  1. Congrats, I thought I was buying a PM35 when I first picked up my car but was surprised to see the little "FOUR" badge on the back as well. I was a little undecided whether I liked having the 4WD or not, until I had to make a full-blooded right-turn entry into heavy traffic and there wasn't a single chirp from any tyres.

Jealous of your sunroof though, I have none. :(

  2. This is a big part of the reason I bought a Stagea in the first place. I have a few rental properties to work on out of town and I figured if the house was tenanted and I needed to work on it I could just sleep in the back.

...but I won't attend due to several thousand km of sea water between us. Soz.

  3. Truck with a big hose that can have extensions fitted. From memory, mixer dumps into the pumper, which sends it down the hose into wherever it's going. Only downside is if you have a blow-out it can take a while for the concrete to stop coming through the hose if it's a fair distance.

  4. Yep, get the pump truck in. We built a new room (33sq.m) on the back of a house with very tight access and no drive-on a few years ago, and the pump meant the job to fill the blocks was over and done with in very short order. Can't remember the prices sorry but pretty sure it was only a few hundred. The concreter organised it himself.

  5. My wife hates the reverse beeping, it's on her list of pet peeves with it, along with the foot brake and it "sounding gay". She wants me to fix all these things somehow.

So I told her to only drive the Commodore. Problem solved.

  6. Some people's immediate reaction will be "wow, I better make sure I get genuine Rotas, not fakes" so they'll look very carefully at any wheels carrying the name. People will start advertising "genuine Rotas, not cheap fakes" and prices may even start to rise a little. Rotas become valued for not being fakes and Rota raise the new price to capitalise on the brand value even though they don't cost them any extra to produce.

    Well played Rota, well played...

  7. BMW owners seem to be wary of Varrstoens, can't comment on the quality myself though. I suspect that like any other "replica" wheel people will have had good and bad experiences. Yer pays yer money and takes yer chances.

  8. [minor threadjack]

front wise, anything from 350z/V35 to the end of the Y pipe, rear of that, anything from a V35/G35 sedan

Does this hold true for PNM35s as well or does the AWD get in the way? I've been trying to find something for mine and while I've found the Zee's ones on YAJ they'd cost over $2K landed here in NZ and I'm pretty sure I could get a reasonable custom one built for that price.

  9. Man that sucks, good to hear you came out of it ok. Coming from a Commodore I'm not too flash on fancy stuff like suspension that isn't derived from a sprung cart, but maybe check the shock body too for scarring.

I haven't had a wheel come completely off but I've had one come loose at the drags once, making the steering wheel wobble madly from side to side. Not a pleasant sensation at nearly 160km/h but it was my own stupid fault for not double-checking my nuts (oo-er...) after swapping wheels.

  10. Greetings all. I have an '04 PNM35 and I have a creaking/cracking noise from both sides at the front. At first I thought it might be bushes on the way out but a few robust runs over speed bumps has shown it only happens when on the brakes, and sometimes just after getting off them. I can't replicate the sound when I'm not braking. Turning without braking doesn't bring the sound about either, all the way up to near-heli speeds/steering angles.

Could it be up with the brakes or is it more likely the bushes needing to be loaded up a certain way before the noise makes itself known? I see UCA bushes have been mentioned by others (w00t I used search! Although possibly badly) but it seems strange that it's only when brakes are involved.

Also seems strange that it's come about after only 68,000kms but she's a hefty whale so meh.

  11. Yeah I'm not concerned about the noise and flat battery. Must remember to use emoticons...

As for the pop-up screen, there's a whirring noise from somewhere in/behind the centre console when I first turn the starter knob, is this the screen trying to come up? What's the best way to help it up? Or is it a case of "jam something down the sides and hope you don't break it"?

  12. Thanks again for the welcome. Only real issues I've found so far are:

    - A random noise that sounds like a loose bolt or something flapping. I think it's just the front number plate but my wife has run off with the car so I haven't had a chance to tighten it up yet.

    - The battery will go flat if the headlights are left on when the car is parked up overnight. I have sworn to protect the identity of the person who found this out for fear she will withdraw marital congress.

    - I've failed the "make the pop-up screen pop up" intelligence test. Surely I just push the button on the top, right? Or is there some other trick to it, like holding the button down for 5 seconds?

  13. 34GeeTeeTee: Cheers, only downside so far seems to be getting hold of a repair manual. The great advantage of the Commodore is that every bogan and his dog has one so everything's easy to get hold of.

PN-Mad: Hi, I was hoping you'd pop by, I've been having a look through your build thread, looks great.

  14. They* say the first time is always the most intimidating. All that pent-up enthusiasm and antici...pation, not to mention the sheer lust for gratification. What if you're too quick off the mark? What if you do it wrong? What if you're just not good enough?

But here I am. My first post on a new forum.

Name: Hertz Donut, better known as "Matty" on various NZ forums or "Wibble" on Street Commodores but those were both taken. Who woulda thunk it.

Age: Oh shut up. I'm still under 40.

Location: New Zealand, where all the cutest sheep are.

Vehicle: 2004 PNM35 Stagea 350RX FOUR. Did I say that right?

Mechanical Level: Enthusiastic but clueless DIY monkey.

Online afflictions: Textual diarrhoea. Not as sexy or messy as it sounds.

Picked it up on Saturday after my faithful VS Commodore I've owned for nearly 14 years decided it didn't love me any more and refused to start, I suspect it drowned in a downpour we had last Tuesday. It was nothing to do with me being its mechanic, nor the 12 years of non-maintenance it received.

Anyway, now that's been pushed into one corner of the car port to dry out, we (being the 'Minister of Warfare, Intelligence, Food and Entertainment' and I) decided we needed something a bit more reliable and safe as a family hauler, and we needed it at 1:30pm last Tuesday. After a frantic online search we came across the Stagea fresh off the boat from Japan and only 300km away.

So far we love it, it's got rather more poke than I would have expected given its vital stats, and it handles surprisingly well for something rolling about on tractor tyres. It's in immaculate condition and has just ticked over 68,000km on the journey home from the dealer. Whoever owned it in Japan kept it very clean, it even still has the factory protectant film over the sill plate in the left rear door. There's very few wear marks inside or out. The intake on it has "power duct" embossed on it but I don't know if this is an aftermarket part or just a hangover from the good old days when Japanese manufacturers liked to list everything on the car.

No huge plans for it, however my wife would like to do the same basic mods as we did to the Commodore many years ago, namely wheels, suspension, headers and exhaust. Bless her.

I would post pics but the car has already been consigned to the school run this morning. Just picture a stock silver PNM35 with epic beige/tan/oatmeal interior.

Stay tuned for rookie mechanical questions like "what's this thing?" and "what's this noise?" and "160Nm should be enough torque to do up the alternator mounting bolts right?" and "how do I get this snapped bolt out?" and so on.

And now you know what "textual diarrhoea" is too.

    Cheers,

    Matty.

*Who are "they" anyway? "They" always seem to have a lot to say about everything. Probably radio talkback callers.
