  1. On the lift side of things the HKS cams for the RB25det do go as high as 9mm of lift @ 264deg duration, at least on the exhaust side. I put one of these in the old R33 gtst.

Right you are too. Maybe the best combo for a non-vct rb30det is to mix and match - Apexi 260 8.9mm intake with HKS 264 9.0mm exhaust.

Any comments on 250 vs 260 degree duration intake cam on an engine that revs to ~7000rpm?

  2. what sort of cams would be good on an RB30DET using an RB25DET head with NO!! VCT.. its been welded up.

I've been looking at cams for a similar application. You're right in that we're limited for lift since they're for hydraulic lifters. I think we're down to HKS 256/256 or 256/264 at 8.8mm lift, or Apexi 250/250 or 250/260 or 260/260 at 8.9mm lift. I'm leaning towards Apexi 8.9mm of some duration for similar reasons as vspec - the lift. We won't need as high duration cams as vspec because we won't be reving anywhere near 8.5k. :D

  3. Finally, an opportunity for another update. In this one I show off how to fist a q45 throttle body and how cool engines can look sitting on an engine stand.

(Note, 80mm q45 is still nowhere as big as vspec's gi-normous 100mm'er! But the q45 does fit the greddy plenum like a glove).

  4. I dont follow that? If we were talking NA then i may agree, but i thought it all goes out the window when you introduce forced induction.

Sorry, 'lower boost' is a bit misleading. I should have said 'lower pressure difference'. The flow bench measures by creating a vacum, so I don't really have any idea how it will perform under boost but we do have a good idea. My head porter follows the theory of making it flow as well as you can NA, then throw boost at it. You don't *need* to do anything special when boost is involved, but the extra effeciency makes the difference. It's sound in principle . Do you think the F1 teams didn't do the same thing back in the 80's?

  5. Had my valve springs measured and compared against rb26 springs when my head was being ported - there was 1/10th of f*ck all between them. If you'd said hydraulic vs solid lifters I might have said "maybe", but just look at the kind of revs steve can run RB25's to without needing to chage stuff like that.

RB26 heads do have different flow characteristics, they are built for a high rev engine and outperform RB25 heads at very high revs. This didn't suit my build requirments (7000rpm rev limit) so I don't really consider it much of an advantage. At lower boost, my RB25 head is actually more effecient than a ported RB26 and will be better on the road for it.

  6. hey,

Im about to undertake major mods after my exams finish, and i was just wondering how hard would it be to fit a stock gtr ecu to a gts-t. The car will be running a rb26head, twin turbo etc etc but still the stock rb25 block.

My first question would be - why? Apart from the obvious horn pleasure in saying you have a (fully sik) twin turbo, what is it that you want here? Certain model RB25 head's are known to flow *very* well. The benefits a RB26 head bring are negliglble compared to the dollar outlay.

I dont really want to go aftermarket as that brakes the budget (also i read somewhere that the gtr plenum uses map senors so i would have to use something like a wolf3d which is alittle bit $$$$) so i through maybe stock gts-t or possible gtr ecu.

Your second problem is the need to do these things on the cheap. Change the head (and compression ratio a side effect) and hope to not to change the ecu? Good luck.

My advice? Enjoy the car as is. Do basic exhaust/intake and suspension mods untill you finish high school and get a decent income. Then go all out on what you want without burdening your parents on frivolous bullshit you can't afford.

I was like you once Mike, just pull your head out of the clouds :)

  7. Even though the main arena was way to hard for me, I had frickin good time. Haven't heard any of these dj's before but j00f is the man, all I remember about his set is it felt right. My first ever event and I'm hooked. Looking forward to Sci Fi in November. MoS sounds like its going to be even harder than GK - is it?

rus, liz, dan was good to see you guys, and to meet you for the first time mel. Thought I ran into you guys in metros at some point but the crowd was flowing too fast to stop and talk. Where were you at adrian? Didn't see you anywhere.

  8. JXL, the $9k R33 clearly has an accident history and visible blemishes, which you can see if you sign up and click the car for extra info. As 13_devil said, the stock page shows cars they *can* import and comply, not cars that are in the country.

Theres no point complaining about used cars getting cheaper. Its a fact of life :P

  9. Imports101 do the compliancing when the car arrives. Its a one stop service. They have a lot of experience in that area, being around since before RAWS came in and are now Quality Assured. Danny also runs a business that modify's cars, thats how I first met him.

  10. IM still abit confused about the 3rd time, i dont see how the government/police can just take away a car that you pay for , for some reason it doesnt seam legal to me, also wat happens if you are not the owner of the car you just happen to be hooning in it, can they still do the following things to the car?

    And what does "hooning" mean?

I guess those are the 3 questions i would really like answers

What if it’s not my vehicle?

The owner of the vehicle will be notified by Police.

The driver is responsible for the towage, storage and other relevant costs incurred in impounding the vehicle if found convicted of the offence.

If the car has not been collected by the time the impoundment period expires (48 hours), the owner is responsible for post-impoundment fees.

    --

    --

Can it get worse than 48 hours impoundment?

    Yes.

If you are convicted of a second impounding offence within three years of the first, the court may impound the vehicle for up to 3 months.

    ...

If you’ve been convicted of two or more impounding offences within the last five years, a court may order that the vehicle is confiscated. A confiscated vehicle becomes the property of the state. You may also have your driver’s license cancelled.

This does not apply if the vehicle has been stolen or hired.

If the court is satisfied that the vehicle was lent at the time of the offence, the court instead of confiscating the vehicle, may order it impounded for up to six months.

    --

    --

Do I get a warning that the vehicle may be confiscated or impounded for longer, depending on the court’s decision?

    Yes.

14 days prior to the court hearing, the Police Commissioner is required to provide written notice of the police intention to seek impoundment or confiscation of the vehicle. This notice goes to:

    The driver of the vehicle

    The vehicle’s license holder

    The Director General (DPI)

Any other person whom the Commissioner is aware of who has or may have interest in the vehicle

The public generally, in a newspaper having state-wide circulation

    --

Basically. they don't give a f&ck who owns the vehicle. Best case for the 3rd offense is your friend lent you the car to you and they impound it for 6mths. If it's in your parents name, it gets confiscated unless you can prove they lent it to you. ie, it's the family car and not your own runabout. I can see this one getting contested at the courts a lot.
