  2. I have an '84 MR30 on gas for sale in SA. It does need some mechanical work but overall is pretty good. The tank needs it's 10 year inspection. It's done 365k. It's a 4 speed auto with lockup on 3rd and 4th (Yeah I know it's very unusual) but that's the way I bought it for my son. We've spent over $2k on it and will sell for $1200 ono. It needs rego but will put on for a serious buyer. PM me if interested. Rob.

BTW it's my sons, not my little baby!

  3. <Snip> As I wrote, if you know of a specific complaint, I would like to hear it.

My own take on the scrutineering is this. Every new scrutineer you present a car to is a good thing, every one has a different bugbear or pet peeve and so long as it is not something stupid and so long as they are reasonable and suggest things they would like to see changed in future rather than simply knocing you back (Unless it is something unsafe) then it just makes your car batter and safer. <snip>

I can not really comment on what was done on Sunday as my car was scrutineered and passed while I was in the sign on shed and the only comment was a suggestion for a performance improvement mod (Which I am planning to do anyway) But my car has been past a good number of scrutineers over a couple of years so I was not expecting problems.

    Hi Blue,

as you say each scrutineer has there own pet thing they look for. I look for perished/old fuel lines and stuffed brake pads and rotors.

I think my only conern with your car was the slight scuffing of the seat belts as they pass around the seat frame (quite sharp), but I made a suggestion that you are aware of it and perhaps do something that makes the edge less sharp.

If any scrutineer makes an unreasonable request, politely ask them to show you in the CAMS manual where it is required, as that is an item you may have inadvetantly missed.

  4. malalla is certainly "interesting" scrutineering wise..... only place they "make up regs on the spot"....

Can I ask what you are referring to with this comment?

I was one of the scrutineers and from my part, the majority of the cars presented was of a "very high quality" (quote from the chief scrutineer). "Any issues that were encountered were fixed with no fuss and no problems".

Especially considering that a large number of them were first timers on the track and had little or no knowledge of the requirements.

  5. Do not get me wrong, I was stoked to get a trophy/recognition for the time, money and effort I had put into my car over the years. But standard? I was not aware of the trophies for the peoples choice etc.

I believe that they could have said something like "I know theese people are not here but let us just quickly go thru the winners of the other classes" or similar.

It left us all wondering about how such cars could be ignored.

At least now after your explanation some of these questions have been cleared up, so thanks for that.

  6. 106 cars at the Show 'n' Shine on the Saturday and 60 track starters.

If Ravenoak is talking about the black C110 coupe, in my opinion it should have got "Car of the Show" but there was no such prize or plaque, which should be corrected in 2012 along with other STAND OUT anomalies.

    The classes were Prince, "Pre 1986" and then R31, HR31, R31GTS/SVD, R32, R33, R34 and Others.

Plaques were awarded to Winner & Runner Up for Standard & Modified to EVERY class except pre 1986?

There were 8+ R30 variants plus 2 C110's yet only 2 plaques and both of those were for STANDARD vehicles.

Can't help but notice the bias towards R31 variants???????

Maybe in 2012 we could have MR, HR, DR and Bastard in all variants???

The best R30 standard class was my factory version KHR30 Paul Newman Version and it was the best standard variant in the show and not just by my opinion.

Runner up was Rob Ward's MR30 sedan, with dedicated LPG, turbo, Haltek ignition, 17 inch wheels, commodore front brakes, disc brake conversion rears and 205+ Kw at the wheels.

    Standard????????? You work it out!

But! There were only 2 awards for all pre 1986 variants and no modified class, so runner up had to go somewhere.

If there was a modified class, the black C110 would have won hands down, lay down mizzaire and should have gone on to win best car of show, BUT IT DIDN'T?

    I agree with you.

No-one was more stunned that me when my car was named as runner up in standard class!!!!!

The standout was indeed the Black C110 and should have taken people choice award.....oh that's right, there wasn't one of those either.

  7. Not sure why you want to go with Weber carbys (for the sound maybe) but if you go dedicated LPG, emissions are no longer relevant as they are not tested with an LPG setup.

My car is proof you do not need to spend huge $'s to get performance. I will be at the Nationals on the 11th at Colley reserve. come and say hi and we can chat.

  8. Sorry this is off-topic, but those seats sound interesting. Did they bolt on to the existing rails? Any problems fitting them?

