  1. Thanks for the help. After weighing up the options I've decided I'm a data-junkie so will go with the performance-box for Google-Earth-Import action. Can't see it being of any real value but looks cool

As long as the lap times are pretty accurate and are readable on-screen, then the rest (including split times, data logging etc) is a nice-to-have bonus. $AUD is good too ;)

  2. thanks for the help guys.

I jacked it yesterday using the crossmember as the jackpoint and stands under the camber bushes. not sure they are mean to take any load (ie I'm pretty sure they're not!) but unless the jack fails there is minimal load on them anyway.

    happy car:

    cheers!

  3. Hi again,

I know this is a bit of a amateur-hour question, but can someone give me guidance on where to put the jack-stands when lifting the front of the car, assuming the jack will be lifting from the cross member?

On the S15 I could jack and stand from the sills without any problem, but either the GTR is just plain heavier or the sills are softer - every time I touch them with a jack they sound like they are made of brie cheese.

    Cheers,

    Andrew

  4. Hi,

Can anyone recommend a workshop that will happily machine a set of two-piece slotted rotors? I have heard before that some places don't have the right tools to deal with slotted rotors. Will the fact that they are two-piece be a problem for anyone?

Ideally they would be close the CBD (eg wheelworx?) or inner north.

    Cheers

  5. the instructors generally don't go flat out in your car, but they can push it a bit harder if you want them to... :P

First time I did one Dean opened up the S15 and gave it 110%. Showed me what it was capable of in competent hands! Still miss it :D

Luke or i will send you the enrolment form (in pdf format) later today - you'll need to complete it asap and fax/mail it directly to John Bowe Driving with your payment details.

    Cheers - Kim

Hi Kim, after a bit of back-and-forward (was originally going to do the monday session with a mate but he has pulled out) I'm in for the wednesday.

can you please send me a copy of the PDF form and I'll fill-in and send off to JB asap.

    Cheers,

    Andrew

  6. yeah I tried HarrysLapTimer app for the first time the other weekend just with the built-in GPS. Hopeless.

so it works well for you with the TomTom cradle? If so, I'll have to get one. Even paying $159 for the TomTom cradle still makes it a cheap lap timer.

if it works well it would be pretty cool - the current version introduced video recording and apparently the "next" version will have overlay:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FYL4PZsVLC8...layer_embedded#!

pretty neato if the actual GPS function works...

Still don't know - I like all the extra data logging and mapping stuff that comes with the performancebox over the mychron, although it's all totally unnecessary so is knowing the lap time, so might as well!

Will do some more research on the HarrysLapTimer option with a GPS cradle...

  7. Ive been using performance box and has been great so far. Havent even started to undersand all the data logging yet but ill get there.

I will be interested to see what times it spits out compared to the lap time at GSR/EVO time attack this monday.

    Ill keep ya posted

cool thanks. I understand the GSR/EVO track timing is done using the mychrons - the one i used was one SAU borrowed from them for the trackday back in April.

  8. Hi,

I am looking at getting a lap timer for the GTR for trackdays, sprints etc - I get sick of waiting for the official times to be posted, often hours/days after the actual lap, and so its difficult to feedback into improving times. I'm not a pro racer or anything but have recently become OCD about shaving those hundredths off my PB

I've had a look at the Performance Box and used a borrowed mychron at a recent trackday which are GPS and beacon respectively. I've also tried the "Trackday" iPhone app which on my old 3G was absolutely useless.

I'm leaning towards the mychron, but was wondering what experiences you guys have had with these or any other lap timing devices in the same price range (eg $500-900?). Are they usefully accurate? Are beacon timers more accurate than GPS-based ones? What would you recommend if price is no object? or what's best bang for buck?

(ps yes have used search and found references to the above but nothing definitive)

    Cheers

  9. The car is about 1260KG with a driver and "Some" fuel (I can not recall how much we had in it at the time, probably 20L or so)

    yeah that's a fair bit lighter than the full trim 32gtr - 1460 + 90 kilos of meat behind the wheel + 40kg of fuel = 1590kg.

I have had the Toyos go off but that was at a Winton Sprint on a 35 degree day doing 15 minute runs, they started to get a bit sloppy after about 10/12 mins at sprint pace.

my typical session would be 1 out + 5 flying laps @ ~1:22 = 6m50 at full sprint pace, A048s hold their own over that distance, Toyos might not like the extra 330kgs  still, when the a048s run out i'll be looking around for something else so might see if the harder 888 compound suits.

