  1. 10.3 kilometers per litre. That's about 9.8l per 100 ks.

I'll admit, not quite Stagea level, but not what I'd call economical.

I have a st-s pulsar (st-l level trim with sss motor and wheels). On my commute to work (majority highway driving) I average about 6.2-6.3L/100kms according to the dash (which is about 6.7L/100 when I calculate it properly, which is better than I get from the missus n15 sss and about the same as I was getting from my mirage). If I drive efficiently and sit on 110kmh instead of 115 to 118 (which is about 110kmh based of the gps and the average speed readout on the dash) then I've had the dash fuel economy read 5.8L/100kms for the round trip to work (125kms). I rarely rev the thing over 3500rpm though because you just don't need to. They pull hard enough between 2500 and 3500 rpm there's no point revving any higher. If anything, they start to choke above 4000rpm.

They are certainly no "hot hatch" like a mazda 3 mps or focus st, etc, but as far as warm hatches go I'm more than happy with mine. They are also a darn sight cheaper than the hot hatches at under 30k.

  2. I know I didn't post much in the 2015 thread because of the lack of FTA coverage.

Bringing back refueling might help things improve, but they also need to get rid of the fuel flow limit, otherwise it's pointless. F1 management needs to hand out more money to the teams, and more evenly, so that there can be new teams come into the sport and the low budget teams actually have a chance to stay viable and have something to fight for rather than just being there to make up the numbers, running round a few laps down. But the fact that they are so fast and require do much aero to just stay on the track means that on track overtaking has really taken a back seat to the undercut, which reduces the spectacle. This is where tin top racing does it well. Low down force and tight performance parity means close on track racing.

So they either need to blueprint the engines or open up development (the latter of which will only help the big teams, and make the budget teams struggle even more to make the time cut).

  3. ...and if Renault do buy Lotus I hope they boot Paster and get Hulk in the seat. The team could do wnders wuth Bell and a bit more budget

They'd have more of a budget if they weren't rebuilding maldonado's car every time he crashes it (in other words, every round)

  4. Mclaren and Red Bull are sooooo bad right now its giving FI, STR and even Sauber a walk up opportunity at points at most GPs.

Wasnt a bad race...thankfully Rosberg drove well. Cant believe how shit Kimi is all of a sudden. He has fallen off a cliff.

Time to get Rimain or Hulk in that seat. Bottas can stay at Williams

Kimi isn't shit all of a sudden, he's been shit for ages. Well not really shit, just mediocre with the occasional shit race. This year though he's decided to lift his game and make sure he's shit more consistently. He should've given up a few years back. But I suppose it makes it easier for Ferrari to employ a good driver as their number 1 driver without having to worry about team orders causing problems....

    Interesting bit of trivia

By this phase of the season last year, the SAU F1 thread had around 1650 posts. Same time this year we are at what, 650-ish?

Certainly a loss of interest in the spectacle around here..

The fact that only half the races are shown live on fta tv probably has something to do with that. That's why I don't post much

  5. The one thing to consider with this is that you are taking an inlet manifold that is designed (by people who know a thing or 2 about airflow) to flow in the stock design and then pumping air in from a totally different direction. It might look tidier, and improve response by 0.0001 of a second because of there being a little bit less piping, but at what cost? You'll probably find that number 5 and 6 cylinders lean right out, while 1 and 2 run rich. And the best bit is that unless you hook up a wideband o2 sensor to each individual cylinder, you don't have any idea that it's happening until your engine pops.

And being around cars all your life doesn't mean you actually know how stuff works. What it means is that you may know a lot of information, but it doesn't mean that the information is correct.

  6. Flawed because why?

It provided a set of rules that lasted some ten years (not just here but overseas) which was pretty long lived for the time.

It left us with a legacy of some brilliant cars the likes of which we wont see again.

It generated good racing and rewarded innovation.

Put it in the context of the Rovers that ran in 1984 and compare them to the BMW's and GTR's running in 1992. The changes in technology are huge and serve to demonstrate that the rules were pretty good. Have a look at the winners of the SATCC from 1985 to 1992. Volvos, BMW's 3 & 6 series, R31's, R32's, Sierras. Then you get to the round and endurance race winners - Jaguars, Commodores, Sierras.