Now back to it... a very nice 4-speed auto, series 2 MR30 is up for sale...

    JH

I made up new mounts using 25mm (high) X 40mm (wide) tubing and mounted the runners directly to them. The drivers seat is now a bit too high so I will replace the back tubing with a bit of 10mm X 30mm bar to try to tilt it back.

I'll try to get some photo's to upload but I'm not sure this is the forum for that. Let me know where I should post it.

    Rob.

  9. Nice R30 there Rob, unfortunatly the asking price for these old birds are pretty sad these days. i couldnt sell my MINT hatchback for $2000 last year, and that included about another $2000 in spare parts (as well as a full turbo setup, manifilds, injectors the lot).

Most commonly they go for $500 or so, give or take.

the Import L20et powered 4 door HR30 sold for about $2500, that was a record high price so far!

I believe I am being realistic as a couple of friends in the auto industry have actually said it should have been a higher asking price. The proof will come regardless one way or another when/if it gets sold.

As an aside I have been offered over $12k for mine, but just do not want to part with it.

  10. Hi,

Looks in good condition. Most R30's I've seen are either 3sp auto or 5sp manual. Are the grill and tail lights the same as other ('series 1') R30's?

How many kms has it done?

What's the condition of the interior and seats?

    JH

    Hi.

It has done 348,000kms, but starts and runs very clean. It always starts on petrol and then goes to LPG. The body is pretty damn straight, and the paint is better than my own car!

Rear lights are the same as series 1 but overall there are a number of small mechanical and electrical differences between the two series. This is definitely 4 speed with converter lockup, so it is a fairly late box.

Interior is reasonable with the usual scratches and stuff, but the heater control panel looks like brand new. If I could, I would swap it with mine but mine has been modified too much. The seats are ok but could do with a bit of TLC if you were going to keep the car for a while.

I actually just put some Autotechnica seats in mine from Repco. Got them on special at $300 for the pair!

    Rob.

  11. Hi all,

I have a standard 1983 Series 2 R30 white sedan for sale in Adelaide. It looks just like mine but belongs to my son who can not afford to run it due to no job. We have spent countless hours on it polishing, cleaning etc. It is quite clean and tidy with only one fairly minor rust spot next to the right hand rear tail light.

    Pictures are coming!

Approx 337,000 kms (I have to check that)

  12. Hmm , R30's . I was there a few cars back with a quite clean DR30 (FJ20ET) .

That aside and back to the Nissan L series , probably most let down by their heads . Not within a bulls roar of an RB20 head (L20a head) or an RB25/26 head (L28 head) .

As you possibly know Nissan only turbocharged the L20a (2000cc same bore and stroke as RB20) and the largest or L28 - L28ET .

There are people here in the classic section that live and breathe L6 turbos but they are limited in production (read affordable) tune .

There were siamese core L28 blocks and things like very large chambered P90 turbo heads with raised roofs and shorter valve stems . They were built in an era when production cars had quite low static compression ratios and no intercooling .

So with the Turbo head/low CR/different pistons/exhaust manifold I think lifted from the L20a ET/slightly larger injectors (250-280cc ?) they had the 280Z and ZX turbo cars .

Those P90 open chambered heads are fine for low CRs but you don't want that . The very first of the MR30 2.4E's (1981 ?) had a better head casting than later emission heads and these have the closed heart shaped chambers similar to a real L16/18 SSS 219 casting head . I think all L4/L6 have the same valve spacing so the largest std L28 valves should go in but may need to change seats depending on what size and material the L24 head has . Pistons would probably have to be made for a turbo app . Crank and rods are good and if you used a BB turbo the oil pump should also be good .

I run an L24 block with L26 rod and crank, 180B pistons, A87 head and get 196rwkw with 563Nm of torque at 5700rpm. This is done on dedicated LPG and no computer, so to say they are not good is sorta wrong!

  13. Hey i'm lookin for info on my recently purchased r30.

plus anyone with knowledge on LSD's to fit the R30 or LSD's that will fit with minor mods your help will be greatly appreciated

The '88 Z32 (I think) 300Z LSD will bolt right in, but it may have different flange spacing, so you may have to get a tailshaft builder to make a new one. That's what i had to do. Went with a 70mm from Adelaide tailshafts.
