  11. The latest interesting development to note is that the previous Minister for Transport and Regional Services, the Hon. John Anderson MP was recently moved to another portfolio and was replaced with the Hon. Jim Lloyd MP. This is important because before he moved on John Anderson had indicated a decision on the future of the 15 Year Rule by the end of July 2004. Obviously this is now past. What the new Minister intends to do and his timeframe for doing it are unknown. However, with an election in the air it would seem to be very worthwhile to make the new Minister aware of the issue, as he is likely to be the one making the decision. It would be a tragedy for all enthusiasts if he were to do so without realising the high level of public interest in retaining the 15 Year Rule as it is. To maintain the rule long enough to enjoy a large range of 1990+ models, you should make your views known to the new Minister as soon as possible. There has never been a better chance to either postpone or moderate any intended changes. For the best impact, contact with the Minister should be meaningful and concise based on solid arguments and fact. If you need guidance on what to write or say, please read the information on this topic at: http://www.prestigemotorsport.com.au/?/au/...e=Industry+News You can also download a thorough discussion paper on this topic from: http://www.r34skyline.com/politics/our_sub..._submission.pdf Contact details for the Hon. 17. Well, the response period for comments to DOTARS' proposed changes to the 15 year rule has ended. So what to do now ? Sit back and wait for them to announce the option that THEY think we should have, then try to complain when it's all too late ? I think not. Rather, the pressure needs to be increased. It's time to contact your local Member of Parliament. The most impact will be generated by contact with MP's in marginal seats who are naturally very receptive to any issue that may serve to weaken their prospects for re-election. However, it is very important also for those residing in 'safe' electorates to contact their local MP to not only make them aware of the issues, but to bring to their attention how many tens of thousands of voters will be completely pi**ed off if the 15 year rule changes. How to Contact your Local MP Writing a short letter will be the most effective method, followed by a phone call, and lastly e-mail (only use e-mail only as a last resort as this tends to be ignored by Politicians). If you are not sure what this issue is about or what to say to your MP, you can read through all our previous updates at: http://www.prestigemotorsport.com.au/?/au/...e=Industry+News Not sure who to contact ? No problems -- see below To find out who your local MP is by using your postcode, use the following website: http://www.aec.gov.au/esearch/searchb/main.htm Then to find contact details for your MP, go to: http://www.aph.gov.au/house/members/mi-elctr.asp Marginal seats by name of seat and postcode are shown at: http://www.r34skyline.com/politics/electio...n2004/index.htm http://www.r34skyline.com/politics/electio...alPostCodes.htm Chances of Success are Good Bear in mind that we are pushing simply for the current regulations to be retained as they are -- this is always the path of least resistance for Govt. and providing that sufficient public comment reaches local MP's, there is a very good chance that the 15 year rule will be left alone for at least the next couple of years. Imagine the possibilities for all the new models this will give us access to at amazing prices. All you need to do to have your say is to take the time to write and post a short letter, or call your local MP and let them know how you feel ! Thanks Many thanks again to www.r34skyline.com for their efforts in putting together relevant information, for full detail see: http://www.r34skyline.com/politics/do15years.htm#Step6

  20. In SEVS workshops held in Melbourne and Sydney last week, a senior DOTARS officer (name available on request) admitted overwhelming support for retaining the 15 year rule as it is. However, in his next sentence this was countered by contempt for those who had sent in responses. Not that this is a responsible way to treat legitimate responses, however it plays into their hands to send them e-mails which they can easily ignore, or responses which raise all sorts of options of how to handle the issue which are outside their format for requesting feedback. Given what DOTARS are saying, there is no doubt at all that they have a pre-determined path and that the large response they have received to keep the rule as it is simply gets in their way. They will certainly steam-roll over it if they are allowed to get away with it. That they feel they can do this is shocking enough. There is a real risk that they will use this argument to discount a proportion of the responses received in the last 6 weeks, which would be a sound slap in the face for those who have taken the time to respond. We have given some thought as to how best to counter this. The obvious answer is that to raise an undiluted and undeniable voice against the proposed changes and to give the best chance of success, everyone who has not already done so should complete and fax / post in the DOTARS response form before 27th March. If you have sent in an altered form, or have sent an e-mail, or any other response without using their standard form for comments, they are likely to dismiss your opinion and exclude it from their feedback altogether. You can download the DOTARS response form in Adobe Acrobat at: http://www.r34skyline.com/politics/dotar/d...tions_paper.pdf The fact remains that if there is a very large response in favour of keeping the rule as it is, even DOTARS will find it difficult to justify making a decision that goes so much against public opinion. Your letters to the politicians (as indicated previously) and to your local members also sends a message that this issue has political ramifications, which may push the issue in the right direction. If you agree that we should be able to continue importing vehicles older than 15 years, then now is the time to make a stand before we lose them. Let your friends and family know about the kind of cars they will be missing out on at such good prices if the rule changes. BUT we need your help this week, before 27th March. Once the response period is finished, we will endeavour to obtain copies of the DOTARS follow-up report (through the Freedom of Information Act if necessary), and make these available to the Mailing List so that everyone who is interested in this topic can see how the issue is addressed. If there is any evidence of an unbiased approach, we will then encourage complaints to the appropriate bodies which oversee the decisions of Govt. Departments, as well as pursuing other avenues of complaint.
