  1. Look at all these amateurs with their dumpling recommendations :P

This place is epic cheap and recommended by all my poor/cheap rmit city students who feed in the area lol

    http://www.theage.com.au/news/restaurant-r...2637856379.html

I did recommend that place before you :D Who's the amateur here? :D

Anyway, this dumpling place might be cheap and good but try taking a look at the kitchen. I was there this afternoon sitting at the back on the ground floor, saw the waitress cleaning the table before handing back to the kitchen, picked up a dumpling from the kitchen table with her hands and drop it back on the plate :)

  2. Hey Guys,

I just got a r32 and am pretty new around here.

just wondering about a good alarm to get and who can install them?

any ideas? i;m currently leaning towards a viper 5901 because ive had one in the past....

1st thing is to join the SAU VIC club and be a paid member.

Then approach this car alarm guy called Ben. He did alarms for heaps of SAU members. Not too sure whether he still does it though. Maybe some one else can fill us in on his status?

  3. After going to places like Beijing, Shanghai and Hong Kong, i reckon the closest you get to good 'Xiao Long Bao' will be at Hutong in the city. It is just opposite Flowerdrum.

Be sure to ring them up and book a table before you go. Eating these xiao long bao is an 'art'. You have to pick them up carefully from those bamboo steamers, ensuring the gravy is still inside, dip it into some vinegar and devour it.

A good xiao long bao is one which has the best gravy and thin fine skin. Doubt any other places in Melbourne can be any better than Hutong in that aspect.

If you are talking about steamed or fried dumplings, the Shanghai Dumpling place at Tattersalls Lane in the City would be my pick. Another place worth mentioning will be 1+1 Dumpling noodles restaurant along Hopkins St in Footscray.

Btw, steamed dumplings and xiao long baos are 2 different things ;)

    My 2 cents

  4. Exchange: DONCASTER

    CCA: MELBOURNE

    State: Victoria

    Class: Zone 1 (Metro)

This was what i see when i type in my phone number on the Whirlpool forums to check for my telephone exchange. How did you find out your exchange is in Collingwood? Did you find out from this site? http://whirlpool.net.au/wiki/?tag=AEG_Vic

Well games i play are pretty much local servers like COD . A slight lag might mean the enemy sees me before i see him :mrt:.

I understand that internode and iinet are currently the best outside Telstra/Optus. I'm currently using ADSL 2+ with Optus. They have some deal going on that provides free cable installation to your house and i can have full foxtel channels. That's what bought me over ;)

  5. It's situation dependant.

If you are not getting the "extreme" cable or whatever from Telstra, then not really.

Cable vs ADSL2+ depends on distance from the exchange. If you are 4km's (fringe) then ADSL2+ will be slower.

However if you are close (800m) then it's faster. I can download 1.8mb/sec without much drama.

Although lately it's been stuck around 1.2 ... i suspect i know why so i'll sort that out easily enough...

Also remember other factory. Cable (from Telstra) is expensive for what you are getting.

So download speed is not neccesarily the be all & end all... You need to count 3 things IMO

    - $$$

    - GB allowance

    - Speed

If you don't care about the cost/small download quota's and are a fair way from your exhange then cable is for you.

If you care about cost vs download quota and can live with reasonable speed then it'll be ADSL2+ that wins everytime.. and if you are close to the exchange, it'll be cable virtually as well.

    Interesting comparison Ash.

I live in the city but i checked that my exchange is actually the Donchaster exchange? Isn't that a bit weird. Does that mean my closest exchange is all the way in Donchaster?

Yes, i'm looking at the BigPond Elite Cable. According to the customer service guy i chatted to, my download speeds should be able to hit 30MBps. No idea if he is bull-shitting me or not.

I use the net for surfing most of the time and occasionally gaming. So i'd like smooth and lag-free internet.

  6. Go to the Tyrepower at Hawthorn. They take care of tyres for track cars from Chasers and they give a decent price.

Micky is the person to look for. Ask him what he can recommend you for your budget. As what Paul said, you should be careful about what you choose for your tyres. They are the most important link between your car and the road. I wouldn't be stingy over tyres.

Suggest you budget more than $200 a corner if possible for your 265s.

  7. I would go to the DIY Car wash along City Rd / Crockford St. Opposite a 7-Eleven servo. They close at 10pm though.

It is one of the cleanest DIY wash around the CBD area and it is just down the road from where u live.

  8. Thanks for all your suggestions and feedback people!

Managed to change my currency back into AUD this afternoon.

I have to agree, the shops along Swanston Street do have pretty competitive rates. I would recommend anyone who is looking for some currency exchange to shop around that stretch and you will be surprised at the rates they are willing to offer.

    Thanks again.

  9. To exchange or obtain foreign currency I just go to AMEX, there's one on Collins St inside the Westpac branch.. 360 Collins from memory, near Queen.

Some Westpac branches will also accept FX and exchange to AUD but they will not give it out, as they do not keep any at the branch. Both Westpac and AMEX charge $8 fees for each currency (last I was there anyway).

You can ring AMEX and get them to give you a rate over the phone for the exchange, you can also book ahead and they have online options so you can book Foreign Currency before you travel.

    Thanks Kaz! :P

Will give them a ring tomorrow and see what they can do for me. Was thinking of heading down to Swanston tomorrow to check out the exchange rates too.

  10. all depends on how much and which currency.

if it under au $50, prob not worth it.

but my rule is. if your planning on going back in next year or 2 keep it.

if u know ay-one heading there soonish, do them a exchange (use xe.com to find rate) then neither of u get's hit with fees.

if u think they are pretty..keep it

else offload it and prepared to be hurt.

i have 2-300$ in strange currency on my desk at work that is just not worch changing, (some of it you cannot change, eg Laos Kip).

    M

Thanks for the suggestion M. It's actually worth a couple of thousand AUD :) . That's why i would rather have a currency exchange instead of keeping them. If it was worth about AUD$100, i'll definitely keep them.

Will try the Swanston St joint and see if they will give me decent rates.

    Thanks guys.

  11. Hi guys,

I am looking for a money changer to change some foreign currencies. I'm aware that a few of you travel a fair bit for business/work overseas.

Can anybody recommend me a money changer with decent rates? Or will i just be better off going to the bank directly? Prefer places not too far from the city please.

    Thanks

  12. i only got $200 ? :) ... as you get older the less you get *sigh* was hoping to get a oil cooler for my car haha

ONLY $200?? Man, that's alot of money already. You should be contented with that :(. Maybe use that money for a new air filter :D

  13. Was cruising in the rain along Footscray Road just now during lunch hour.

Saw this white R33 gtst with green P plates beating a red light through the junction. The lights were red even before he crossed the white line on the near side. Really disappointed with some of the younger skyline drivers.

An accident is just waiting to happen with that sort of driving attitude.
