  1. Philips are a great brand, but be prepared to pay the big money. I have had success with the cheaper Chinese brand, they lasted around 5 years from memory and then changed them again to the same brand before I sold the car a few years ago.

Most people change their cars often so not worth the extra $ investment in my opinion.

Very early build GTR with that chassis number.

Update LOL- Duncan you beat me to it.

  3. Well - I have my 94 V-Spec2, stock, Grade 5A and 22,000 genuine kms (full service history) insured at 55K and I don't think that's excessive....

Paid 35K at Auction 2.5 years ago..... (Thanks Iron Chef ;-)

Glad I got it when I did - not many like it left

Might sell it to Yankee land in 2019

    Cheers

    Andreas

Andreas - you are a very lucky guy! I remember your car very well when it came up for Auction as it was very hard to forget!

Just to clarify, $35K was car cost only plus associated import costs?

  4. Regarding the exchange rates, if you've got a good importer you won't get ripped too badly. I used OzForex when I imported my car who converted the money for me and paid for the car. They generally exchange at 1.5 yen less than the spot rate which is excellent. Last year I imported my 34 for a spot rate of around 96 yen per Aussie $ which meant I paid around 94.5 yen.

Right now the spot rate is 85.5 so it's improving, and Japan just intro'd negative interest rates so prepare for it to get even better IMO.

I can also vouch for Ox Forex- used twice before when I imported directly and both times were very good rates as you have stated.

I don't know how long the negative interest rates in Japan will take to make the exchange rate more attractive for us though.....

  5. Bob you are right about recent Japan prices and the currency changes - I have myself tracked the market over the last few years and even imported directly.

But... The question was what it was worth in the Australian market and frankly the local market hasn't caught up with the overseas market in my opinion. Not yet anyway!

Heck i was looking at this vspec in black,109,000km from auction a little while ago for around $25k landed and complied (81 yen to dollar). In hindsight that was one I should have bought, only missed out by a little!

And here another recent one for under $30k landed and complied , vspec2, grade 4b, white, 65,000km

Both the above examples didn't have any Japanese reg "shaken" left so we're good value for export. The ones you have cited mostly have reg plates and 'shaken' left and so can increase the sale prices a few thousand dollars over no 'shaken' vehicles and they are usually sold locally in Japan for that reason.

i would be interested to hear what others think as well....

    Where is Iron Chef???

  6. Yes the Americans have started to import them- 89 and 90 models given they need to be 25 years old to be eligible. This has translated to increased prices at auction in Japan, no doubt, and including the Nismo model, however the 93 and 94 Models (including Vspec I and II) models, I think, are relatively safe for a little while longer.

How much longer i'm not sure.

I agree, sourcing one locally is the go, but difficult to find in good original condition, without major drawbacks, with books/documentation etc and with any sort of Deregistration Certificate out of Japan to confirm the actual mileage travelled.

  7. Great replys guys.. i understand what youre saying Bob.. id rather fork out abit more upfront and have a car that i am happy with and wont have to spend too much money on to rectify issues. Im very fussy and the smallest things bug me haha. Im also with you on silver bob haha but white is my second colour for the GTR. Your car is beautiful btw.

A 32gtr is a car ive always wanted but ive stayed away from due to the bad press they get about huge maintenence bills and all being thrashed, i just sold my s15 and am currently deciding between a 32 or an EVO9. My heart wants a 32 but my head keeps saying go with the newer evo9. The car will be a daily which leads me to the evo but im still undecided.

Mike T , did you request that the car go through a seperate roadworthy inspection to the dealer as im worried dealers will pass anything to make their sale easier and cheaper? Id most likely get a third party inspection done anyway through state roads or a workshop.

If you have a close look at the ads for that car and you have a good eye for reading Japanese Auction sheets, you will see that that car had ( what looks to me) a grade 3C grading at Auction in Japan. If you are keen on the car, inspect it yourself first and haggle hard, then get State roads to go over it thoroughly, and then you can base your final decision on some facts instead of emotion.

My feeling is that with that auction grade, it has been 'prepped for sale', so expect some cosmetic' touches' or repainting already done and/or more. I can already see that the intake plenum has been repainted, presumably to get rid of the cracked and peeling off original paint, which these do suffer from if they have had a hard time. To compare, just look at any ADM GTR with these sort of Km's to see the condition, original paint and finish it should have.

Bob mentioned japanese auction gradings- I might just add that, from personal experience, there is a big difference between a Grade 3 and 3.5, and 3.5 and 4.0 auction graded vehicles in Japan, and they do vary between auction house to auction house as well! I generally like to aim for a minimum Grade 4B with those sort of kms, but expect to pay low to mid 30's landed and complied for a very good Vspec 1 or 2 example these days with that mileage out of the motherland. Anything under 50,000kms, grade 4.5 or 5 (if you can find one), the skies the limit.

    My 2 cents.