  10. Another tyre to have a look at would be the Toyo R888. That is what we have settled on for my coupe.

The Dunlop 01G was another we tried, I am sure they are a little faster overall than the Toyo, but it is more expensive, took longer to warm up and work, had less feel and was just not as nice in the rain as the Toyo. All things that worked against it for Hillclimbs on a typically damp and cold track! Even at Phillip Island the confidence you could have to just stick it in there on out laps at the 6 hour regularity was just not there compared to the Toyo. The Toyo started to feel good about halfway into the first corner.

Yeah what i have heard about the toyos is that they are softer, so good for light cars, out laps or short motorkhanas and hill climbs, but go off quickly after multiple laps in a heavy car (eg a GTR ). Ive got no direct experience in that though so could be totally wrong.

As a matter of interest how much does your car weigh?

  11. how do you rate the A048's andrew???

pretty good but they're the only semis I've had on the GTR. I had RE55s on the S15 which I felt were much grippier, but the S15 is 200kg lighter and RWD so difficult to compare directly. If I had a choice I'd go RE55s next, but need to get a spare set of rims first as the RE55s aren't DOT approved. A048s are $100/corner cheaper though.

How are you getting ECU speed read outs? PFC?

I'm running a nistune and have the ecutalk LCD running off the consult port. For anyone running a nissan ecu I reckon it is a great little unit - max-value storage and over-limit alarming for most parameters like injector %, water temp, rpm, AFM Voltage etc. The guy who makes them is working on in-built data logging to the microSD card, currently you need to plug a laptop into the USB port for logging. For the price I think they are excellent trackday diagnostic tool, but there's a few things it doesn't have that would be good - boost, oil temp & oil pressure (not available from the Nissan ECU) and intake air temp (in the ECU for GTR but not used by ecutalk)

Max vals from one of the Skynats sessions:

    post-63364-1285760003_thumb.jpg

Just as a point of interest. Our ECU logging at the Apex point of the Kink - not 100m before it - not 100m after it - will normally indicate around 228 - 232kmh.

Well that makes more sense! and man that is fast! Maybe rolling diameter might be some of the difference between GPS and ECU indicated speeds?

thanks for the comps guys :) I must say after switching from the S15 I am loving my GTR too! ;)

  12. just to add my 2c to the speedo, my ecu reports 194-198km/h top speed on the kink, depending on how well I exit the southern hairpin and how late I brake.

Haven't yet cracked the 200, interesting that the R35 hits about the same, but given I'm doing 1:21's not 1:12's I'm guessing the R35 kisses 200 before the kink rather than at terminal velocity into the northern hairpin?

For sake of comparing apples and oranges, the car is a BNR32 with 285kw on A048 semis.

  13. ROH Adrenalin 17" wheels - $250

Set of 4 17"x7" ROH Adrenalin wheels to suit S15 (no tyres). 2 are in good condition with a few minor nicks. The other two have enough gutter-rash to make your blind granny blush, but she will look fully sick chucking burnouts with these rims

    S15 Factory 16" Alloys - $150

Set of 4 16"x6.5" S15 factory alloy wheels with no tyres. They are in reasonable nick but aren't mint - a few scrapes and scratches on one as you can see in the pics. Also note they are the real-man's original alloy, not the later playboy-bling chromed GT-spec items.

These are still for sale... so PRICE DROP!

  14. +1 thanks to all those involved in organising the day. Great to see such a variety of degrees of hardcore, from bunky daily to insane supercars.

And for me nothing broken + no trips into the kitty litter = WIN! Looking forward to the times, the ones that were put up on the board on the day had me cracking 3 seconds better than my PB! - I'll take it but I'm a bit suspicious :D

  15. Re the pfc and hand controller, If you use the nistune you can plug in one of these http://www.ecutalk.com/consultlcd.aspx - monitors your injectors, temps, afms voltage, timing, rpm etc. Stores peak values and has configurable alarms for maxing out your afms, injectors, water temp etc.

Not all the functionality of the PFC hand controller but most of what most people need. Also it's got a USB socket so you can plug in a laptop and log all sensors to csv with the free ecutalk software.

I've got one in my bnr32 and it is a great companion for hard track days.

  16. semislick what brakes are you running, they look brilliant.

They are a project mu billet racing kit - 4pot on 345mm 2piece rotors ( just fit under my 17s). good on track but noisy on the street.

Still running stocks on the rear.

In retrospect they are total performance overkill and an r34/33 brembo set would've been adequate. But for looks yeah I reckon they are tough. Also 10/10 aussieness with green calipers + gold rims ;)