That the racing was not so great at the very end when the manufacturers had stopped homologating cars and moved on to other formulas shouldn't be a surprise to anyone.

Australia was one of the last countries to ditch group a racing. That's probably part of the reason why the r32 gtr didn't get sold in many other countries. There was no group a left for it to compete in.

As for group a being flawed, it wasn't so much the category itself, but the people running it. The parity controls were exceptionally poor. The gtr dominance was an example of that. I know this won't sit well on a skyline forum, but if there was any sort of decent parity then the gtr wouldn't have been anywhere near as successful. As to why the gtr was so successful comes down to one simple thing. The fact that Nissan sat down with the rule book and designed a car from the ground up to win the category, regardless of whether it would actually sell or not. That and the fact that it cost about twice as much to buy as the top model Commodore at the time. They pretty much did the equivalent of bringing the Australian cricket team to a game of backyard cricket. And sure, what they did was within the rules, but it made the racing a lot more boring than classes with decent parity.

But we are going off topic.

  7. Just back to the refueling issue for a second, I don't think they really need refueling to make the racing interesting again, just add 20l to the size of the fuel tank and specify that it must be full before the race (so that teams don't just partially fill it, get their calculations wrong and require the driver to conserve fuel). Then the drivers will only be driving to a tyre number, which is acceptable. You can't remove all strategy options from the race. If you had tyres that would also hold up well and not drop in performance then cars would simply pit once for the different option tyres and the slower teams would simply finish up further behind than they currently are because there would be no benefit from only 1 stopping instead of 2 stopping.

  8. I had a mate with a 180sx that suddenly lost power. You could also rev it and have flames come out the exhaust just by pumping the throttle at about 2500rpm. It turned out that the exhaust cam was snapped (but still holding together, just twisted a bit) and so the ignition timing was out relative to the cam.

I'd check the cam timing, as well as making sure the cam sensor is working.

  9. Yet another "yay, Nissan is coming back to v8 supercars" style article. Why do people (generally Nissan fanboys) think that having a "gtr" (purposely used brackets because it will only be gtr panels on a blueprint chassis) back in the category means that Nissan will see the same sort of dominance as the exceptionally flawed group A category? Nissan fanboys expected Nissan to come into the v8s and win like they did over 20 years ago. But, as any realist would've expected, they didn't. Times have changed. Sure Nissan has had some success in other categories relatively quickly, but that is with a whole lot more global support than what is put into the v8s. I'm guessing that the new regulations will be just different enough that the gt3 cars won't fit into the regulations and do a whole lot of development will need to be done, resulting in Nissan remaining mid pack.

  10. I just watched the race. That was one of the most exciting f1 races in a while. Good to see fez being able to stick it to the mercs a bit.

Dan was kind if lucky with that engine failure. Being able to cross the line and still hold position and get points.

  11. 89cal is right about the engine vs power unit. The "power unit" consists of 6 items: the internal combustion engine, mgu k, mgu h, energy store, turbocharger and ecu (and associated electronics). The 4 power units rule applies to all but the ecu. So what it essentially means is that you are allowed 4 ICE, 4 turbos, 4 mgu k, 4 mgu h and 4 energy stores. If you use 5 of any 1 of these items then you get a penalty, even if you have only used 1 of all the other items.

So there will be teams that are already onto their second or third ICE already but are on the first of the rest of the power unit.

That is why they won't just swap out a whole power unit each time something fails. If they blow an engine 1 race, and then a turbo the next and then a mgu k the 3rd race then it would count as 3 power units swapped if they changed the whole thing, or just 1 if they change only the damaged item.

  12. Rosberg will be lucky to win a race this season (barring failures/DNF's for Hamilton)

Mentally he appears to be gone already.

Insert "leave britney alone" clip here.....

Although I actually give no f**ks for rosberg

  13. I ended up getting foxtel go, would be nice if it was 1080p but its not too bad. Ferarri looking half a shot, red bull in struggle town haha love it

So redbull are going just as expected then.
