, box doesn't crunch or anything might just be lucky

I think I should just get the main work done drive the car the best I can and if/when it goes pop fix it instead of worrying about , when and if :)
  12. You push high power, you will be constantly finding the limits of parts, driver sympathy plays a major role in saving boxes.

Be gentle and it may last to some degree, be a brute, expect to be changing boxes often.

We bought a newly refurbished Trust/quaife 6 speed dog box, does not guarantee anything, all it takes is a hard lauch on sticky rubber and it could break a input shaft in a blink of an eye.

If you want something as good as it gets try a PPG gear set or part with the cash and go Hollinger.

Yeh, a bit of TLC must help but hard to do all the time, might have a look into PPG as I think the Hollinger is about $20k

Sometime crap happens when you are not even trying, a bit of gravel spin and then bite hard can = $$s

  13. I'm surprised he didn't call it a maxima

Why call it a Maxima, if anything a fat 350Z but it has SKYLINE stamped into the back of it, so I will go with the name on the back :)

    What "02 Skyline"is yours?

Daughter lost the spare keys to my R34GTR and cannot get a new one in Forster, anyone doing them in Newie ??

  14. As someone considering going GTR this thread concerns me. 380/450kw on e85 is a lot more common and smahed gearboxes appear to be a very constant issue.

Is it as bad as this thread suggests? With so many failures over so much time, has anyone 'fixed' this pre-emptively?

    [/quote

^^ I have been spooked by the posts and other stories online but there seems to be a common problem, big motors, tough clutches and hard changes but it is hard not to get into the next gear ASAP and easy enough to stuff the shift, even for a lot of you blokes that have been doing it for yonks!

I have put my build on hold until I sort out my clutch/box situation. I have to make up my mind before I have the motor out and going to or past 400awkw with a heap of torque. If I am going to spend a shat load on the build I should get this box/clutch thing sorted as best I can and fixed with the build.

So I will keep my mind open and listen to you blokes.

From what I have read and been told, there are no absolutes with high KWs and how long a particular part will hold up under the stresses these powerful motors and drivers put them under but it seems you can make changes that will help and save $s down the track :)

I think the other answer is, with these high performance cars, shat is going to happen sooner or later, so save some money to fix the next problem or sell it while it is still going OK :(
