  1. Third, same. Looks like a really good unit too!

There's a new firmware update out for the LTQ6000 that now allows you to use it as a rally trip meter. Used it at Targa nd it worked brilliantly. It logs and records all your stage times etc and you chancheck out speeds, track map etc.

  2. Here's some tips for best format for the tube.

    Codec: H.264 or quicktime MOV

Bitrate: at least the same rate as the original, typically around 10,000 Kb/sec for 1080P and 8,000 Kb/sec for 720P

Framerate: 25 or 30 FPS to match the original framerate. If recorded at 50 or 60 frames per sec, then convert to 25 or 30 respectively as youtube only plays in 30fps maximum.

Use MPEG streamclip to quickly trim video with no quality loss or AVS Video Editor or Avid Studio for more complex editing.

Here's some video using these settings. Set to 1080P for best results

  3. Sounds like CAMS are about to go wild with more restrictions once again. I've NEVER seen a camera come off in the last 4 years at ANY event I've been to. Internal, external - wherever.

I can also tell you a ContourGPS, with suction mount, half of which is metal - is over 200g. I have one next to me right now...

Or does it mean camera 200g, mount 200g - so 400g total?

Let's wait until the guidelines are released, but my understanding is camera and mount is included in the weight. CAMS are quite right to expect a secondary tether on something held on by nothing more that vacum, and reliant on the user applying it correctly.

  4. Setting up a gopro or contour can be done in literally 15 seconds, thats from approaching a random car to walking away. Suction cap it to any exterior surface or any interior window, adjust the camera angle and press power/record. Try doing that with a RadCam, its a 15min job that involves cable ties, race tape, etc and is 'generally' limited to interior footage only.

Thier is no off-the-shelf camera on the market today that will give you good sound when mounted externally however just about all cameras will give great quality video for the club-trackday user. Battery comes down to management, if you are sitting in the pits with the camera on for 15mins before you go out on track well yes you will probably run out of battery before a trackday is finished but they all come with chargers and a second battery is quite cheap to carry with you.

Also what are the weight limits for cameras and motorsport?

To claify the position on weights for cameras in cars. There is due out soon a set of CAMS guidelines for mounting cameras in cars. I know, beacuse I was a consultant on the project. Broadly speaking, the weight limit is 200 grams including mounts for each component, without special mounting requirements. Anything over that will need to be enclosed in a special mount. Cameras like the RadCAM HD20, GoPro, Contour, Drift, Replay XD1080 are all well under that weight, and will all comply.

No cameras are to be mounted outside or inside unless there is a substantial secondary tether connected to stop accidental release of the camera. I have over 10 years experience in fitting onboard cameras for TV etc and so cameras like the RadCAM are very easy to install and use. I did the onboards for the GT Series at Phillip Island for One HD last year and trust me, if they were that hard to fit, I wouldn't use them. I did 10 cars by myself and even had to change mounting position in between races. The camera can be mounted outside as the new cables are thin enough to be routed inside, allowing the driver to operate the camera. Audio is then sorted as the mic is located on the receiver, rather than the camera mounted out in the breeze. The RadCAM is the official camera of the ARC, V8 Utes, Bondi Rescue, Targa, the Bathurst 12 hour and the WRC Academy etc etc., so it must have something going for it.

Battery life is always an issue as we all forget to turn off cameras from time to time and flat batteries are the cause of more lost potential footage than I care to remember.

No date set for release of the new guidelines, but I am told it will be soon.

  5. As Martyboy suggested to me long ago when I got my RadCam from him I went and got a cheap powered external micrphone. The supplied RadCam one works well, even better with a wind muffle thingy over it, but the external option and little wind muffler works a treat.

External mic is the ONLY way to go IMO. I place mine up under the dash out of the breeze when alone in the car, or clip it to Timmy's seat head restraint when rallying so we get a good mix of his note calling and the car's sound. *** All of my YouTube stuiff with two of us in the car (except 999 duty in the Evo) is recorded on a POV1 but I'm sure the RadCam will do just as good of a job but with improved picture once properly set up..

The quest fopr good sound and vision in one camera is finally over. RaceRecall.com now has the new RadCAM HD20. This is the successor to the RadCAM HDPro and it has anumber of improvements, namely, Audio gain control over the internal or external microphone, 6 Hour recording on one battery charge and a smaller detachable camera head. Here's a couple of clips to illustrate

Both recorded with the internal mic and gain setting on 4

  6. Was watching Goodwood 2011 the other day and noticed just about every car was using a GoPro HD. So the footage seems good enough for a BBC production. Notice they use them on the handlebars of bikes etc on Top Gear as well. The audio is rubbish. We were using one on a rally car on the weekend and even in the car they simply pick up too much background noise, something to do with the frequency of that noise being recorded better then an 4cylinder pinned to the floor :) Must be some software out there to filter out the "noise"

The problem with the GoPro is the plastic case it comes in. A bit like having your head inside a 20ltr drum. It seems to highlight all the high frequency sounds.

  7. Very true, the picture quality is awesome, but the sound is truly appalling. I actually wonder how anyone could have signed that off prior to production with a "yep, that's done finished".

For an independent test comparison, have a look at this video done by Hot Rod Magazine

The Replay XD1080 is a clear leader. We sell GoPro, Contour & Replay and the Replay is a clear winner in my book. AVE are using them for the new season of Speedweek on SBS.

  8. This looks awesome. Can use it for the bike as well, and easy to read screen at a good price. Even has all the australian tracks already programmed or ready to download.

    Any negatives?

Looks like this will be my christmas present to myself.

The new Qstarz LT Q6000 is probably better suited to motorcycles as it's completely self contained single box and requires no wiring or fitting. It just has a simple mount for attachment to handlebars.

Here's a little video recorded on our new RadCam using the Qstarz and Dashware software

  10. I am not convinced. I used the waterproof housing and there was still loads of wind noise. I ended up caking the iside of the housing with headphone foam and only then did you get a reasonable (not good but bearable) result.

These look at lot better with external mic and all. Do they sync via bluetooth so you can see the view of the camera without ripping out SD Cards?

The bluetooth thing is something they are working on, but we won't see anything for a while.

  11. We've got our stock arriving today. $399 inc free Express delivery
